The Level of Accuracy in the Sixth Season of the Medical Television Show, House M.D.
Class of 2014 AbstractSpecific Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of accuracy of medical information presented in the sixth season of the popular prime time medical drama, House M.D. Methods: The study was a descriptive, retrospective assessment of twelve episodes in the sixth season of the medical television show, House M.D. Three parameters were compared to reliable medical sources: signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and medical treatment for the one primary medical problem portrayed in each episode. Three researchers reviewed each episode independently and rated the accuracy of each parameter. The accuracy of each dependent variable was rated on a scale of one to four (most to least accurate, respectively). After discussion, a consensus rating was determined for all three variables for all twelve episodes. Main Results: The average accuracy scores for the signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and medical treatments were 2.08, 2.58 (ie.,least accurate), and 1.5 (ie., most accurate), respectively. The average accuracy score across the three parameters was 2.06 (correct but somewhat unusual). The one-way ANOVA analysis on the variables revealed a statistically significant difference among the groups, with a p value of 0.003. The Tukey HSD test confirmed the statistically significant difference between diagnostic procedures and treatment (p = 0.002). Conclusion: The treatments portrayed in twelve episodes of season six were judged more accurate than signs and symptoms and diagnostic procedures. A rating of three described a correct but extremely unusual representation. A rating of four described an incorrect representation. Each researcher independently rated the episodes, and then a collaborative rating was agreed upon by both researchers. Main Results: Results of the ANOVA test demonstrated a statistically significant difference between the three dependent variables (p=0.002). The Tukey HSD post-hoc test confirmed a significant difference between the accuracy of treatment when compared with signs and symptoms (p=0.012), and with diagnostic procedures (p=0.002). The average rating for the treatment variable was 1.58 (0.9), whereas the average ratings for the signs and symptoms and diagnosis variables were 2.75 ( 0.754), and 3 (1.128), respectively. Accuracy of House, MD Season Five Episodes 1-12
Class of 2012 AbstractSpecific Aims: This study was performed to assess the accuracy of the presenting signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and treatments depicted in episodes one through twelve of the fifth season of House, MD. Methods: This study was a descriptive, retrospective evaluation of the accuracy of the first twelve episodes of the fifth season of House, MD. Dependent variables in this study were presenting signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and treatment of the final diagnosis for the primary patient case. A rating of one to four was assigned to each variable, with one being most accurate and four being inaccurate. Statistical analysis consisted of ANOVA and Tukey HSD post-hoc test Main Results: The signs and symptoms had a mean of 2.42 ± 0.669 (95% CI 1.99 to 2.84). The diagnostic tests had a mean of 2.42 ± 1.084 (95% CI 1.73 to 3.11). The treatment had a mean of 1.42 ± 0.9 (95% CI 0.84 to 1.99). ANOVA showed a statistically significant difference among the accuracy ratings of the groups (p = 0.013). Tukey HSD did not show a significant difference between the accuracy of the signs and symptoms and diagnostic tests (p = 1). The test did reveal a statistically significant difference between accuracy of treatment and both the signs and symptoms (p = 0.027) and diagnostic tests (p = 0.027). Class of 2014 AbstractSpecific Aims: To assess the accuracy of the presentation (signs and symptoms), the diagnostic procedures used to arrive at the final diagnosis, and the ultimate treatment performed in each of the last ten episodes of the first season of the television medical drama, House MD. Methods: A descriptive retrospective analysis of the accuracies and inaccuracies of episodes 13 to 22 in season one of the television series House, MD. The accuracy of each episode in regards to the presenting signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and treatment was rated on a scale of one to four: 1) Correct and usual representation; 2) Correct but somewhat unusual representation; 3) Correct but extremely unusual representation; 4) Incorrect representation. Both researchers evaluated each episode on the above criteria independently, and a cooperative and final rating was chosen upon. Main Results: Results of the ANOVA test did not demonstrate a statistically significant difference between the three variables (p=0.581). A Tukey HSD post-hoc test was unable to confirm if there was a significant difference between the the three variables. The average rating for the presenting signs and symptoms was 2.50 (±0.707), and 2.30 (±1.160) and 2.10 (±0.568) for diagnostic procedures and treatment, respectively. Design and Evaluation of a Dosing Schedule Pictogram for an Elderly Population
Class of 2011 AbstractOBJECTIVES: To design and evaluate a dosing schedule pictogram in an elderly population. To identify possible reasons for misunderstanding of a dosing schedule pictogram and, if appropriate, redesign the pictogram to reflect reasons for misunderstanding. METHODS: Through a modified focus group analysis involving residents of a retirement community in Tucson, Arizona, the understandability of a morning-noon-night color pictogram was assessed. Residents’ interpretation of the pictogram as correct or incorrect was assessed using a decision-tree analysis. The percentage of correct responses was calculated and compared to established pictogram criteria for acceptability. Lastly, potential reasons for misunderstanding were assessed. RESULTS: Thirteen residents, six males and seven females, participated in the study. The rate of correct interpretation was 84.6%, which nearly satisfies the ANSI criterion of 85% correct and far exceeds the ISO criterion of 67% correct. Two participants incorrectly interpreted the pictogram, but their comments, however, indicated good comprehension of time of day. CONCLUSION: The dosing schedule pictogram was correctly interpreted by a majority of study participants satisfying industry standards. The Impact of Community and Hospital Pharmacists on Adult Immunization Rates: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Class of 2015 AbstractObjectives: To establish the impact pharmacists can have on adult immunization rates by having pharmacists available to provide, administer, and advocate for immunizations. Methods: The following databases were searched from inception to November 2014: NLM PubMed; Ovid/MEDLINE; and Google Scholar. Inclusion criteria were comparative studies reporting pharmacist intervention and their impact on immunization rates. Of 38 publications originally identified, 15 met inclusion criteria. Variables examined included study characteristics, pharmacist intervention, and immunization rates. Results: Of the 15 studies we identified, only ten studies could be analyzed in the meta-analysis. All studies showed increases in immunization rates with pharmacist involvement, but there was high variance. Pharmacist interventions at hospital sites had the greatest benefit for increasing immunization rates (average odds ratio [OR], 10.64, confidence interval [CI] 95%, 5.25-21.49). Pharmacist intervention at one or two community sites had the second highest impact (OR, 2.81; CI 95%, 2.31-3.41). Studies covering multiple sites (more than two) showed the lowest increase in immunization rates (OR 2.26; CI 95%, 1.81-2.81). Conclusions: Pharmacist’s involvement in advocating and administering immunizations directly increases immunization rates in some patient populations. Class of 2011 AbstractOBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the level of accuracy in terms of medical information presented in the popular television show, House, MD. This is part of a larger ongoing study, and evaluates only the first 11 episodes of season four. METHODS: This study was a descriptive, retrospective assessment of the first 11 episodes in the fourth season of the medical television drama, House, MD. The signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and medical treatment for one major disease portrayed in each episode were recorded and compared to authoritative medical sources. Based on the medical resource material used, an accuracy score for each of the three above-mentioned variables in each episode was assigned. Three researchers evaluated these ratings individually. A collaborative rating was determined for all three variables for all eleven episodes. RESULTS: The average accuracy scores for presenting signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and medical treatments were 2.36, 1.82, and 1.91, respectively. The average accuracy score across the three variables resulted in a rating of 2.03. Episode one was excluded from the final analysis. The one-way ANOVA, Tukey’s HSD test and the Kruskal Wallis test all found no significant difference among the data. Therefore, the null hypothesis was not excluded in this analysis. CONCLUSION: The presenting symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and medical treatments shown in the eleven episodes evaluated were not significantly different in terms of level of accuracy. Medication Identification Rates by Pharmacists and Nurses
Class of 2014 AbstractSpecific Aims: To assess and compare prescribing error-identification rates by healthcare professionals Methods: Pharmacists and nurses from Northwest Medical Center were invited to participate in this study. Participants completed a questionnaire that consisted of 10 fictitious patient prescriptions. They were asked to evaluate the accuracy of the prescriptions and indicated the type of error found, if any. The number of correctly identified prescribing errors, correct types of errors, and error identification rates for each group were calculated. Rasch analysis was used to assess the validity and reliability of the questionnaire. Wilcoxon and Rasch-Welch t-test were used to assess the difference in prescribing error-identification rates. Main Results: Thirty-five out of 700 nurses and 6 out of 20 pharmacists completed the questionnaire (response rate 5% and 30% respectively). Pharmacists had significantly higher error-identification rates compared to nurses (p = 0.0001). Additionally, pharmacists were able to correctly identify the type of error in each prescription (p < 0.0001). Conclusion: Pharmacists were significantly able to correctly identify more prescribing errors and more types of prescribing errors in 10 fictitious prescriptions compared to nurses. Accuracy of Medical Information in the Seventh Season of the Medical Television show House, M.D
Class of 2016 AbstractObjectives: To evaluate the level of accuracy of medical information presented in the seventh season of the medical drama, House M.D. To assess the accuracy of the presentation, diagnostic procedures and treatment presented in season seven. Methods: A descriptive, retrospective assessment of the accuracy of all the episodes of the seventh season of House M.D. Three reviewers independently rated the accuracy (on a scale of one to four) for the presenting signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and treatment in each episode. A rating of one meant a correct and usual representation while a rating of two indicated a correct but somewhat unusual representation. A three was given for a correct but extremely unusual representation and a rating of four indicated an incorrect representation. Each researcher independently rated the episodes, and an average for each rating was used for analysis. Results: Results of the ANOVA test demonstrated no statistically significance differences between the three dependent variables (p=0.0782), therefore the Tukey HSD post-hoc test was unnecessary. The average rating for the treatment variable was 2.17 (±1.19), whereas the average ratings for the signs and symptoms and diagnosis variables were 2.74 (±0.92), and 2.87 (±1.14), respectively. The ratings for the treatment variable were more accurate compared to the other two variables.
