    Masked cognate translation priming with Arabic-English bilinguals: Further support for the morphological account

    The aim of this study is to test the two accounts that have been posited as how cognates are represented in the bilingual mind: the mophological account and the phonological account. More specifically, this study exploits the uique feature of pluralization in Arabic (i.e., concatenative vs. non-concatenative process of pluralization) to invetigate how cognates are represented in the bilingual mind of different-script bilinguals (Arabic-English bilinguals) using the masked priming technique. Two types of cognates were used: cognates that are pluralized concatenatively and cognates that pluralized non-concatenatively in Arabic. In concatenative pluralization, the phonology of the singualr form is intact such as هرمون /hormōn/ (hormone in English), which is pluralized as هرمونات/hormōnat/ (hormones in English). On the other hand, in non-concatenative pluralization, the phonology of the singular form is broken when a word is plualized non-concatenatively as in ترم /tirm/ (term in English) and أترام atrām/ (terms in English). The results show a comparable priming effect for both types of pluralizations indicating that cognates in Arabic-English bilinguals may have a shared morphological representation since the magnitude of priming was not affected by the type of pluralization. This similar priming effect for concatenative and non-concatenative pluralization indicates that cognates may share a special kind of morphological representation as suggested by the morphological account.     Providing pharmacy services during the coronavirus pandemic in Saudi Arabia

    Abstract: On March 2, 2020, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia confirmed its first case of the emerging coronavirus strain that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Shortly thereafter, the number of confirmed cases nationwide began to rise. Since the looming outbreak, all healthcare professionals, including pharmacists, began to work at maximum capacity and effort. The Saudi Society of Clinical Pharmacy (SSCP) recognizes the significant impact pharmacists can have during outbreaks. Based on the scientific evidence available during this outbreak, the SSCP set up an expert working group to conceptualize and draft proposed recommendations that highlight the roles and responsibilities of pharmacists during epidemics and pandemics. The SSCP working group made 28 recommendations. In addition to national and institutional guidelines, these recommendations could serve as guidance for affected entities.     Development of New Vanadium and Iron complexes for potential anticancer drugs, 2016

    In recent years, metals based antitumor complexes have played an important role in chemotherapy. In this study, two new metal complexes - dioxovandium LVO2 and dichloroiron LFeCl2-have been synthesized. The dioxovanadium complex LVO2 is formed from the reaction between the ligand HL and VO(acac)2 in 1:1 molar ratio, while the dichloroiron complex was prepared from the reaction between ligand HL with FeCl2 in 1:2 molar ratio. Both new complexes have been characterized by FT -IR and UV -Vis. The IR spectrum revealed the absorption band changes between the complexes and their ligand, and UV -Vis show d-d transitions for the iron complex and LMCT for the vanadium complex. Molecular structures of the two complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The central metals (both vanadium and iron) have adopted distorted trigonal bipyramidal configurations. The ligand serves as tridentate providing two nitrogen and one oxygen atoms for coordination. The complexes with vanadium and iron central atoms have shown promising results in preclinical testing and have already been evaluated for enhancement of the anti-proliferative activity on PC3.     Detectable sensation of a stochastic smoking model

    This paper is related to the stochastic smoking model for the purpose of creating the effects of smoking that are not observed in deterministic form. First, formulation of the stochastic model is presented. Then the sufficient conditions for extinction and persistence are determined. Furthermore, the threshold of the proposed stochastic model is discussed, when noises are small or large. Finally, the numerical simulations are shown graphically with the software MATLAB

    Abstract: The awareness and understanding of open-source software are very limited. In most cases, it is not even there. This deficiency causes a lot of financial expenses, especially for students who are highly committed to their studies. The education sector itself lacks awareness of open source and most colleges and universities use proprietary software. The general assessment indicates that most people are completely unaware of the benefits of open-source software. The purpose of this research is to survey the education sector and assess their current level of understanding of open-source software. This study will use a quantitative method of research which is the survey questionnaire method, therefore, a formal questionnaire related to open-source software, its understanding, and its use will be developed. These data were analyzed to conclude. This research will help us to determine the current level of awareness of OSS in the education sector and also will serve as an activity to create more awareness. Moreover, it will allow us to devise a strategy to promote open-source software not only in the education sector but also in other sectors in Saudi Arabia.     Exploration of Implementation of Questioning the Author in Teaching Reading Comprehension in EFL Saudi Secondary schools

    The current study aimed to explore implementing Questioning the Author (QtA) strategy in secondary EFL schools in Saudi Arabia and to identify the pedagogical and practical challenges faced by Saudi EFL teachers while applying the QtA in teaching reading comprehension. More specifically, it explored the teachers’ understanding of the concept of reading comprehension in their context and their perspectives on the main challenges facing them in teaching reading comprehension, before implementing the QtA. To achieve these aims, an exploratory study was adopted for data collection and analysis. Four data collection methods were used in this study with six volunteer Saudi EFL secondary teachers respectively, namely, preliminary intervention interviews, post-intervention interviews, classrooms observations and reflective essays. The data from this study were all transcribed and analysed inductively and deductively by using the MAXQDA 2020 software package, capable of handling the large amount of data gathered from the data collection tools. As a result of the analysis process, the findings revealed that Saudi EFL teachers’ understanding of the concept of reading comprehension is formed based on the Ministry of Education (MoE) agenda of teaching and learning reading comprehension in public schools. They also demonstrated flexibility and awareness of their role of EFL teachers in adopting English instruction strategies in their classrooms. Although EFL teachers received face to face training in applying the strategy in their actual classrooms before the COVID-19 pandemic, the key findings highlighted the challenges of the implementation of the QtA in EFL classrooms during the transition to remote learning in Saudi Arabia, due to coronavirus. Despite transferring the education system in Saudi Arabia to remote emergency learning, namely via the new Madrasati platform, and being successful in teaching students with QtA strategy, the findings indicated that the teachers faced several challenges which could affect students' comprehension, including linguistic, cultural and social aspects, as well as resistance to new ways of learning. This study was concluded with several recommendations for policymakers in teaching English, in the context of this study

    This study examined the process of evaluation of the training programs at the Administration of Educational Training and Scholarship in Riyadh by using the Kirkpatrick Model for Improving the Process of Evaluation. This study employed a mixed method, where the researcher designed a questionnaire, interview questions, and document analysis based on the Kirkpatrick Model. The study found that the Administration evaluated the training programs at the “reaction” level to a great extent. In contrast, the study found that the Administration does not evaluate the training programs at “learning,” “behavior,” and “results” levels. Based on findings in this study, it is evident that the Administration of Educational Training and Scholarship in Riyadh did not reach its goal of developing and maintaining the trainees' knowledge, skills, and attitudes. The Administration of Educational Training and Scholarship in Riyadh should consider these findings and create mechanisms that can cause change. Therefore, the researcher recommended several strategies to increase the process of evaluation effectiveness by improving the evaluation practices at the Administration of Educational Training and Scholarship in Riyadh, using Kirkpatrick's Four-Level Training Evaluation Model. The study concluded that the process of evaluation of the training programs at the Administration of Educational Training and Scholarship in Riyadh should be enforced at the “reaction” level and initiated at the levels of “learning,” “behavior,” and “results.

    A Novel TMR Cantilever-Based Bi-Directional Flow Sensor for Agricultural and Domestic Applications

    This article introduces a novel, cost-effective, noninvasive sensing mechanism for measuring water flow rate. It employs two tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) sensors (analog and bi-polar), a magnet, and a stainless-steel cantilever. The TMR sensors are installed outside the insulating water pipe. A magnet is fixed at the free end of the cantilever and integrated into the pipe system. The cantilever’s deflection corresponds to the flow rate, with an analog TMR sensor measuring the bending angle. This bending angle, in either direction of the cantilever’s deflection, is captured through the analog voltage from the TMR sensor. The output from the analog TMR sensor is an analog voltage that directly reflects the strength of the magnetic field. An ESP32 microcontroller records the voltage from the analog TMR sensor, converts it to flow rates, and utilizes the bi-polar TMR sensor to ascertain the flow direction. A prototype sensor was developed and tested in a laboratory-scale setup to validate the effectiveness of the sensing mechanism. This prototype demonstrated a worst-case accuracy of 1.0% across flow rates of 0 to 1.5 m3/h for both the forward and reverse flow directions. The response and recovery times of the sensor are approximately 470 ms and 592 ms for forward and 487 ms and 625 ms for reverse direction flow. Also, hysteresis errors of 1.84% and 2.06% have been calculated for both flow directions. Notably, the sensing element does not contain any rotating components or require electrical connections to the cantilever for measurement. These attributes potentially lead to lower maintenance requirements and a longer lifespan for the sensor
