Aristocratic land ownership. Land ownership between the centre and the hinterland as represented in the language of notarial deeds.

    No full text
The system of land ownership between the 9th and 10th centuries was significantly influenced by a series of environmental and cultural factors mediated by the customs of those notaries tasked with certifying and registering property deeds. The language used in notarial deeds to describe real estate in the areas of Venice and Milan will be analysed here in order to reconstruct the forms that the organisation of landed property took, together with the agrarian landscape of the time, and to ascertain what resources were actually available and utilised during that historical period. In doing so, evidence will be offered of the many similarities between properties, deriving from the notaries' ability to define land organisation in a similar manner through their use of a standardised language of property ownership

Note su Francesco Bellisomi (1663-1741), bibliofilo in fuga nell'Europa confessionale

    Get PDF
The focus of the essay is the Pavia abbot Francesco Bellisomi, author of printed texts, bibliophile and in contact with many Protestants. Arrested and prosecuted by the Roman Inquisition in 1701 and escaping from inquisitorial prisons after about ten years, Bellisomi was a longtime exile in early 18th century confessional Europe. In his constant wanderings between different European countries, he was always supported materially and morally by the networks connected to the Halle-Pietism. His vicissitudes are known mainly through two printed pamphlets, one of which is in English (London 1712) and one in German (Jena 1728)

During the first half of the 13th century, Venice organized its dominion on the island of Crete through the establishment of military fiefdoms. In 1299 and 1300, two of the owners of these fiefs were engaged in a judicial dispute with the rector of the town of Chanià for prohibited gambling and other crimes

"Sarebbe più logico bruciarli". Una nota sulla censura dei libri nel fascismo

The article is devoted to the historiography on book censorship during fascism published in the last twentyfive years. Censorship was not unknown to Liberal Italy, since in 1890 Crispi introduced the need for a control by the Ministry of Interior of any political publication. Censorship acted on political texts, for example intervening on the school edition of Mazzini’s Duties of Man (1903) to erase references to republicanism, or on moral grounds in the case of sexual references contained in Marinetti’s novel Mafarka (1910). During fascism the first moves towards book censorship were made in 1926, and strenghtened in 1930. Censorship was heavily enforced since 1934, apparently after Mussolini was especially irritated by the cover of a novel which displayed an African woman embraced by an Italian man: a situation which the dictator deemed unappropriate on “racial” grounds. The most severe censorship was enforced since 1938 concerning Jewish and foreign authors. But there were relevant political and “moral” cases of censorship throughout the 1930s

« Et les grenouilles crient de joye ». Laurent Joubert et la qualité des eaux

    Get PDF
We tend to assume that in pre-modern Europe people did not drink water, considering it too risky and generally unhealthy. And yet, communities went to great lengths to ensure a supply of fresh water. The difficulty for the cultural historian is water’s very banality and ambiguity. This is why the little-known Traicté des eaux (1559), by French Renaissance physician Laurent Joubert, is such a valuable source. With reference to the water of Montbrison, where Joubert was practising medicine, he explores the question of different water sources, water quality and how to remedy this, shedding light on contemporary medical attitudes to drinking water

Vaporini e socialismo. Le memorie di Gaetano Vianello, organizzatore dei portuali veneziani

    Get PDF
In this paper, we publish the first pages of the autobiographical memoirs of Gaetano Vianello, organiser of Venetian dock workers for about thirty years, from the end of the 19th century to the advent of fascism. The text was printed in a cyclostyled edition in 1971 by Giuseppe Gaddi; today it is almost unknown. The author recalls the social context of his native island of Giudecca, his own work experiences as a child and young man, and the birth of working-class associations in Venice at the end of the 19th century (Società di mutuo soccorso tra operai, Scuola Libera Popolare, Camera del Lavoro, Partito socialista)

Chiesa e Stato nella Repubblica di Venezia. Giochi di scala

By focusing on a conflict between the bishop of Como and the patriarch of Aquileia in 1632, the article aims to show how the neatly separated roles of Church and State often mingled in the historical reality. To do so, it takes into account different scales of analysis (bishops, State authorities, Roman Curia, patricians, etc.)

Libri leciti, gesti proibiti: Thomaso Cazola medico e astrologo da Como

The article describes the final years in the life of Tommaso Cazola, an empiric physician astrologer who, in the second half of the 16th century, ran afoul of the Inquisition. None of the 70 or so books in his library are forbidden; yet the fruit of those readings, printed on flyleaves advertising the therapeutic services offered by Tommaso, is a triumph of astrology of the worst sort: another fine mixture of ‘cheese and worms’, in short. One of those sheets has come down to us, and – contrary to what is always assumed in the case of ephemeral prints for everyday use – the sheet turns out to have come from the workshop of a master typographer. If Tommaso had continued his medico-astrological practice without hanging those flyleaves in public, the Inquisition would not have been interested in this man, who, after banishment from Venice, a daring escape and imprisonment, ended his days serenely in the lagoon city
