Menschen mit Lernschwierigkeiten in Indien. Eine ethnologische Betrachtung
No full textIndien unterzeichnete als einer der ersten Staaten die Konvention über die Rechte von Menschen mit Behinderungen der Vereinten Nationen. Konstitutionelle Ansprüche und reale Umsetzung der Konvention klaffen jedoch weit auseinander. Dies zeigt die vorliegende ethnologische Studie am Beispiel der Lebenssituation von Menschen mit Lernschwierigkeiten in der nordindischen Stadt Varanasi. Hierbei stehen folgende Fragen im Mittelpunkt: Wie erklären Familienmitglieder, Sozialarbeiter_innen oder Astrologen die Ursachen von geistiger Behinderung? Wie gehen Leute vor Ort mit Menschen mit Lernschwierigkeiten um? Wie wirkt sich die Geburt eines Kindes mit Lernschwierigkeiten auf die soziale Interaktion der Personen und ihrer Familien aus? Auf der Grundlage einer Feldforschung in Varanasi behauptet die Autorin, dass Menschen mit Lernschwierigkeiten nicht nur über negative, sondern auch über positive kollektive Eigenschaftszuschreibungen stigmatisiert werden. Die Verkennung von Stigmatisierungsmechanismen hält diese ferner aufrecht und reproduziert sie, weil Stigmatisierungen als gegebene Tatsachen akzeptiert werden
Labor on the Line
No full textLabor on the Line provides insights into the world's largest tea-growing region of Assam. Anna-Lena Wolf examines everyday conceptualizations of justice: how they emerge, become prevalent, transform, and are negotiated by differently positioned actors on Assam's tea plantations. Academics and activists have criticized the conditions on these plantations as a form of bondage, arguing that the persistence of a colonial wage structure—characterized by low cash wages supplemented with in-kind benefits—reinforces laborers' dependence on plantations. But Wolf shows that there is more to the story. Tea plantation laborers and trade unionists formed surprising alliances with managers and plantation owners based on everyday conceptions of justice. All involved favored the old-style plantation at a time when fundamental changes were appearing in the political economy of tea production. Labor on the Line challenges the simplistic notion that dismantling tea plantations would create a better world for tea plantation laborers, by advancing notions of justice in innovative ways. No full textLabor mobility to and from tea plantations in India has been treated as an exception. Plantations continue to be imagined as unaltered enclaves with an immobile, bonded, or fixed labor force as their key feature. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in India, this article investigates forms of labor mobility to and from Assam tea plantations. While tea labor is not spatially immobile, I argue that spatial mobility does not necessarily lead to upward social mobility. Based on this observation, I reconsider the plantation in the twenty-first century in two ways: first, plantations are permeable and transforming spaces, due to ongoing labor mobility and evolving changes in the political economy of Assam tea production; second, certain forms of inequality and injustice attributed to plantation economies need to be located beyond the Plantationocene
