Assessing the impact of incomplete information on the resilience of financial networks

    No full text
This paper explores the issue of robustness against failure cascades for the network of interbank exposures. The available data were retrieved through the Bank for International Settlements database and report only incomplete information from which networks displaying a core-periphery structure were produced. A model of financial contagion was set up to estimate the width and length of the cascades, and was run on the networks detected from the data, as well as simulated data. The role of incomplete information was taken into account by considering a worst-case scenario in which unobserved links were assumed to be present. Given the core-periphery structure of the network, the worst-case scenario was studied in different sub-cases in which different periphery organisations were considered. Simulations showed that the actual network was far from the worst scenario for the propagation of contagion, meaning that the role of unobserved links can substantially alter the resilience of the whole network.

Scanning Electron Microscopy Evaluation of Root Surfaces After Instrumentation With Two Piezoelectric Devices

Scanning electron microscopy evaluation of root surfaces after ultrasonic instrumentation was performed with 2 different metallic tips on piezoelectric devices. Fresh extracted teeth were collected for experimental observation and randomly divided into 2 groups: Test Group, where the root surfaces were treated using an iron, rough, double nano-structural coated (T-Black), corindone-treated tip, and Control Group where the root surfaces were treated with a conventional iron smooth tip. A scanning electronic microscope analysis was performed and the surface roughness and the amount of residual debris were evaluated. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed. Twenty specimens were analyzed, 10 per group and a total of 21.4 × 10 μm has been observed. On treated area percentage of debris after ultrasonic scaling in Test Group was 1.9 ± 1.8%, while in Control Group it was 5.7 ± 4.3%. Within the limits of the study, it seems that the efficacy of the novel iron, rough, double nano-structural coated (T-Black), corindone-treated structure tip showed greater performance in terms of root surface debridement than the conventional iron smooth tip. The possibility to use a single tool (ultrasonic device with a specific tip) for the root planing procedure within the nonsurgical mechanical therapy may represent a significant advantage for the clinicians. The tested novel tip seems to be able to show the requested ideal characteristics. However, further clinical studies are needed to demonstrate the in vitro results

Leaf removal and cluster thinnings trials in "Aglianico" grapevine.

Research has been carried out in “Aglianico del Vulture” production area in Barile county (Potenza). In 2004 the following treatments have been compared: 1) leaf removal in the basal part of the shoot (from the first node to the one following the last cluster) carried out at veraison time (50 % of coloured berries); 2) cluster thinning: removal of 40% of the clusters at veraison time; 3) leaf removal and cluster thinning as previous described; 4) control (untouched plants). Cluster on the distal portion of the shoot has been usually removed as well as the ones with anomalies, bad shape and delay in development. Moreover, cluster on weak shoots as well as on laterals has been removed. Histoanatomical observations on berries collected from the different treatments at harvest have been carried out, as well as chemical analyses on grapes and wines obtained from separated microvinifications. Moreover, leaf gas exchange have been measured. Treatments slightly affected berry histoanatomical characteristics: from sections has been possible to observe anthocyanins and tannins accumulation in the skin external layers. Gas exchange parameters didn’t show large differences among the four treatments, nevertheless net assimilation rate and leaf water use efficiency increase when cluster thinning and leaf removal plus cluster thinning are applied to the crop. Maturation parameters didn’t show big differences among the various treatments, even if a slight increase in total and extractable anthocyanins has been observed with leaf removal

Un possibile ruolo del RNDT per l’accesso e l’utilizzo dei dati territoriali nella gestione delle emergenze di Gabriele Ciasullo e Antonio Rotundo Fig. 1

A possible role of RNDT to access and use spatial data in emergency management. In the emergency management, an easy discovery of spatial data should be ensured for their effective sharing and integration. The National Catalogue for Spatial Data (Repertorio Nazionale dei Dati Territoriali) can be an answer to those needs if the public administrations provide reliable and updated information and implement appropriate policies on access, sharing and reuse of data
