Finding Solutions through Politics: One View from Inside the Timber Wars

    No full text
There are many perspectives of the timber wars, and one perspective that is not frequently documented is that of government bureaucrats – policy makers, regulators, and others who were often caught in the crossfire of opposing sides. This oral history with Dr. Andrea Tuttle is one attempt to describe the Timber Wars from this perspective. On February 25, 2017, I invited Dr. Tuttle to sit down and discuss her history with forest regulation. I asked very few questions and instead listened as she told the history; I ended up with two hours of audio, which I transcribed to over fifteen pages. The following oral history is edited for brevity and flow

Andrea Tuttle works as an advocate for robust forest and climate policies. She participated in the early design of California's climate program and forest protocols which are now a compliance instrument in the cap-and-trade system. She is a former Director of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and now serves on the boards of the Pacific Forest Trust and U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities. Through her career she has been active in California land-use and environmental policy, serving on the state Coastal Commission, the North Coast Regional Water Quality control Board and as a principal consultant in the state Senate. She consults internationally and for the past nine years has attended the UNFCCC climate negotiations as an Observer, especially tracking the REDD+ policies and finance mechanisms to reduce deforestation and degradation in the tropics. She's a Cal Berkeley grad with a B.A. in Biological Sciences and Ph.D. in Environmental Planning, and has lived in Arcata with her husband Don since the 1970's.Lecture delivered at Humboldt State University on February 18, 2016 by Andrea Tuttle. Frank Tuttle lives and writes in the perpetually humid wilderness of North Mississippi. Frank tried to be a proper Southern author and write about pickups and hound dogs, but trolls and magic kept creeping into his stories, so Frank is a fantasy author. Although hounds do make occasional appearances in his fiction. His Markhat series features a hard-boiled, wise-cracking detective in a world where magic works. He also has a Young Adult series called The Paths of Shadow, and has short stories published in numerous magazines

This is a truly collaborative paper, with one of my former senior thesis students (Alex Tuttle \u2708) and one of Mogil\u27s graduate students (Langford) sharing first authorship. Some of the research was carried out in our lab, some was carried out in Mogil\u27s lab at McGill. Illustrating the preparation that my lab provides to prospective research scientists, Tuttle is now a graduate student in Mogil\u27s lab pursuing a PhD in neuroscience, being trained by one of the finest pain labs in the world. --author-supplied descriptio

Digital Tectonics as a Morphogenetic Process

    No full text
    p. 938-948Tectonics is a seminal concept that defines the nature of the relationship between architecture and its structural properties. The changing definition of the symbiotic relationship between structural engineering and architectural design may be considered one of the formative influences on the conceptual evolution of tectonics in different historical periods. Recent developments in the field of morphogenesis, digital media, theories techniques and methods of digital design have contributed a new models of integration between structure, material and form in digital tectonics. The objective of this paper is to propose and define tectonics as a model of morphogenetic process. The paper identifies and presents the manner in which theory and emerging concepts of morphogenesis as well as digital models of design are contributing to this new model. The paper first analyzes the historical evolution of tectonics as a concept and characterizes the emergence of theoretical framework reflected in concepts and terms related to morphogenesis.Oxman, R.
