The Silvanidae of Israel (Coleoptera: Cucujoidea)

The Silvanidae is a family comprising mainly small, subcortical, saproxylic, beetles with the more or less dorsoventrally flattened body. It is a family of high economic importance, as some of the species are pests of stored goods; some of them are distributed throughout the world, mainly by human activities. Nineteen species of Silvanidae in ten genera are hereby recorded from Israel. Eleven of those are considered alien, of which four are established either in nature or indoor; eight species are either indigenous or have been introduced in the very remote past. Seven species, Psammoecus bipunctatus, P. triguttatus, Parasilvanus fairemairei, Silvanus castaneus, S. inarmatus, S. ?mediocris and Uleiota planatus, are recorded from Israel for the first time. Airaphilus syriacus was recorded only once in 1913; its status is doubtful. A. abeillei may occur in Israel, although no material is available. Twelve species are associated with stored products, although only three, Ahasverus advena, Oryzaephilus surinamensis and O. mercator, are of distinct economic importance; the rest are either rare or only occasionally intercepted on imported goods. An identification key for all genera and species is provided.   Cite as: Friedman, A.L.L. 2015. The Silvanidae of Israel (Coleoptera: Cucujoidea). Israel Journal of Entomology 44–45: 75–98. The fauna of the blossom weevils (Curculionidae: Curculioninae: Anthonomini) in Israel is surveyed. Four species of Anthonomus (A. chevrolati connexus, A. curtulus, A. multifasciatus and A. stierlini), as well as Bradybatus fallax and Assuanensius peyerimhoffi are recorded for the first time, in addition to four known previously. Assuanensius discoidalis is removed from the list of the Israeli weevils. For most of the species their host plants are recorded, some of them also for the first time. An identification key and illustrations for all genera and species are provided.   Cite as: Friedman, A.L.L. 2016. Blossom weevils of Israel (Curculionidae: Curculioninae: Anthonomini). Four species of the rare and scarcely known weevil genus Sharpia Tournier (Curculionidae: Curculioninae: Smicronychini) in Israel are recorded; two, S. sabulicola and S. torretassoi, for the first time, in addition to previously recorded S. rubida and S. soluta. The association of S. rubida with Cressa cretica is proved, and the association of S. soluta and S. torretassoi with Convolvulus dorycnium and C. lanatus respectively is recorded for the first time. The status of S. ‘filirostrisʼ is discussed. A key and illustrations for all species are provided.   Cite as: Friedman, A.-L.-L. 2017. A review of the saproxylic weevil subfamily Cossoninae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in Israel

Nine species of the saproxylic cossonine weevils are recorded from Israel. A key to genera and species, as well as distributional and biological data are provided. The genera Melicius Alonso-Zarazaga, 2002 and Rhyncolus Germar, 1817 (represented by Melicius gracilis (Rosenhauer, 1856) and R. sculpturatus Waltl, 1839 correspondently) are recorded for the first time in Israel. Pseudomimus avocadi Folwaczny, 1972, described from Israel and previously considered as an endemic Israeli species of Afrotropical origin, is here considered a junior subjective synonym of Caulophilus oryzae (Gyllenhal, 1838), a widespread stored grain pest of Neotropical origin, which develops mainly in the rotten seeds of avocado, but also in wet and damaged stored products. Horia fabriciana Betrem 1929 (Meloidae: Nemognathinae: Horiini), new record for Israel

A large and spectacular Afrotropical blister beetle Horia fabriciana Betrem, 1929, associated with the carpenter bee Xylocopa pubescens Spinola, 1838 (Hymenoptera: Apidae), is recorded here for the first time from Israel. This is the first record of the tribe Horiini and the genus Horia Fabricius, 1787 specifically from Israel, and the northernmost point of the distribution of these taxa. A survey of the weevil tribe Sitonini was conducted in Israel, recording a total of 23 species in four genera. Sitona aliciae Velázquez de Castro n. sp. and S. wahrmani Velázquez de Castro and Friedman n. sp. are described, and five additional Sitona species (S. brucki Allard, S. demoflysi Normand, S. fairmaieri Allard, S. lepidus Gyllenhal, S. puncticollis Stephens, and Schelopius planifrons Fåhraeus) are recorded from Israel for the first time. Genitalia illustrations are given for new and poorly known species (i.e., S. brucki, S. syriacus Stierlin, S. fairmairei, and S. demoflysi). Data on the distribution and host plants of species and keys for their determination are provided. To cite: Velázquez de Castro, A.J., Friedman, A.-L.-L. & Borovec, R. 2010. The first record of the Azolla frond weevil Stenopelmus rufinasus (Curculionidae: Brachycerinae: Tanysphyrini) in Israel

    Get PDF
Collecting of the ground-dwelling weevils in Israel was undertaken by me in 2009–2010 during a survey of Israeli fauna and flora within the framework of the Israel Taxonomy Initiative. During the survey, two females of the semi-aquatic Azolla frond weevil Stenopelmus rufinasus Gyllenhal, 1835 were collected by pitfall trapping. This is the first record of this species in Israel and in the Western Asia. Stenopelmus rufinasus was considered previously a member of Erirhininae, but recently it has been treated as a member of the sister subfamily Brachycerinae in the tribe Tanysphirini, which includes mainly aquatic and semi-aquatic taxa. Stenopelmus rufinasus is a small (1.6–2.0 mm long) stout weevil, with a short reddish rostrum not longer than the pronotum, and geniculate antennae with a 7-segmented flagellum and a distinct club. Its body is covered dorsally by white yellow and brown, and ventrally by white scales. Stenopelmus rufinasus feeds and develops on several species of the fern genus Azolla (Salviniaceae).   Cite as: Friedman, A.-L.-L. 2017. Rosemary beetle Chrysolina americana: A new invasive leaf beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Chrysomelinae) in Israel

    Get PDF
This is the first record of Chrysolina americana from Israel and from the eastern Mediterranean south of Antalya, Turkey (37°N). C. americana (Figs 1, 3, 4) generally resembles the Chrysolina coerulans angelica (Reiche & Saulcy, 1858) (Fig. 2), widely distributed in Israel and feeding and breeding on wild mint (Mentha longifolia (L.) Huds.). C. americana is similar to C. c. angelica particularly in its size, body form and rainbow-like bright glowing coloration of the head, pronotum and elytra, with green, purple and blue longitudinal stripes. However, these species can be easily distinguished by the following characters: elytral punctation is arranged in double rows of punctae in C. americana, while not arranged in any order in C. c. angelica; punctae on the pronotum are concentrated on the sides, leaving the medial area of the pronotum completely smooth in C. americana, while they are spread evenly in C. c. angelica; the longitudinal stripes display two colours—bluish green and purple—in C. americana, and three colours—green, red and blue (mainly medio-laterally)—in C. c. angelica. The two facts—that C. americana was not found in Israel before 2014 and all findings to date have been in Haifa or in close proximity to Haifa—lead to the conclusion that C. americana is not a previously overlooked local species, but, rather, an invasive species, which has passively arrived in Israel in recent years, possibly through the Haifa Port, Israel’s main maritime gateway in the eastern Mediterranean.   Cite as: Friedman, A.L.L. 2016.
