Automated detection and containment of stealth attacks on the operating system kernel
The operating system kernel serves as the root of trust for all applications running on the computer system. A compromised system can be exploited by remote attackers stealthily, such as exfiltration of sensitive information, wasteful usage of the system's resources, or involving the system in malicious activities without the user's knowledge or permission. The lack of appropriate detection tools allows such systems to stealthily lie within the attackers realm for indefinite periods of time. Stealth attacks on the kernel are carried out by malware commonly known as rootkits. The goal of the rootkit is to conceal the presence of the attacker on the victim system. Conventionally, kernel rootkits modified the kernel to achieve stealth, while most functionality was provided by accompanying user space programs. The newer kernel rootkits achieve the malice and stealth solely by modifying kernel data. This dissertation explores the threat posed by both types of kernel rootkits and proposes novel automated techniques for their detection and containment. Our first contribution is an automated containment technique built using the virtualization architecture. This technique counters the ongoing damage done to the system by the conventional kernel rootkits. It is well suited for attacks that employ kernel or user mode stealth but provide most of the malicious functionality as user space programs. Our second contribution is to identify a new class of stealth attacks on the kernel, which do not exhibit explicit hiding behavior but are stealthy by design. They achieve their malicious objectives by solely modifying data within the kernel. These attacks demonstrate that the threat posed to kernel data is systemic requiring comprehensive protection.
Our final contribution is a novel automated technique that can be used for detection of such stealth data-centric attacks. The key idea behind this technique is to automatically identify and extract invariants exhibited by kernel data structures during a training phase. These invariants are used as specifications of data structure integrity and are enforced during runtime. Our technique could successfully detect all rootkits that were publicly available. It could also detect more recent stealth attacks developed by us or proposed by

Fate of novel DNA in transgenic rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
Various aspects concerning the fate of novel DNA in rainbow trout were investigated. These included mosaicism, germ-line transmission, and the methylation status of a mouse metallothionein-1/rat growth hormone gene (mMTrGH) construct, in addition to the fate and temporal expression patterns of injected DNA sequences during development, using a carp β-actin/CAT gene (pFV1) construct. Widespread mosaicism was observed amongst the transgenic fish, resulting in an unequal distribution of transgene copies in the cells/tissues of the fish. Germ line transmission was, however, observed in 50% of the transgenic fish containing the mMTrGH gene construct, with transmission frequencies ranging from 14-81%. The lack of transmission from the rest of the founder transgenics could also be attributed to mosaicism. The methylation studies revealed tissue-specific differences in the methylation patterns of the mMTrGH transgene, but could not be correlated with expression due to the consistent lack of expression of this transgene in our founder transgenics. With respect to the fate of DNA during development, prolonged persistence of injected DNA sequences appeared likely, probably contributing to the mosaicism observed. Studies on the conformational influences of injected DNA revealed that linear molecules were more efficient at forming concatemers and persisting through development. They, therefore, resulted in high levels of expression, and perhaps greater rates of integration. The concatemers generated with circular injected molecules appeared to consist of head to tail arrangements of transgene copies, whereas those generated with linear injected molecules appeared to consist of random arrangements of transgene copies.</p

Arati Shroff ‘98, recipient of the 2019 IMSA Alumni Distinguished Leader Award, is a career U.S. diplomat. She is currently a Una Chapman Cox Fellow and East-West Center Adjunct Fellow analyzing Chinese foreign investment in the United States in emerging high tech sectors. Prior to her current assignment, Arati advanced and implemented U.S. economic policy at the U.S. Consulate in Shanghai, China. Arati previously served in Washington D.C. in the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of South and Central Asia, in the Economic and Consular sections at the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait, and in Taipei, Taiwan. She started her Foreign Service career as an intern at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing during China’s accession to the WTO. Arati also serves as an advocate for international women’s issues and is an advisor to the “Ladies Who Tech” Asia Chapter and Board Member of the International Professional Women’s Society (IPWS) of Shanghai. While at U.S. Consulate Shanghai, Arati lead a team to advance women’s empowerment and gender equality in East China and collaborated with local and international organizations to promote female entrepreneurship. During previous postings, Arati helped propel a multi-stakeholder approach to improve worker safety for Bangladesh’s garment workers, who are predominantly women. Arati is a frequently invited university guest lecturer, panelist, and moderator to exchange insights with diverse audiences on topics ranging from international financial markets to international women’s issues

Knowledge and Attitude of Organ Donation among University Stu dents in Pokhara
Donation of the tissue or organ of human body from a living or dead person to a living recipient
in need of transplantation is organ donation. In the fi eld of modern medicine organ transplantation
is one of the greatest scientifi c advances and remains the most challenging and complex. It saves
thousands of life. The main objective of the study was to explore the knowledge and attitude of
organ donation. A descriptive cross- sectional study using self- administered questionnaire tool
was conducted among 154 Bachelor level students who were selected by using non probability
consecutive sampling technique. The obtained data was entered on SPSS 20 version program and
analyzed and interpreted by using descriptive statistics (Frequency, percentage, mean, median,
and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (chi square).The study found that 57.1 percent
had moderate knowledge on organ donation and more than half (69.5%) had neutral attitude on
organ donation. Knowledge on organ donation was poor. There was signifi cant association (0.014)
between ethnicity and knowledge level. The study concluded that there was moderate level of
knowledge and neutral level of attitude on organ donation among bachelor level students and
there was no signifi cant association of socio-demographic variables and level of knowledge except
ethnicity. It therefore suggests awareness programs on organ donation for college students to
promote and upgrade their knowledge and attitude about organ donation
