Robert Buchanan 1841-1901: an assessment of his career.
PhDRobert Buchanan was widely regarded during his
lifetime as a poet of distinction, a capable and powerful
novelist, and a critic of some perception, yet his name is
now associated only with one regrettable episode, while
those of lesser men and women continue to be remembered for
work inferior to his. A man possessing large reserves of
energy, and pressed to write for a living at an early age,
he produced much work that deserves the oblivion it has
found; but his early verse, expressing his profound compassion
for the sufferings of the unfortunate in the simplest
language, some of his ballads, and not a little of his
later more vatic verse, is still worthy of study. As a
novelist his work is provocative and readable, but too
often descends to the level of the sentimental melodrama
which earned him, for a while, a very good income from the
stage. As a critic he was not profound, but was quick to
detect and praise expression of his own sympathy for humanity
that came to represent for him art's highest aspiration;
Dickens, Browning and Whitman were his heroes, and for the
last two he did sterling work in helping them to gain widespread
recognition. As a polemist he rushed into several
arenas, for some of which his talents were not especially
suited; but he publicly supported C. S. Parnell and Oscar
Wilde when few found the courage to do so. An interesting
man of impressive variety and undoubted talent has found an
undeserved neglect, and a full-scale critical biography of
Robert Buchanan is long overdue

Construction time and cost for post-tensioned timber buildings
This paper describes post-tensioned timber alternative designs for a six-storey office building in New Zealand. The building has long-span timber-concrete composite floors supported on laminated veneer lumber beams, columns and walls. Lateral loads are resisted with moment-resisting post-tensioned timber frames in one direction and post-tensioned cantilever timber walls in the other direction. This paper compares the time and cost of timber construction with the concrete building actually being constructed. Construction times of the timber and concrete buildings are found to be almost identical. The cost of the timber alternative is approximately 6% more than concrete or steel designs. This paper demonstrates the opportunity for post-tensioned timber to compete with concrete and steel for multistorey long-span office buildings, providing a more sustainable alternative
Multi-storey prestressed timber buildings in New Zealand
This paper describes recent research and development of a new system for multi-storey prestressed timber buildings in New Zealand. The new system gives opportunities for much greater use of timber and engineered wood products in large buildings, using innovative technologies for creating high-quality buildings with large open spaces, excellent living and working environments, and resistance to hazards such as earthquakes, fires and extreme weather events
Lateral performance of a Pres-Lam frame designed for gravity loads
This paper analyses the lateral load performance of a post-tensioned timber (Pres-Lam) frame which was designed with the primary function of supporting gravity loading. A full scale, two bay frame was used and subjected to quasi-static horizontal displacement. A total of four tests were performed, one with only the post-tensioning cables to resist horizontal loading and three with the addition of sacrificial steel elements externally attached and acting as dissipative reinforcing. This external reinforcing increased the moment capacity of the frame connections and the ability of the frame to release energy through hysteretic damping. Following a description of the test setup the results show that although the primary functions of the post-tensioning is to reduce section height and increase bay length under gravity loading it will also provide a significant contribution to the lateral resistance of the structure. Finally, a simplified design procedure is presented which allows assessing the magnitude of this contribution

BUCHANAN Y EL DISEÑO: (Buchanan para diseñadores)
This book aims to unravel the work of one of the most important thinkers in the design disciplines due to the impact he has had on the production of knowledge, professional practice and design education. This is a work of great value for students and academics, as it will allow them to approach Richard Buchanan\u27s thought, recognize the value of his contributions, discuss them, question them and, if possible, even continue them. Despite being one of the most important, it is also little known among students, since in order to enter into his thought there is first the language barrier, since the great majority of the texts and video conferences that he has given in universities around the world are in English and are not subtitled. The second obstacle for those who do know the language, perhaps, is the structure of his texts, since in them he addresses problems of the design disciplines that are already complex. Thus, although the author is not incomprehensible, perhaps he does require an investment of time and effort, which are two things that are generally not available when one is inserted in the university dynamic, since academic-administrative tasks tend to consume it. With the objective of collaborating in the understanding and discussion of Buchanan\u27s ideas and bringing them closer to the entire academic community, with students as a priority, the authors who participated in this collective effort took on the task of identifying guiding lines in Buchanan\u27s thought, through his texts and conferences.
Buchanan and Design is a book that presents the results of researchers located in different universities in the country, members of the Design Researchers Network. This work aims to identify the perspectives that have had the greatest impact on the understanding of design disciplines, such as graphic design, industrial design, fashion design, interior design, interaction design, service design, among others. The findings are of great academic value because they allow, first, to present a key author in the understanding of design to a new audience, perhaps because the language did not allow an in-depth approach; second, to recognize central ideas of the author that have had a significant impact in different areas of design; third, to extend his ideas to new fields and current practices to understand the design disciplines. These findings were made possible thanks to the collective review of the author\u27s publications, interviews and conferences that have been saved on the Internet.
Diaphragm connections in structures with rocking timber walls
Tall timber structures require lateral load-resisting elements which are very stiff and strong without complex connections. Post-tensioned timber (Pres-Lam) walls provide such properties and can also limit damage in case of extreme seismic events. Low damage can only be guaranteed if the connections between the walls and the diaphragm can transfer the horizontal loads and accommodate the displacement incompatibilities from the seismic rocking of the walls. This paper describes an experimental program on a post-tensioned timber wall specimen with ten different wall-to-diaphragm connections. The test results show that the degree of decoupling between rotational and translational deformations can significantly affect the strength and stiffness of the overall wall-beam system. A cost analysis showed that the higher the degree of decoupling, the more expensive the connection. If the wall-to-diaphragm interaction is not eliminated by decoupling at the connection, both the strength and stiffness of the wall-beam system are increased. The level of enhancement can be determined by an iterative procedure which is based on equilibrium equations and the stiffness of the floor beams and the connection
Buchanan Hollow Nut Company Rebranding and Research
A marketing plan was designed for Buchanan Hollow Nut Company (BHNC) in the summer of 2016 to redesign the company brand. Additionally, the author conducted research to determine if the implementation of bar codes and scanning would improve internal efficiency.
Utilizing the company’s owner, and famous artist, Sharleen Robson, the author created a tasteful watercolor design to update the logo for BHNC. Furthermore, by contacting the current packaging company, Legend Packaging Group, the author received estimated costs for adding a bar code to each product. These barcodes were then printed and added to the processing boxes in the storage facility and individual bags available for purchase
