'Follow me': a web-based, location-sharing architecture for large, indoor environments

    No full text
We leverage the ubiquity of bluetooth-enabled devices and propose a decentralized, web-based architecture that allows users to share their location by following each other in the style of Twitter. We demonstrate a prototype that operates in a large building which generates a dataset of detected bluetooth devices at a rate of ~30 new devices per day, including the respective location where they were last detected. Users then query the dataset using their unique bluetooth ID and share their current location with their followers by means of unique URIs that they control. Our separation between producers (the building) and consumers (the users) of bluetooth device location data allows us to create socially-aware applications that respect user's privacy while limiting the software necessary to run on mobile devices to just a web browser

Random Tree Optimization for the Construction of the Most Parsimonious Phylogenetic Trees

    No full text
With the availability of ever-increasing gene sequence data across a large number of species, reconstruction of phylogenetic trees to reveal the evolution relationship among those species becomes more and more important. In this paper, we focus on the construction of the most parsimonious phylogenetic trees given sequence data of a group of species as parsimony is probably the most widely used among all tree building algorithms [4]. The major contribution of this paper is the presentation of a novel algorithm, the random tree optimization (RTO) algorithm based on cross-entropy method [16], for the construction of the most parsimonious phylogenetic trees. We analyze the RTO algorithm in the framework of expectation maximization (EM) and point out the similarities and differences between traditional EM algorithm and the RTO algorithm

Simple, zero-feedback, collaborative beamforming for emergency radio

    No full text
Collaborative beamforming among a set of distributed terminals is studied, assuming a) no specialized RF hardware for carrier frequency synchronization, and b) zero feedback from destination (either in the form of pilot signals or explicit messages). A solution is provided for conventional radios in relevant critical applications, such as emergency radio. The proposed scheme simply exploits lack of synchronization among distributed carriers, operating at the same nominal carrier frequency. It is shown that such beamforming is possible and its performance is analytically quantified.Greece. General Secretariat of Research and Technolog
