    The Illuminated Lyric of Lafracoth

    A medieval historical fiction in dramatic form for older adolescents and adults, this verse play depicts a person of conscience in early 12th century Ireland. This work is intended for late adolescents and adults who have either acquired or are engaged in higher education. The author envisions uses in classrooms, drama and book clubs in which conscience sensitive character analyses and discussions of moral life in and out of religious contexts are deemed worthy of pursuit. The original 2008 version of The Lyric of Lafracoth without illustrations can be found at: https://hdl.handle.net/1805/16779 In this illustrated version, artist Deborah C. Galvin was asked to create five illuminations for the letters P, A, C, E and M which figure prominently in the conflicted story of Lafracoth and her father. Deborah obliged but was not satisfied with just five. Over the two years 2008-2010, she completed sixteen times that many. In 2012, these were exhibited in a crafted parchment paper version of the manuscript at The Helen Beiser MD Art Show during the 59th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in San Francisco and again that same year at the Fourth Annual Indiana University School of Medicine Art Exhibition in Indianapolis

    Markov-Airy method for electromagnetic fields in layered structures and microsphere-stabilized planar resonators

    In this work, a new technique to calculate the behavior of electromagnetic fields in layered structures is presented. Based upon keeping track of reflections throughout the structure, this technique is a special case of the method of moments. Analysis of layered scatterers, waveguides, and resonators is presented for structures possessing rectangular, cylindrical, and spherical symmetry. In rectangular coordinates, exact formulas are presented for calculating the group delay, group delay dispersion, and third-order dispersion upon reflection or transmission. For the first time, exact formulas are derived for calculating the dispersion of a planar waveguide up to third order. The algorithm has been implemented and subsequently validated by testing it against analytic solutions. In the second section of the thesis, a new method of constructing a cavity is demonstrated. A microsphere is placed in between two high-reflecting mirrors. Depending on the separation of the mirrors, the spheres were observed to either lower or raise the lasing threshold. Models of the cavity were developed and agree with observed data.     Injection of botulinum toxin for treatment of chronic lateral epicondylitis: systematic review and meta-analysis

    Objectives: lateral epicondylitis can be chronic and difficult to manage with conservative measures such as physical therapy and corticosteroid injection. We attempted to determine the efficacy of botulinumtoxin for the treatment of chroniclateral epicondylitis.Methods: we searched PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Google Scholar, EMBASE, PEDro, and ISI web of Science databases from inception until November 2009. Studies were included if they used any formulation of botulinumtoxin A for treatment of chroniclateral epicondylitis and reported at least 1 pain outcome. One author extracted the relevant data using a standardized data extraction sheet and a second author checked the data. We performed a meta-analysis by computing effect sizes for each study separately for pain and grip strength at 3 months after injection. Impact of bias was assessed independently by 2 authors.Results: the search found 10 studies relevant to the question. Four of these were randomized controlled trials that could be pooled in a meta-analysis. Results showed a moderate effect for pain favoring botulinumtoxin (effect size ?0.5, 95% CI ?0.9, ?0.1, I2 = 56%) at 3 months and a no effect for grip strength. Qualitative analysis of the studies that could not be pooled also showed improvement in pain, but was limited by potential bias.Conclusions: present literature provides support for use of botulinumtoxin A injections into the forearm extensor muscles (60 units) for treatment of chronictreatment-resistant lateral epicondylitis.     Aerodynamics of a cycling wheel in crosswind by coaxial volumetric velocimetry

    The aerodynamic characteristics of a modern road cycling wheel in crosswind are studied through force measurements and 3D velocimetry in TU Delft’s Open Jet Facility. The performance of the 62 mm deep rim is evaluated for two tire profiles, and yaw angles up to 20◦ . All measurements are executed at 12.5 m/s (45 km/h) freestream- and wheel-rotational velocity. The wheel’s rim-tire section in crosswind is found to behave similar to an airfoil at incidence, ultimately resulting in a reduction of the wheel’s aerodynamic resistance with increasing yaw angle magnitude. This trend, also referred to as the sail-effect, is limited by the stall angle of the tire-rim profile.     Comparison of Two Informant Questionnaire Screening Tools for Dementia and Mild Cognitive Impairment: AD8 and IQCODE

    Background—Dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are under-recognized in community settings. This may be due in part to the lack of brief dementia screening tools available to clinicians. We compared two brief, informant-based screening tests: the AD8 and the Informant Questionnaire on Cognitive Decline in the Elderly (IQCODE) in a community-based neurology practice in the Midwestern United States Methods—We examined 186 consecutive patients (44 controls, 13 with MCI, and 129 with dementia). Receiver operator characteristic curves were used to examine the ability of AD8 and IQCODE to discriminate between controls and MCI or dementia. Sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, and likelihood ratios were reported.     The creativity of ‘unspecialisation': a contemplative direction for integrative scholarly practice

    Within the context of health and social care education, attempts to define 'scholarship' have increasingly transcended traditional academic conceptions of the term. While acknowledging that many applied disciplines call for a kind of 'actionable knowledge' that is also not separate from its ethical dimensions, engagement in the caring professions in particular provides an interesting exemplar that raises questions about the nature and practice of 'actionable knowledge:' how is such knowledge from different domains (the head, hand and heart) integrated and sustained? This paper is theoretical and wishes to outline some philosophical ideas that may be important when considering the characteristics of the kind of scholarship for caring practices that draw on deep resources for creativity and integration. Firstly, there is an attempt to clarify the nature of scholarly practice by drawing on Aristotle's notion of 'phronesis' (practical wisdom). Secondly, a more meditative approach to the integration of knowledge, action and ethics is highlighted. Finally, its implications for scholarship are introduced, in which scholarly integration may best be served by more contemplative ways of being and thinking. Drawing on Heidegger and Gendlin, we consider the challenges of contemplative thinking for pursuing scholarly practice. We articulate contemplative thinking as an unspecialized mode of being that is given to human beings as an intimate source of creativity. The sense in which unspecialization can be cultivated and practiced is discussed

    Technostress, Coping, and Anxious and Depressive Symptomatology in University Students During the COVID-19 Pandemic

    The COVID-19 pandemic raised many challenges for university staff and students, including the need to work from home, which resulted in a greater reliance on technology. We collected questionnaire data from university students (N = 894) in three European countries: Greece, Italy, and the United Kingdom. Data were collected between 7th April 2020 and 19th June 2020, representing a period covering the first lockdown and university closures in these countries and across Europe generally. We tested the hypotheses that technology-related stressors (techno-overload, work-home conflict, techno-ease, techno-reliability, techno-sociality, and pace of change) would be associated with anxiety and depressive symptoms, and that coping styles (problem-focused, emotion-focused, and avoidance) would mediate these relationships. Results showed significant positive associations between techno-overload, work-home conflict and anxiety and depressive symptoms, and significant negative associations between techno-reliability, techno-ease and anxiety and depressive symptoms. A significant negative association was found between techno-sociality and depressive symptoms but not anxiety symptoms. No evidence was found for an association between pace of change and anxiety or depressive symptoms. Multiple mediation analyses revealed significant direct effects of techno-overload, work-home conflict and techno-ease on anxiety symptoms, and of work-home conflict and techno-ease on depressive symptoms. Work-home conflict had significant indirect effects on anxiety and depressive symptoms through avoidance coping. Techno-overload and techno-ease both had significant indirect effects on anxiety symptoms through problem- and emotion-focused coping. Techno-ease also had a significant indirect effect on depressive symptoms through problem-focused coping. The findings add to the body of evidence on technostress amongst university students and provide knowledge on how technostress translates through coping strategies into anxious and depressive symptoms during the disruption caused by the outbreak of a pandemic disease
