    This year’s annual Nulungu lecture at the University of Notre Dame Australia’s Broome Campus will be delivered by Deborah Cheetham, Indigenous Soprano, actor and author of the internationally acclaimed play, White Baptist Abba Fan. She is a graduate of the NSW Conservatorium of Music and Julliard School of Music. Since her international debut in 1997 Ms Cheetham has performed in the theatres and concert halls of United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and throughout Australia. At the Sydney Olympics in 2000, Ms Cheetham performed her original composition, Dali Mana Gamarada. During the 2001 Centenary of Federation celebrations Ms Cheetham performed in several major events including the January 1st Concert in Sydney’s Centennial Park when she appeared as a soloist and speaker. She performed with Argentine tenor, Jose Cura at the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup in 2003. This was broadcast to a worldwide audience of more than one billion. In 2005, Deborah added to her list of international credit engagements in Paris, including performances at the Australian Embassy and the La Cigale in the Marais In 2006 Deborah was a recipient of the Australia Council, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts fellowship. The fellowship enabled Deborah to write, direct and produce a 21st century Australian opera, Pecan Summer. The work created opportunities and demonstrated the talents of Indigenous singers and musicians, actors, writers and technicians. On 22nd February this year Deborah performed the national anthem at the memorial service for the victims of the Black Saturday bushfires. Of the service Deborah said , ‘Joined by a massed choir of over 500 voices I was honoured to pay my respect to the victims and survivors of these terrible fires by singing Advance Australia Fair.’ Deborah will be delivering the Nulungu Lecture at the Broome Campus of The University of Notre Dame, 88 Guy Street, Broome, on Thursday 20 August at 5.00pm. The Nulungu Reconciliation Lecture is to be an annual event on the Broome Campus where key speakers will be invited to address issues of Reconciliation that shape contemporary Aboriginal and Australian thought and experience.     Postural sway in first-degree relatives of individuals with schizophrenia

    Motor abnormalities are well-documented in both schizophrenia spectrum disorders and in individuals at clinical or genetic risk for these disorders (Walther and Mittal, 2017). Like motor control generally, postural control relies on key structures including cerebellum, basal ganglia, and parietal and frontal regions (Surgent et al., 2019). Our group (Apthorp et al., 2019; Kent et al., 2012) and others (Marvel et al., 2004) have found increased postural sway in schizophrenia, as well as in schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) (Apthorp et al., 2019) which is characterized by attenuated features of schizophrenia. Moreover, individuals at ultra-high risk of psychosis have increased postural sway which correlated with both clinical symptoms and cerebellar connectivity (Bernard et al., 2014)

    The spatial tuning of "motion streak" mechanisms revealed by masking and adaptation

    We previously reported that fast-moving dot arrays cause orientation-tuned masking of static gratings (D. Apthorp, J. Cass, &amp; D. Alais, 2010), which we attribute to “motion streaks.” Using similar “streaky” dot motion, we describe spatial frequency tuning of grating threshold elevations caused by masking (Experiment 1) and adaptation (Experiment 2) to motion. To compare the streaks with psychophysical tunings, we Fourier analyzed time-averaged translating dots, which were bandpass (peaking at ~2.3 c/deg). Masking, however, was strongest at lower test frequencies (≤1 c/deg) and largely isotropic over orientation, although a small orientation-tuned effect occurred at ~1.2 c/deg. Results were broadly similar across monoptic and dichoptic conditions. Adaptation to fast motion produced spatially bandpass threshold elevations for parallel test gratings, peaking slightly lower than the peak Fourier frequency, with little elevation below 1 c/deg (unlike the low-pass elevation resulting from masking). Slow adaptation produced little elevation for parallel gratings. For orthogonal test gratings, fast motion adaptation produced low-pass threshold elevations and slow motion produced bandpass elevations, suggesting that separable mechanisms process fast (streaky) and slow motion. The different threshold elevation patterns over spatial frequency for masking and adaptation suggest that the adaptation effects are mainly within-channel suppression, whereas the masking effects may be mainly due to between-channel suppression
