I semiochimici nella difesa integrata del melo in Trentino-Alto Adige
With its 28,000 hectares, Trentino - South Tyrol region is the main apple-producing area in Italy and one of the most important
apple-growing district in Europe. Codling moth (Cydia pomonella) is the key pest of apple orchards and economic losses
associated with its infestation could be significant if not adequately controlled. Since the early Nineties area-wide applications of
pheromone mating disruption (MD) has been implemented in the region for the control of codling moth. At present, after 25
years of constant increase of the treated surface, mating disruption is applied on about 24,000 ha i.e. 85% of the total apple
growing area. For a complete control of the pest MD needs to be integrated with a post-blossom insecticide (methoxyfenozide or
chlorantraniliprole), generally applied when the eggs of the first generation start hatching. While the main target is still codling
moth, the multi-species dispensers are sometime applied to control leafrollers or oriental fruit moth. Once largely used, handapplied
reservoir dispensers are nowadays gradually replaced by aerosol technology that has shown comparable efficacy and
reduced application costs. Additional insecticide applications potentially required to control new invasive alien species like
Halyomorpha halys, the northward expansion of Ceratitis capitata, or the new outbreaks of apple proliferation disease vectored
by Cacopsylla picta and Cacopsylla melanoneura can jeopardize the economic sustainability of MD application and foster
research institutions and advisory services to find alternative control technique
Behavioral manipulation for pest control
Pest control is moving towards a dramatic reduction in pesticide-based approaches in favor of more eco-friendly strategies characterized by the promotion of ecological intensification of agriculture and reduction of human inputs (especially pesticides) [...

Strumenti per il monitoraggio e controllo di Halyomorpha halys basati su semiochimici e vibrazioni, ed esperienze di “citizen science”
During 2016 the first individuals of the brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys, were found also in the Province of
Trento and in the three-year period 2017-2019 the species continued its expansion on the territory, settling also in the main apple
growing area of Val di Non, with populations that in 2019 inflicted the first significant damage. Therefore, in order to face this
threat, an operational group was created to coordinate the activities of all technicians, researchers and producers involved in this
issue in the Province of Trento. In addition to traditional information and monitoring activities, the staff of the Mach Foundation
(FEM/C3A) has developed an application for smartphones, BugMap, which has made it possible, on the one hand, to automate the
collection and validation of sampling data from technicians and, on the other, to develop a “citizen science” program in which
reports made by volunteer citizens are taken into account. With regard to control methods, in addition to insecticides, which have
shown only partial effectiveness, a number of alternative methods are being evaluated. In fact, research is underway to implement
pheromone traps already on the market with vibrational signals and/or different architectures able to improve capture efficiency
