A cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy study of iron recovered from a laser-heated diamond anvil cell
This paper discusses the use of a focused ion beam for the preparation of cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy specimens from small samples, typically 150 micron in diameter, that have been recovered from a laser-heated diamond anvil cell. We present preliminary observations of iron melted with helium as the pressure-transmitting medium to pressures near 4 GPa. The project is designed to investigate entrapment mechanisms of the inert gases in metals and silicates at high pressure and temperatures
Synthesis of binary transition metal nitrides, carbides and borides from the elements in the laser-heated diamond anvil cell and their structure-property relations
Transition metal nitrides, carbides and borides have a high potential for industrial applications as they not only have a high melting point but are generally harder and less compressible than the pure metals. Here we summarize recent advances in the synthesis of binary transition metal nitrides, carbides and borides focusing on the reaction of the elements at extreme conditions generated within the laser-heated diamond anvil cell. The current knowledge of their structures and high-pressure properties like high-(p; T) stability, compressibility and hardness is described as obtained from experiments
Compact multi-anvil wedge-type high pressure apparatus
Apparatus for generating high pressures by application of force by an anvil against each face of a solid polyhedron is described. The equipment constructed utilizes a tetrahedron of pyrophyllite and four tungsten carbide anvils as described earlier by H. T. Hall. External force is applied to only one of the anvils, and wedge reaction forces act on the other anvils, permitting the equipment to be used in a conventional hydraulic press. Examples of results of use of the equipment are given. Success of the design has been shown by the repeated generation of pressures in excess of 100,000 atmospheres indicating that large existing presses might be used to generate pressures of this order in volumes of several cubic inches. For higher pressures a two-stage multi-anvil apparatus is proposed in which the second-stage anvils are embedded in a large pyrophyllite tetrahedron to obtain necessary supporting forces

Tensorial stress-plastic strain fields in α-ω Zr mixture, transformation kinetics, and friction in diamond anvil cell
Various phenomena (phase transformations, chemical reactions, and friction) under high pressures in diamond anvil cell are strongly affected by fields of all components of stress and plastic strain tensors. However, they could not be measured. Even measured pressure distribution contains significant error. Here, we suggest coupled experimental-analytical-computational approaches utilizing synchrotron X-ray diffraction, to solve an inverse problem and find all these fields and friction rules before, during, and after α-ω phase transformation in strongly plastically predeformed Zr. Due to advanced characterization, the minimum pressure for the strain-induced α-ω phase transformation is changed from 1.36 to 2.7 GPa. It is independent of the compression-shear path. The theoretically predicted plastic strain-controlled kinetic equation is verified and quantified. Obtained results open opportunities for developing quantitative high-pressure/stress science, including mechanochemistry, material synthesis, and tribology. This is a pre-print of the article Levitas, V. Both the Anvil and Palms mines were opened in 1886. The mines were consolidated in 1923 with the Keweenaw lease (North Anvil lease and Massie lease) and eventually worked to a depth of some 2,000 feet. The Mine was operated by Youngstown Mines Corporation for Pickands, Mather and Company from 1931 to its closure in 1957. Pickands, Mather and Company was established in 1883 as an iron mining and shipping firm with interests in the Lake Superior region. It was one of the large mining companies that consolidated smaller properties in the Michigan iron ranges in the early 1900s. The Company became one of the largest iron ore companies in the US
