Brain Observatory and the Continuing Study of H.M.: Interview with Jacopo Annese
No full textProfessor Jacopo Annese is director and founder of the Brain Observatory, University of California San Diego. As a computational neuroanatomist Jacopo Annese founded the Brain Observatory in 2005. At the Observatory work is under way to develop a public atlas of the human brain and a digital brain library. The Observatory also houses a brain bank. Included in the brain bank is one of the most famous cases in memory research: H.M. It is hoped that this work will help with our understanding of the brain. This innovative project, often involving technology developed in-house at the Brain Observatory was featured as the world’s most innovative brain bank by the Financial Times (December 2011). Precision Medicine in Inflammatory Bowel Disease
No full textUlcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease are traditionally defined as the two main subtypes of inflammatory bowel disease. However, a more recent view considers IBD as a spectrum of heterogeneous phenotypes with consistent differences in clinical presentation and behaviors, likely explained by differences in underlying pathogenetic mechanisms. The etiology is still elusive, and the suggested pathogenesis is a complex interplay among genetic predisposition and abnormal immune response at the mucosal intestinal level, activated by only partially identified environmental triggers leading to altered intestinal permeability and impaired handling of gut microbiota. The undeniable continuous progress of medical therapy with more frequent shifts from traditional to more advanced modalities also underlines the actual unmet needs. We are using medications with completely different mechanisms of action, with a lack of predictive factors of outcomes and response and still an unsatisfactory rate of success. In addition, we are missing still valuable and accurate markers to predict disease progression and severity in order to avoid under- or over-treatment. In such a complex scenario, it is undoubtful that the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms may improve the management and pave the way for precision and eventually personalized medicine in these patients; however, there are still several challenges that will be the focus of this review

No full textIl contributo analizza i "motivi ecumenici" presenti nel pensiero di John Wesley (fondatore del metodismo), esaminando in particolare due testi: il sermone "Catholic Spirit" (1750) e la "Letter to a Roman Catholic" (1749). Vengono mostrate le radici teologiche di tali motivi, ossia i costrutti teologici dai quali Wesley ricava (o con i quali innerva) il suo "ecumenismo": in particolare, si riflette sulla differenza tra "dottrine essenziali" (del cristianesimo) e dottrine inessenziali od "opinioni". La prospettiva di Wesley viene poi messa a confronto con alcuni testi di Erasmo da Rotterdam, che offrono significative analogie.The paper analyzes the "ecumenical motifs" in the thought of John Wesley (founder of Methodism), examining in particular two texts: the sermon "Catholic Spirit" (1750) and the "Letter to a Roman Catholic" (1749). The study shows the theological roots of these motifs, namely the theological structures from which Wesley draws (or with which he nourishes) his "ecumenism": in particular, the difference between "essential doctrines" (of Christianity) and unessential doctrines or "opinions" is considered. Wesley's perspective is then compared with some Erasmus of Rotterdam's texts, which show significant similarities

Le prime pubblicazioni e le strategie del metodismo italiano: la ricezione di Wesley e della letteratura cristiana antica
No full textIl contributo analizza le prime pubblicazioni prodotte dal metodismo italiano a partire dall’arrivo della missione wesleyana nella Penisola (1861) e descrive le strategie di questa missione nei primi anni dopo l’unità d’Italia (in particolare, fino alla fine degli anni Sessanta dell’Ottocento, con cenni ai periodi successivi). L’esame dei periodici e delle altre pubblicazioni dimostra che il metodismo italiano si concentrò non solo sulle attività pastorali e sociali, ma anche sull’approfondimento storico-teologico, centrato specialmente su John Wesley da un lato, e sulla letteratura cristiana antica dall’altro (dal momento che questa era di primario interesse per lo stesso Wesley, le due dimensioni sono strettamente intrecciate)
