Per leggere (e capire) Akropolis
The introduction aims to illustrate the extremely rich world of symbols created by Wyspianski in his play Akropolis (1904), whose action is located in Cracow, in the Wawel cathedral, but mixes elements stemming from different cultures, though all inspired by artworks contained in the cathedral. The peculiar syncretism – both Polish-Greek and christian-pagan – and implicit references to the Romantic thinking paradigm are discussed and their possible meanings are proposed. The complex structure of the play - both chiastic-specular and linear-progressive - is detected and explained. The play is seen as an endeavour of reforming Polish culture by assuming all its components in an integrated and vitalistic perspective. This does not prevent the play from presenting a universal accent, calling for an extranational interprepretatio

Dante and Polish Writers. From Romanticism to the Present
Dante and Polish Writers from Romanticism to the Present explores the phenomenon of Polish Danteism from a hermeneutic perspective. The essays shed light on a series of “encounters” of eminent Polish writers with Dante and the Divine Comedy, resulting in original interpretations, creative reworkings, and a wealth of intertextual references testifying to a dialogue that has always been – and still is - alive, not excluding antagonism and bitter controversy. The authors of the essays are all scholars of Polish literature with comparative expertise, teaching in Italian and Polish universities, which ensures a consistently focused point of view on the receptive context and the ways in which it is affected by the confrontation with Dante. The hermeneutic horizon ranges from the Inferno-like reading of the inhuman lands with which history abounds, to the metaphysical yearning underlying Dante’s “poetics of transhumanizing”, to recent perspectives related to the posthuman and storytelling
Inhuman, transhuman, posthuman: An introduction to Polish Danteism over the centuries
The chapter provides an overview of the phenomenon of Polish Danteism from its flowering in Romanticism to Olga Tokarczuk, emphasizing the hermeneutic value of the readings of Dante offered by writers
From parody to polemical pamphlet: Gombrowiczian deformations of Dante
The chapter traces the presence and use of Dante's name and work in Gombrowicz's work, and then focuses on the pages of his October 1966 Diary, later published separately in a scandalous French-Polish booklet (Sur Dante), in which Gombrowicz criticised the first two tercets of Canto III of the Inferno, proposing a supposedly better rewriting of the same. The methodological approach to the text in question is both philological and hermeneutical: which version of the Divine Comedy does Gombrowicz rely on? How does he manipulate Dante's text? And for what purpose? The structure of Gombrowicz's writing seems to contain useful elements to understand the deep reasons behind it. In just a few pages, in a style that mixes philosophical seriousness and iconoclastic provocation, dramatic experience and programmatic immaturity, Harold Bloom's "anxiety of influence" blends with Augustine's reflection on evil and with the age-old debate on theodicy, while pain stands out as the ultimate, ineliminable and unacceptable essence of human life
