Harmonic Disturbance Rejection Control for Magnetic Field Compensation Applications

    Get PDF
A simple control strategy was studied for harmonic disturbance rejection in magnetic field compensation systems for low-field magnetic resonance techniques. The strategy is based on the simultaneous action of a conventional PID and a selective harmonic-compensation controllers. The system consists of a set of compensating coils fed by independent current sources driven by a digital controller. A series of hall magnetic sensors close the control loop. Despite its simplicity, it is shown that the performance of the dual controller improves within the frequency range where the waterbed effect becomes dominant, by selectively enhancing the rejection of the harmonic component. The proposed solution is particularly useful for selective harmonic rejection of slowly varying frequency and amplitude dependent harmonic perturbations. An extension to multiple-harmonic components perturbations is possible.Fil: Forte, Guillermo Omar. Universidad de Cordoba. Fac. de Matemática Astronomía y Física; ArgentinaFil: Anoardo, Esteban. Proton field-cycling nucler magnetic resonance relaxometry in the smectic A mesophase of thermotropic cyanobiphenyls: Effects of sonication

    Get PDF
Field-cycling nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry was used to study the spin-lattice relaxation dispersion of selected standard smectic A liquid crystals at different temperatures. Relaxation features at both, in presence and absence of a monochromatic ultrasonic field were considered. We show that the laboratory-frame spin-lattice relaxation time is mainly governed by traslational diffusion. Order director fluctuations (ODF) are less important while rotational difussion seems to be only relevant near the clearing point. We show that sonication enhances the ODF contribution in the SmAmesophase, thus enabling the evaluation of different features associated with this mechanism.Fil: Bonetto, Fernando Jose. New magnet design for fast-field-cycling nuclear magnetic resonance

    Get PDF
A new magnet design for fast-field-cycling nuclear magnetic resonance is described. A topic of interest is the compensation of the magnetic field homogeneity during the generation of the pulsed magnetic field. In contrast with previous solutions, the magnet system here discussed can be electronically controlled. In Kelvin-type magnets used today, the homogeneity of the field is set-up through a current density distribution along the air-cored cylinders that compose the magnet coil. A common feature of this type of magnets is that the magnetic field value and its homogeneity are affected by thermo-mechanical stress during the strong current pulses applied to the coil. In the new design here presented, the problem can be circumvented through a multicoil arrangement driven by individual current sources, allowing an automatic correction of the magnetic field drift and the homogeneity.Fil: Kruber, Stephan. Proton double irradiation field-cycling nuclear magnetic resonance imaging: Testing new concepts and calibration methods

    No full text
Double resonance experiments in field-cycling nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) are powerful tools for the indirect detection of quadrupolar and electron resonances, dynamic nuclear polarization-induced signal amplification, within other possibilities. In the context of magnetic resonance imaging, double irradiation at high and low magnetic fields in field-cycling experiments can be conveniently used for instrumental calibration purposes and contrast manipulation. The basic goal of this article is to present a practical method for the measurement and calibration of the magnetic field in field-cycling magnetic resonance imaging instruments using proton resonances at high and low fields. We discuss an experimental protocol to adjust the optimal position of the gradient unit respect to the sample and the magnet system, and to measure the effective magnetic field gradient across the sample. A new modality of slice selection by irradiating the sample in the presence of a gradient field at low magnet-field conditions is also discussed. As a practical matter, we show how the sample irradiation at low fields can be used for contrast-enhancement, while handling the NMR signal intensity with spatial selectivity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first calibration and adjustment package for a field-cycled magnetic resonance imaging instrument and the first example of double irradiation direct manipulation of contrasts in a proton image.Fil: Rodriguez, Gonzalo Gabriel. Air core notch-coil magnet with variable geometry for fast-field-cycling NMR

    Get PDF
In this manuscript we present details on the optimization, construction and performance of a wide-bore (71 mm) α-helical-cut notch-coil magnet with variable geometry for fast-field-cycling NMR. In addition to the usual requirements for this kind of magnets (high field-to-power ratio, good magnetic field homogeneity, low inductance and resistance values) a tunable homogeneity and a more uniform heat dissipation along the magnet body are considered. The presented magnet consists of only one machined metallic cylinder combined with two external movable pieces. The optimal configuration is calculated through an evaluation of the magnetic flux density within the entire volume of interest. The magnet has a field-to-current constant of 0.728 mT/A, allowing to switch from zero to 0.125 T in less than 3 ms without energy storage assistance. For a cylindrical sample volume of 35 cm3 the effective magnet homogeneity is lower than 130 ppm.Fil: Kruber, Stephan. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. NMR Relaxometry analysis of lubricant oils degradation

    Get PDF
The present work was undertaken in order to investigate lubricant oil degradation at the molecular level. Ageing effects, as reflected on the proton spin-lattice relaxation rate (T −1 1 ) dispersion, were studied in two different lubricant engine oils. The proton field cycling technique was used to scan relaxation of new and aged samples of monograde and multigrade oils. Relaxation dispersions were interpreted in terms of self-diffusion and molecular rotations. Our study shows that proton T −1 1 could be very sensitive to degradation processes, especially at low Larmor frequencies. The analysis reveals a noticeable sensitivity of the involved correlation times. The pros and cons of the technique are also discussed.Fil: Ballari, Maria de Los Milagros. Fast iron oxide-induced low-field magnetic resonance imaging

    No full text
Dynamic images acquired by proton fast field-cycling magnetic resonance imaging are presented for the first time. Image contrast mediated by superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and weighted by the spin-lattice (T1) relaxation time, and both spin-lattice and spin-spin (T2) relaxation times, are discussed. Image acquisition and processing within 8 s is allowed for real-time recording of exemplary physical situations evolving in a compatible time-scale. Two simple examples are shown with the corresponding videos assembled by sequencing the acquired images. Fast iron oxide-induced low-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) constitutes the first step in the development of field-cycling functional MRI for biomedical and physical applications.Fil: Rodriguez, Gonzalo Gabriel. Low-field MRI at high magnetic field instability and inhomogeneity conditions

    No full text
Understanding the effects of the magnetic field time instabilities in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is fundamental for the success of portable and low-cost MRI hardware based on electromagnets. In this work we propose a magnetic field model that considers the field instability in addition to the inhomogeneity. We have successfully validated the model on signals acquired with a commercial NMR instrument. It was used to simulate the image defects due to different types of instability for both the spin-echo and the gradient-echo sequences. We have considered both random field fluctuations, and an instability having a dominant harmonic component. Strategies are suggested to minimize the artifacts generated by these instabilities. Images were acquired using a home-made MRI relaxometer to show the consistency of the analysis.Fil: Rodriguez, Gonzalo Gabriel. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas.
