Sediment Production Model for the South Branch of the Buffalo River Watershed
To predict the relative risk of soil erosion from various parts of the South Branch Buffalo
River watershed, southwest of Moorhead, MN, the surficial geology of the area has been
studied and a methodology has been developed. The methodology comprises the use of
the sediment production component of the United States Department of Agriculture
AnnAGNPS model to quantify surface erosion rates and sediment yields from the upland
areas, and a sediment routing model to estimate the channel bank migration rates and the
supply of sediment from stream bank sources. The AnnAGNPS model was calibrated
using the suspended sediment load observations made at Sabin, Minnesota during 1978.
The calibrated model predicts a sediment yield of 14,400 tons/yr at the watershed outlet
(13.0 tons/km²/yr) for the years 2002-2005. This amount is nine times larger than the
channel bank erosion estimate of 1600 tons/yr (1.45 tons/km²/year). Modifications to the
AnnAGNPS program allow routing multiple grain sizes of sediment produced in the
watershed, including aggregated pellets formed from silts and clays, and predicting the
likely locations of sediment deposition in the river network.Houston Engineering, Inc, Buffalo-Red River Watershed DistrictLauer, Wes; Wong, Miguel; Mohseni, Omid. (2006). Western Faculty Profile: Dr. Susanne Kohalmi
Dr. Susanne Kohalmi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at the Western University in London, Ontario. Her research is in molecular genetics, with focus on the regulation of gene expression and protein interactions. Currently her research is investigating the arogenate dehydratase enzyme family (ADTs) in the plant model organism Arabidopsis thaliana. In addition to research, she teaches undergraduate courses in genetics as well as supervising both undergraduate and graduate students. Anthony Wong, member of the Academic Affairs Committee at WURJHNS, interviewed Dr. Kohalmi to learn more about her research, her path to Western, and her advice to students
A Practical Short-run Approach to Market Equilibrium
The "short-run approach" calculates long-run producer optima and general equilibria bybuilding on short-run solutions to the producer's profit maximization problem and onprofit-based valuation of the fixed inputs. We outline this method and illustrate it on anexample of peak-load pricing.general equilibrium, fixed-input valuation, nondifferentiable joint costs, Wong-Viner Envelope Theorem, peak-load pricing
Wayang wong of the Yogyakarta Palace is a traditional performing arts made by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I to strengthten his position as the true successor of Majapahit. The combination of dance art, music, and theater that tells epic stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata made wayang wong to be labeled as the heirloom of Yogyakarta Palace. The importance of wayang wong presentment in state ritual ceremonies makes it one of the traditional arts that is worth reserving. However, nowadays wayang wong is considered merely a tourist attraction without deeper knowledge of the art itself. This has made regeneration efforts for wayang wong harder to be done. Therefore, it is necessary to design an audio visual media that is interesting, informative, and easy to distribute, such as a documentary video. The designing process uses a qualitative research method with linear strategy, which starts with problem identification, collecting and analyzing the data, as well as testing and implementation. The final result in the form of a documentary video is expected to be able to convey information about wayang wong gaya Yogyakarta so the younger generation can learn more about traditional arts
