Extranjeros en Varsovia durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Pasaportes genuinos y papeles falsos, internamiento, canje y exterminio
This paper presents the research findings of a comparative study on the experiences of foreign Jews and Polish dual nationals who were in or passed through Warsaw during World War II. The focus is on Argentines and Americans, briefly referencing those from other countries. It covers both genuine citizens, holders of false papers, and their immediate family members. It analyzes the similarities and differences in the evolution of their treatment after the German occupation and their confinement in the Warsaw Ghetto until the onset of its liquidation (Grossaktion). It also describes the changing policies adopted by the Germans towards these foreigners, which were based on the neutral or belligerent status of the countries they were or claimed to be citizens of. In the case of holders of false papers, it mentions some networks and methods of obtaining them.
Coastal land use in the Maltese islands: a description and appraisal
The area of the Maltese Islands is 316 km , and with an official coastal length of 180 km(^2) possess a high ratio of coastal length to area. The physical properties of the coast include a highly indented and largely accessible coastline having a low sloping profile, on the north, east and south-east littoral of Malta, presenting inlets, bays and deep harbours. Most of the recreational, industrial and coastal residential areas are situated around these areas together with a wide range of fortifications and military defensive structures built as part of the coastal defensive network of Malta over the last five centuries. In contrast, the other parts of the coast, including Gozo, consists of a largely inaccessible coastline made up of cliffs and boulder scree slopes with the few indentations marking sandy beaches. These areas have a high aesthetic quality. The rapid pace of development over last half-century has witnessed an economic transformation from an economy based on British military spending to one based on the development of coastal areas for marine-related services, tourism and residential and second-home development. Coastal land use conflicts have intensified with economic development and as people have sought to make a more use of the coast. This thesis is concerned with the evaluation of the coastal land use in the Maltese Islands. A historical overview of the coast is first presented, then a methodology for the mapping, surveying and estimation of the land uses along the coastal zone of the Maltese Islands is developed. This is based on a number of coastal field surveys that the author participated in between 1989 and 1998. The coastal zone was divided into sixteen segments and mapping is covered by sixteen land uses. The main results were that coastal development was centred in areas where a high natural coastal indentation and good physical accessibility of the coast were present, these, in turn, gave rise to land use conflict. In addition, civil engineering works and modifications such as rock-cutting, jetties, breakwaters and, in densely populated areas, promenades, intensified land use conflict. A notable difference in the type of coastal development processes to the north (tourism) and south (industry) of the Great Fault is evident. The thesis also includes the part played by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority in influencing coastal land uses, the main land use modifications proposed in the European Union accession talks and a brief assessment of the land use situation in selected localities in 2003
Land and land conflict in the Palestinian-Israeli peace process:1990-1999
This thesis examines the importance of the debates and struggle over land in the Oslo Accord and immediately post-Oslo. It does this by first situating the conflict
over land in the historical context of the spread of Zionism from the 1880s, culminating in the establishment of the State of Israel in Palestine in 1948. It then reviews and contrasts the policies on land and settlement of the Israeli Labour and Likud parties. The focus of the thesis is an assessment of Israeli settlement policy on the West Bank and Gaza-Strip after the Oslo Agreement of 1993. It examines the sequences of Israeli-Palestinian agreements that have divided Palestinian land into different categories and argues that these categories and the problems they have created have ignored the historical importance of land in the conflict between Israel
and Palestine.
The thesis argues that the classification of land is intended to further subjugate Palestine to the political and economic dominance of Israel, and that the
formulation for discussing land issues undermines the possibility for the establishment of a strong and economically independent Palestinian state. The thesis submits that the persistence of Israeli settlement policy and the manner of Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank has not encouraged the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) to conduct a comprehensive land survey and registration
procedure. Moreover. Israeli strategy in the post-Oslo period has been to promote the cantonisation of Palestine to ensure that any future Palestinian state will remain
economically weak and politically disjointed
Development of Therapies for Spinal Muscular Atrophy Using Gene Therapy and Nanotechnology
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a genetic disease which is characterized by muscle weakness and atrophy. The disease arises from mutations in the survival motor neuron 1 (SMN1) gene causing degeneration of spinal cord motor neurons. No effective treatment is currently available for SMA however it may be possible to treat the disease using gene therapy. The aim of this project is to develop potential therapies for SMA by investigating different viral and non-viral gene therapy vectors and assessing the effect of potential disease modifying genes. The data collected are described under four chapters as follows:
1: The aim here was to develop a novel approach based on polymer nanoparticles (polymersomes) for gene delivery. Encapsulation of DNA by polymersomes was optimised and polymersomes were used to restore SMN levels into a fibroblast cell line isolated from a child with severe SMA. 2: The ability of adeno-associated virus serotype 5 (AAV5) vectors expressing GFP to transduce the central nervous system (CNS) following intravenous injection was tested in neonatal wild-type mice. Overall transduction efficiency of AAV5-GFP in the brain was low and very few lumbar spinal cord neurons were found to be transduced, suggesting that AAV5 is not an appropriate vector to treat diseases such as SMA. 3: AAV6 was used to overexpress hnRNP R in an in vivo model of SMA. hnRNP R is a candidate disease modifying gene for SMA due to its interaction with SMN and β-actin. However this strategy had only a very marginal effect on the phenotype and life-span of this SMA mouse model. 4: Finally AAV9 was used to silence phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) in an in vivo model of SMA. PTEN is a negative regulator of growth which acts on the PI3K/Akt pathway. AAV9-mediated PTEN silencing resulted in a significant increase in the lifespan of a SMA mouse model coupled with an improved phenotype.
In conclusion this work highlights two major findings: i) polymersomes can be used to deliver SMN plasmid DNA to restore SMN mRNA and protein levels in an in vitro model of SMA; ii) AAV9-mediated silencing of PTEN can improve the phenotype and increase lifespan of a SMA mouse model

Eyewitness accounts of 'the Indies' in the Later Medieval West: reading, reception, and re-use (c. 1300-1500)
Despite increased mercantile and missionary contact between the Latin West and India and China between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, scholars have often
noted that Western Europe's knowledge of India, as judged by geographical texts from the period, changed surprisingly little during this time. This thesis employs
some of the methodologies of reception studies in order to investigate the role played by first-hand travel accounts in the construction and change of concepts of the Indies
during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. It investigates in particular the reception in Italy, France and England of the information about the area known as
India or the 'three Indies' presented in the texts produced by two Italian travellers to the East: the Divisament dou monde of the Venetian merchant Marco Polo (c. 1298),
and the Relatio of the Franciscan missionary Odorico da Pordenone (1330).
The thesis falls into three distinct parts. In the first section, I contextualise the project with a broad survey of the Latin European ideas of India in the late thirteenth
and early fourteenth centuries and with an outline of the travellers' journeys and their contexts. The second part of the thesis provides a broad overview of the
circumstances of diffusion of the two travel accounts in England, France and Italy over the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, before conducting a detailed, manuscriptbased
investigation of the ways in which the two accounts of India were approached by their early readers. This investigation focuses principally upon the presentation
and possible modes of reception of the texts' geographical and ethnographic details and relies heavily on the evidence of presentation, paratext and the traces of reading
present in the physical texts of the accounts.
The third and final part of the thesis considers the evidence of the reception of elements from first-hand travel accounts in other textual and cartographic
productions. Proceeding on the basis of case studies, it demonstrates that first-hand accounts of 'the Indies' were used by the authors and compilers of cosmo graphical
texts in this period in a variety of ways. It suggests, however, that the manner and context of the deployment of elements from such accounts often tended to assimilate
these with, rather than distinguish them from, the writings of accepted authorities. This section also contrasts the way that details from travel accounts were re-used in
texts with the way the same information was handled in the composition of maps. Finally, by analysis of the ways eyewitness accounts of the Indies were re-used in
certain ambiguous and comic texts produced in this period, the thesis sheds light on an underexplored aspect of the reception both of eyewitness information and of the
genres in which it appeared. The appendices contain tables presenting information relative to the manuscripts discussed that support the arguments presented in section
two
The Retomada and beyond: female narrative agency in contemporary Brazilian cinema (1997-2006)
PhDSince the inception of film production in Brazil, women have been involved in all
capacities including directing, acting and a variety of other roles behind the camera.
During the 1990s and into the new millennium (a period sometimes termed the
Retomada or re-birth of Brazilian cinema), there has been a large increase in films
which feature notable female characters in prominent narrative positions and in the
number of women directors successfully making their feature-length debut. Despite
this, critical attention to such characters and directors, beyond a merely descriptive or
numerical focus, is lacking and the established class-oriented social tradition remains
the dominant language in criticism. With a view to addressing this relative critical
neglect, as well as inadequacies in still embryonic studies, this study suggests new
critical approaches relevant to the specificity of women’s experience in Brazil and
analyses the representation of female characters in five representative films of the
Retomada period. The study further aligns its predominant focus on female characters
with the socio-political critical orientation that has established certain films as
important cultural markers in Brazil, for example Deus e o Diabo na terra do sol
/Black God, White Devil and Cidade de Deus/City of God. For this purpose, it again
departs from the traditional emphasis on class and brings, rather, the specificity of the
women’s movement in Brazil to bear. In order to critically assess how these specific
contextual developments are reflected in the films analysed, it further distances itself
from mainstream gender criticism in film and advances the use of the construct of
agency, bridging Paul Smith’s notion of subject dis-cerning and Anthony Giddens’
theory of structuration. It also opens perspectives for future work by briefly engaging
with the subject of female directors

Adipose tissue derived factors in obesity, inflammation & energy homeostasis
Obesity is the foremost contributory factor in the progression to type 2 diabetes
mellitus (T2DM). Moreover, chronic inflammation, through activation of innate
immunity is proposed to link obesity, insulin resistance and T2DM. Adipose tissue,
traditionally considered a storage compartment for triglycerides, also functions as an
active endocrine organ. Adipocyte-secreted products, termed adipokines, may link
obesity-associated inflammation and insulin resistance. Adipokines exert multiple
effects on insulin sensitisation, glucose homeostasis, inflammatory processes or
central systems mediating energy expenditure. This thesis principally examined two
adipokines; resistin and adiponectin. Resistin and components of innate immunity
were assessed in human obesity. In-vitro analysis established that resistin was
expressed and secreted by human adipocytes. Furthermore, key factors in the innate
immune pathway were highly expressed in obese and T2DM adipose tissue. This
thesis further explored the pro-inflammatory actions of resistin in adipocytes. Resistin
stimulated the secretion of inflammatory cytokines from adipocytes and, the
expression of key intermediates of the innate immune and insulin signalling pathways.
Clinical studies entailed examination of resistin as a marker of inflammation in
childhood obesity. Serum analysis revealed gender-differences in resistin levels in
obese children. Furthermore, bacterial endotoxin correlated with several markers of
inflammation and cardiovascular disease; suggesting endotoxin as a contributor to
inflammation in childhood obesity. This thesis subsequently examined another
adipokine, adiponectin; considered to have a `ying-and-yang' relationship with
resistin. Studies explored a central role for adiponectin in energy homeostasis. Gelfiltration
liquid chromatography established that the adiponectin trimer was
predominant in human cerebrospinal fluid. Such identification of trimeric adiponectin
in vivo implicates the pharmacologically generated globular adiponectin in central
regulation of energy expenditure. In conclusion, resistin may serve as a pathogenic
pro-inflammatory factor, exacerbating inflammation within adipose tissue; potentially
contributing to the progression of obesity-driven T2DM. Alternatively, adiponectin
may have favourable central actions, influencing energy expenditure through its basic
trimeric form. Collectively, this thesis suggests that resistin and adiponectin, with a
range of opposing properties, may substantially affect whole-body metabolism
