    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Immunohistochemical determination of Ang-1, Ang-2 and Tie-2 in placentas of sows at 30, 60 and 114 days of gestation and validation through a bioinformatic approach

Angiopoietins (Ang-1, Ang-2) participate in vascular development and placental growth, both bind to Tie-2. This study aimed to determine the localization of angiopoietins in placental development of sows by immunohistochemistry and to validate the gene expression during gestation through a bioinformatic approach. Samples were collected from fifteen maternal-fetal interface from approximately 30 (n = 5), 60 (n = 5) and 114 (n = 5) days of gestation for immunohistochemistry. A bioinformatic approach was performed by re-analysis of public datasets to determine the increase or decrease of genes involved in angiogenesis during pregnancy. There was no significant statistical difference of Ang-1 during gestation, although there was a tendency to increase from mid- to term-gestation (P = 0.7680). A notable decrease of Ang-2 was observed from early- to term-pregnancy (P ≤ 0.05), consistent with the gene expression determined through bioinformatics. Furthermore, there were greater abundances of Tie-2 at both early and at term periods, but lesser abundances at mid-gestation (P ≤ 0.05). The bioinformatics approach indicated that genes related to biological processes such as angiogenesis (i.e., development and morphogenesis of blood vessels) were expressed to a greater extent in early gestation as compared with later in gestation. The Ang-1 gene expression related to cell maturation, response to hypoxia and apoptosis, however, increased as gestation period advanced. In conclusion, angiopoietins may have an important role in the vascular development thus ensuring adequate placental growth in sows. The presence of angiopoietins in the trophoblast suggests a specific role for these pro-angiogenic factors in the tissue formation at the maternal-fetal interface.Fil: Fiorimanti, Mariana Rita. Chemokine and prolactin secretion is modified by Ang II and Ang-(1-7) in decidualized compared to non-decidualized human endometrial stromal cells (T-HESC)

    No full text
To analyze the effect of Ang II and Ang-(1-7) on the secretory profile of human endometrial stromal cells (T-HESC) decidualized in vitro. T-HESC were incubated or not (control) with dibutiryl-cAMP+medroxyprogesterone acetate (db-cAMP+MPA), with or without estradiol (E2) for 4 or 6 days (d). The peptides (125-500 nM) were added at time 0, or 4d. The participation of Ang II receptors, Ang-(1-7) receptor Mas, and NFAT, was analyzed by preincubation with losartan, PD123319, A-779, and INCA-6, respectively, prior to stimulation with the peptides. Prolactin (PRL), IL-8 and MCP-1 levels in 2 or 6d culture supernatants, were determined by ELISA. Differences were considered statistically significant with p <0.05. Ang II nor Ang-(1-7) induced PRL secretion. Respect to control, IL-8, but not MCP-1 levels, increased after 2d with Ang II, effect inhibited by losartan.Ang II or Ang-(1-7) cannot induce decidualization of T-HESC; once induced, it would be enhanced by Ang II and disadvantaged by Ang-(1-7). The peptides differentially regulates the production of chemokines in the endometrial stroma, showing opposite effects in non-decidualized compared to decidualized cells. Ang II and Ang-(1-7) would be acting through AT1R/NFAT and Mas, respectively.Fil: Sotelo, Agustina Daniela. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Ang Kasama: Agapay na Sanaysay sa Librong Kampuhan (The Comrade: A Companion Essay to the Book Kampuhan)

    No full text
This essay proposes a reading of my book, Kampuhan (2024), a collection of 55 poems about the life of revolutionaries in a secret encampment. Adapted from the poetics component of my master’s thesis of the same title, the essay is a shortened version of the section that focuses on Jodi Dean’s Theory of the Comrade (2020) as a framework and perspective in understanding the personas and objects, and their milieu as depicted in the poems. Dean presents the Comrade as a summing up of the practice of communism and unionism in the world using the four theses of the comrade which highlight the essential qualities of a communist, thereby making clear the Comrade as a theory of “political belonging”. I employ Virgilio Enriquez’s Kapwa (1983) as the filter to fully translate Comrade into Kasama, and in doing so, I assert that the Kasama is the political Kapwa. Using Kasama as the framework, the readers will see the ordinary and everyday life of revolutionaries in the camp as examples the theses of the comrade/kasama. Through this reading, I assert that the collection ultimately wants the reader to meet, perhaps shake the hand, of the comrade/communist
