Development and Integration of ICT Tools for Electric Mobility

    No full text
The increasing diffusion of electric mobility requires specific attention to the end-users expectations as well as to stakeholders roles and needs. New solutions have to be proposed to improve the driving and charging experience using the electric vehicles by providing tailored tools and services. In this context, this paper shows how ICT (Information and Communications Technology) tools can allow the transition towards such a smart and sustainable mobility. Within the European project H2020 ELVITEN, with particular focus on Electric Light-category Vehicles (EL-Vs), a proper set of ICT services are proposed, including the brokering and booking service for vehicles and charging stations, the ICT platform for monitoring the electric vehicle fleets, the serious game app and the incentive management platform. In the project context, it is demonstrated that EL-Vs and related ICT services are suitable means of transport and tools, respectively, to encourage users towards a new mobility that is electric and sustainable

Integration of Satellite and LTE for Disaster Recovery

    No full text
Wireless communications are critical for public protection and disaster relief (PPDR) professionals during the emergency operations that follow natural or man-made disasters, scenarios in which both commercial and dedicated terrestrial networks often fail to provide the necessary support. The reason is threefold: they simply get destroyed by the disaster, they cannot sustain the sudden surge of network demand or they fail to deliver the necessary bandwidth and/or other QoS guarantees. Because LTE is expected to become the main wireless technology for broadband communication, a lot of studies have been devoted to assess its compliance for PPDR purposes and to find suitable architectural solutions able to meet mission-critical requirements. This approach is surely worthy, but it is based on the assumption that infrastructure-based terrestrial systems are reliable. As a consequence, in worstcase emergency scenarios appropriate guarantees can be provided only in the hypothesis of huge investment costs. Recent developments in satellite technologies are bringing the availability of non-terrestrial high performance channels, with better properties when comparing to LTE for what regards availability and reliability. On this basis, the paper proposes a network architecture based on the integration of satellite and LTE networks for both infrastructure-based and infrastructure-less scenarios. The proposal aims to provide field operators and people in distress with transparent accessibility, coverage guarantees and broadband performance when terrestrial infrastructures are lacking, and to expand their coverage, capacity and resilience otherwise

ON BALANCING COSTS AND BENEFITS IN APPLYING VR/VE TOOLS IN THE INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS SECTOR

    No full text
Virtual Reality Technology has just recently started to be implemented to major industries of Intelligent Transportation systems and, therefore, very few studies have been conducted, in order to define the actual impacts of the use of such technology. A study of indicative cost and benefits of the implementation of Virtual Reality tools and applications to major industries is to be presented. Impacts on society and users are also considered.

A Gamified Flexible Transportation Service for On-Demand Public Transport

    No full text
Present public transport services still suffer from issues such as time deviations from the static timetable, overcrowded buses, increased on board time, and long wait at bus stops. This work studies the experimental implementation of an on-demand public bus transportation service in Trikala, a medium-sized Greek city. With a view to optimize the service from both the operator's and the citizens' point of view, this paper presents an insertion heuristic solving the static multivehicle dial-a-ride problem with time windows and a fixed fleet of vehicles. Since viability of such a service depends on its ability of involving a significant number of users and getting reliable information, we tested a gamification layer, aimed at motivating public transport users to participate and behave correctly with the system. We present and discuss a novel pervasive computing architecture and various types of serious games designed to achieve these goals. We finally report early usability test results and some simulation-based indications on the design of city-scale deployable serious games to enhance public transport-based mobility

THE ACOUSTIC FIELD IS CALCULATED USING ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES. AT THE SAME TIME THE PROBLEM OF SOURCE RECOGNITION IS FACED BY PROPOSING A NON - LINEAR OPTIMIZATION TECHNIQUE, BASED ON THE USE OF A DATABASE OF KNOWN ACOUSTIC SOURCES AND THE DETAILED PHYSICAL MODELS DEVELOPED IN THIS THESIS. FIRSTLY A MODEL STRUCTURE WITH A LAYERED MEDIUM IS ASSUMED WHERE THE REFRACTIVE INDEX IS TAKENTO BE DISCRETE VALUED WHILE A THREE DIMENSIONAL VARIATION IS ASSUMED ON THE INTERFACES OF THE LAYERS. A REALISTIC THREE DIMENSIONAL MODEL OF SEA MEDIUM IN TERMS OF PROPAGATION CHARACTERISTICS IS TAKEN THROUGH THIS APPROACH AND THE ACOUSTIC FIELD IS CALCULATED ANALYTICALLY, THROUGH A GREEN'S FUNCTION FORMULATION. STARTING FROM THE COMPUTATION OF THE RESPONSE FUNCTION OF THE STRATIFIED MEDIUM, INTEGRAL EQUATION TECHNIQUES ARE EMPLOYED TO ANALYSE THE CASE OF INHOMOGENEOUS MEDIUM. FIELD CALCULATION IS CARRIED OUT FOR A SINUSOIDAL LATERAL INHOMOGENEOUS SEA MEDIUM. NUMERICAL COMPUTATIONS ARE CARRIED OUT AND THE EFFECTSOF THE INHOMOGENEITIES ARE EXAMINED. THE PROPOSED OPTIMIZATION ALGORITHM FORDEALING WITH THE SOURCE RECOGNITION PROBLEM IS BASED ON THE MINIMIZATION OF THE QUADRATIC ERROR FUNCTION BETWEEN ESTIMATED SOURCE SIGNAL VALUES AND SIGNALVALUES (ABSTRACT TRUNCATED
