A Comparative Evaluation Of Arch Width Changes In Extraction And Non-Extraction Cases
No full text Objectives: 1) To analyze if there were any changes in the arch width (both maxilla and mandible) in extraction and non-extraction treatment groups by comparing pretreatment and post treatment study models in the Canine, Premolar and Molar regions. 2) To compare arch width changes between extraction and non-extraction groups of patients. Method: Pre and post treatment study models of 25 patients who had 4 first-premolar extractions and 25 patients treated without extractions were randomly selected and measured. All patients underwent comprehensive orthodontic therapy with Pre-adjusted edgewise appliances at the Department of orthodontics in Rajah Muthiah Dental College and Hospital, Annamalainagar under the direction of a variety of instructors. The obtained values were subjected to statistical analysis using students paired t-tests and two-sample t test. Results: The extraction of the premolars to correct tooth size arch length discrepancy does not result in narrowing of the dental arches as no significant changes were found when extraction and non-extraction groups were compared. Extraction doesn’t result in narrowed arches.
