On the assimilation of absolute geodetic dynamic topography in a global ocean model: impact on the deep ocean state

    No full text
General ocean circulation models are not perfect. Forced with observed atmospheric fluxes they gradually drift away from measured distributions of temperature and salinity. We suggest data assimilation of absolute dynamical ocean topography (DOT) observed from space geodetic missions as an option to reduce these differences. Sea surface information of DOT is transferred into the deep ocean by defining the analysed ocean state as a weighted average of an ensemble of fully consistent model solutions using an error-subspace ensemble Kalman filter technique. Success of the technique is demonstrated by assimilation into a global configuration of the ocean circulation model FESOM over 1 year. The dynamic ocean topography data are obtained from a combination of multi-satellite altimetry and geoid measurements. The assimilation result is assessed using independent temperature and salinity analysis derived from profiling buoys of the AGRO float data set. The largest impact of the assimilation occurs at the first few analysis steps where both the model ocean topography and the steric height (i.e. temperature and salinity) are improved. The continued data assimilation over 1 year further improves the model state gradually. Deep ocean fields quickly adjust in a sustained manner: A model forecast initialized from the model state estimated by the data assimilation after only 1 month shows that improvements induced by the data assimilation remain in the model state for a long time. Even after 11 months, the modelled ocean topography and temperature fields show smaller errors than the model forecast without any data assimilation

The activities and work of architect Domenico Trezzini (1670–1734),and the masters that arrived in Russia with him, have been researchedfor a long time, and many contentions have been concretised ordisproven at various times. This article focuses on the issue of howmasters from a single area – Ticino, Switzerland – ended up creatingimportant fortifications, palaces and churches in the Russian Empireduring the reign of Peter the Great at the beginning of 18th century. The author describes the movement of Trezzini and the Ticino mastersfrom Copenhagen to Moscow as reported in various historical sourcesand the works of Danish and Russian researchers

. The article discusses the development of the interest of English-speaking historians in the foreign investment policy of Sergey Witte. The paper also examines the role of the Secret Memorandum of Sergey Wittein the understanding of the foreign investment in the Russian economy. The author shows that Russian and English-speaking historians, despite the political upheavals of the 20th century, were engaged in a scholarly conversation in their discussion of the subject

Changes in tidal dynamics in response to sea level rise in the Sylt-Rømø Bight (Wadden Sea)

    No full text
The Wadden Sea is a complex coastal system where sea level rise (SLR), tidal dynamics, and geomorphology interact non-linearly. Today, the functioning of coastal ecosystems and their services in this region, historically resilient to natural changes in sea level, is at risk due to climate change-induced SLR. This study investigates the changes in tidally induced transport pathways of passive tracers, while providing a comprehensive analysis of tidal inundation, asymmetry, and current velocities under different SLR scenarios projected for 2050. The Sylt-Rømø Bight, a semi-enclosed basin, serves as the study site. Using FESOM-C coastal ocean model with a Lagrangian tracking module on a high-resolution unstructured mesh (up to 2 m resolution in the intertidal zone), we simulate tidal dynamics under SLR scenarios based on projections under low (SSP1-2.6) and high (SSP5-8.5) emission scenarios. Results show submerged areas increase by 2–3%, corresponding to a 4–7% loss of intertidal zones by 2050. As the increased depth and inundation affect the system, tidal channels show contrasting changes in current velocities, suggesting shifts in transport pathways. Meanwhile, weakening tidal asymmetry points to a shift toward a more lagoon-like system, leading to a subsequent reduction in outflowing net transport of passive tracers by up to 10%. This study offers insights into tidal transport patterns in the bight, emphasizing the separation between the southwestern and northeastern regions, both in current and future scenarios. It also provides a methodology for analyzing and explaining SLR-induced changes in the dynamics of shallow, tidally dominated areas. The findings underscore the importance of understanding the complex hydrodynamic response to SLR in coastal areas to meaningfully assess its impacts on tidal ecosystems and to develop efficient mitigation strategies for coastal protection

I assume that your objective of ’Economics 101’ is to try to understand how the economy works instead of going through an economic curriculum. If so you are guaranteed to have fun. I personally undertook a similar journey ten years back. I would say that it is better to understand the principles of economics and then try to understand the economy/economic situation of any given country. My recommendations (for BSc students and everyone who is interested in economics101) are based on my own readings: Sloman’s ”Essentials of economics;” Gwartney et al. ”Economics: Private Public Choice;” Jesus Huerta de Soto’s ”The Austrian School: Market Order and Entrepreneurial Creativity;” Rodrik’s ”Economics Rules;” Foley’s ”Adam’s fallacy: a guide to economic theology;” De Soto’s ”The mystery of capital: Why capitalism triumphs in the West and fails everywhere else;” Harford’s ”The Undercover Economist;” Levitt and Dubner’s ”Freakonomics.”This Paper should not be reported as representing the views of Central Bank of Armenia. Plato’s Gorgius: an attempt to an axiological commentary

    No full text
In his new paper Sergey S. Avanesov (Tomsk State University) analyses the concepts of ‘intermediate’ being, ‘preference’ and the hierarchy of values developed in Plato’s dialogue against the background of Classical moral philosophy. This study of Ancient axiology continues a previous article by the same author, also published in this journal (vol. I, issue 2)

The article is devoted to the novel of Sergey Samsonov – The Kamlayev Anomaly. The focus is on the issue of a creative man and his creations. The author maximizes the notion of creative work, going beyond the limits of the sphere of music and bringing it to the sphere of life itself. Samsonov is trying to analyze the state of being of the 21st century human and the cause of human spiritual crisis. Samsonov\u27s writing is considered in the context of the new realism. Author\u27s creative method is also compared with the debatable concept of metamodermism

The Latest Version of Circumstances and Cause of Death of Sergey Yesenin. From Order to Exhumation

    No full text
The article presents the latest version of circumstances and cause of death of Sergey Yesenin. It should be seen as an edition as well as addition to the recently published monograph Murder of Sergey Yesenin. Criminalistic, Historical and Literary Study (Szczytno 2009), where the primary version of the poet’s murder was depicted. The following revised version reveals some new figures which were directly involved in the tragic death of Yesenin, i.e. Iosif Stalin as the initiator or Georgy Ustinov and Vasily Nazarov as the executors of that perfidious deed. The author projects a plan of the plot, a calendar of the last days and hours of Yesenin’s life, brings out unknown facts and hypotheses which prove a planned homicide committed by members of Soviet secret police (Joint State Political Directorate) and, therefore, disqualify the official version of suicide
