SemEval-2020 Task 7: Assessing Humor in Edited News Headlines
This is the task dataset for SemEval-2020 Task 7: Assessing Humor in Edited News Headlines.
The task’s dataset contains news headlines in which short edits were applied to make them funny, and the funniness of these edited headlines was rated using crowdsourcing. This task includes two subtasks, the first of which is to estimate the funniness of headlines on a humor scale in the interval 0-3. The second subtask is to predict, for a pair of edited versions of the same original headline, which is the funnier version.

Adil Baykasoglu and Nabil N.Z. Gindy LOADING FLEXIBLE CELLS: TABU SEARCH BASED SIMULATION OPTIMISATION APPROACH
In this work a tabu search-based "multi-objective simulation optimisation model " is proposed for loading flexible cell production systems. The problem is formally stated as a goal-programming model hybrid in nature. Some objectives and parameters are determined analytically others are determined from the developed simulation model. The model is solved utilising a tabu search algorithm developed by the author. In the developed methodology parts are assigned to the cells to achieve required performance levels. A capabilitybased approach is used to define processing requirements of products and processing capabilities of production resources. Parts are assigned to cells such that load is balanced between cells and individual production resources within the cells, cell interactions are kept to a minimum, required system performance levels satisfied (when feasible). Example application is provided to explain the developed methodology. 1
Além do paradigma (sobre o legado de thomas kuhn), de nabil araújo (rio de janeiro: Eduerj, 2023)
With Além do paradigma (Sobre o legado de Thomas Kuhn), “Beyond the Paradigm (On the legacy of Thomas Kuhn)”, Nabil Araújo undertakes a theoretical contribution about the production of knowledge within the University. “Além” (beyond) here, "beyond the paradigm," provides a triple key for reading. First, it is a study "on the legacy of Thomas Kuhn" and his Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962) in a broad sense, in which the author thinks about the place of the "paradigm" in the conceptual edifice of the historiography of science. In the second sense, "beyond" indicates something of Thomas Kuhn's own position concerning a legacy such as he did not intended it to be his, in his sayings, a legacy arising from the "excessive plasticity" of the word "paradigm." This excessive plasticity, which causes a "loss of control", as Araújo reminds us, however, can be thought of as an surplus-value of the Kuhnian reflection. In this sense, a third "beyond" is performed, produced by the Araújo’s work itself, as he seeks to situate Kuhn's observations towards an opening. What is aimed at is, as the author proposes, "a truly renewed vision of the function of historiography put into play in Structure".Com Além do paradigma (Sobre o legado de Thomas Kuhn), Nabil Araújo empreende uma contribuição teórica sobre a produção de saber no âmbito da Universidade.
Load voltage regulation via transmitter power supply control for wirelessly powered biomedical implants
Wireless power transfer (WPT) via inductive links has been an attractive solution for powering biomedical implants. Due to the nature of the human body (e.g. body movement or changes in the biological environment), however, the transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX) coils involved in WPT are prone to misalignment, causing variations in the coupling factor. The variation in the coupling factor results in variations in the voltage that is delivered to the load on the receiver end. A solution to the problem of load voltage variation is to employ negative feedback on the transmitter end. Towards this goal, a feedback control architecture is proposed for the regulation of the load voltage under coupling variations. It is shown that by controlling the power supply on the transmitter end, through voltage-mode feedback control, the load voltage can be regulated. In the design of the controller, the open-loop system of the power control unit and WPT system have been taken into consideration. Theoretical derivations are presented and the validity of the proposed concept is investigated using simulations.M.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Nabil Mohamma
Adapting authoritarianism: institutions and co-optation in Egypt and Syria
This PhD thesis compares Egypt and Syria’s authoritarian political systems. While the tendency in social science political research treats Egypt and Syria as similarly authoritarian, this research emphasizes differences between the two systems with special reference to institutions and co-optation. Rather than reducibly understanding Egypt and Syria as sharing similar histories, institutional arrangements, or ascribing to the oft-repeated convention that “Syria is Egypt but 10 years behind,” this thesis focuses on how events and individual histories shaped each states current institutional strengthens and weaknesses. Specifically, it explains the how varying institutional politicization or de-politicization affects each state’s capabilities for co-opting elite and non-elite individuals.
Beginning with a theoretical framework that considers the limited utility of democratization and transition theoretical approaches, the work underscores the persistence and durability of authoritarianism. Chapter two details the politicized institutional divergence between Egypt and Syria that began in the 1970s. Chapter three and four examines how institutional politicization or de-politicization affects elite and non-elite individual co-optation in Egypt and Syria. Chapter five discusses the study’s general conclusions and theoretical implications.
This thesis’s argument is that Egypt and Syria co-opt elites and non-elites differently because of the varying degrees of institutional politicization in each governance system. Rather than view one country as more politically developed than the other, this work argues that Syria’s political institutions are more politicized than their Egyptian counterparts. Syria’s political arena is, thus, described as politicized-patrimonialism. Syria’s politicized-patrimonial arena produces uneven co-optation of elites and non-elites as they are diffused through competing institutions. Conversely, the Egyptian political arena remains highly personalized as weak institutions and individuals are manipulated and molded according to the president’s ruling clique. This is referred to as personalized-patrimonialism. As a consequence, Egypt’s political establishment demonstrates more flexibility in ad hoc altering and adapting its arena depending on the emergence of crises.
This study’s theoretical implications suggest that, contrary to modernization and democratization theory’s adage that institutions lead to a political development, politicized institutions within a patrimonial order actually hinder regime adaptation because consensus is harder to achieve and maintain. It is within this context that Egypt’s de-politicized institutional framework advantages its top political elite. In this reading of Egyptian and Syrian politics, Egypt’s personalized political arena is more adaptable than Syria’s. These conclusions do not indicate that political reform is a process underway in either state
New approaches for integrating revenue and supply chain management
Thesis: Ph. D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, Operations Research Center, 2014.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from PDF student-submitted version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 165-172).First, we describe a general framework called online customer selection that describes natural settings where suppliers must actively select which customer requests to serve. Unlike traditional revenue management models that have sunk costs, we assume there are supply chain costs that depend on the demand being served. Specifically, customers arrive in an online manner, each with a set of requirements and associated revenue, and are either accepted or rejected upon arrival. Rejected customers incur a lost-sales cost, while accepted customers are satisfied with minimum possible production cost. The goal of the supplier is to minimize the total cost of lost sales and production. We provide algorithms with strong performance guarantees that are based on new variants of repeated optimization as well as concepts from mechanism design. Second, we study the use of opaque products in a retail setting. A product is said to be opaque when one or more of its attributes are hidden until the transaction is complete. Opaque products have been used in the hotel and airline industry where customers purchase rooms or airfare without a priori knowledge of the brand name. In this work, we propose the use of opaque product selling in the retail industry, where there are nonperishable goods and supply chain costs. We show that a small amount of opaque selling can achieve significant ordering and holding costs savings for the supply chain. Moreover, we describe settings when a stationary opaque selling strategy can outperform a common dynamic pricing strategy. Third, we focus on a variant of the joint replenishment problem, which arises in the previous two parts as well as in inventory management, logistics, and maintenance scheduling. In this problem, there are multiple item types that each has a given time-dependent sequence of demands that need to satisfied. Every time an order of item types is placed, there is an associated fixed setup cost that is submodular in the subset of item types ordered. The overall goal is to minimize the total fixed ordering costs plus inventory holding costs. We provide a variety of approximation algorithms for this problem and some special cases.by Adam Nabil Elmachtoub.Ph. D

Dynamic Environmental Change at the Cusp of the Great Oxidation Event: The Gowganda-Lorrain Formation Transition, Cobalt Basin, Ontario and Quebec
The Huronian Supergroup, an early Paleoproterozoic (ca. 2.45-2.22 Ga) sedimentary succession preserved in Ontario and Quebec, catalogues evidence for the Great Oxidation Event (i.e., the initial rise of oxygen in the atmosphere) through the preservation of redox sensitive minerals in terrestrial deposits: (1) detrital pyrite and uraninite in older strata (evidence of an anoxic atmosphere), and (2) Earth’s earliest red, hematitic, sandstone in younger strata (indicative of a shift to an oxidizing atmosphere). This dissertation comprises three studies from the Cobalt Basin, a northern sub-basin of the greater Huron basin. The first two studies develop depositional models of the northern and easternmost portions of the Cobalt Basin providing details on the glacial to post-glacial paleoenvironments that preserve Earth’s earliest red sandstones. Stratigraphic measurements and correlations reveal that strata are preserved within paleovalleys, interpreted to have developed from glacial excavation as evidenced by basal subglacial deposits. Above these subglacial deposits, strata show a single progradational succession, which captures a transition from glaciomarine to warm and humid fluvial braidplain environments. At the flanks of the paleovalleys, alluvial and/or colluvial deposits occur indicating that terrestrial sedimentation was triggered by enhanced weathering in an unvegetated warm and humid setting due to topographic variations. The successions occur at proximal limits of a passive margin and indicate that progradation was influenced by relative sea-level fall linked to glacio-isostatic uplift. The third study investigates the petrogenesis of reddened sandstone of the aforementioned braidplain deposits. Petrography reveals single-grain rims of pigmentary hematite dust on detrital quartz that are encased by quartz overgrowth cement. This encapsulates evidence that reddening is a syn-sedimentary or early diagenetic feature, formed from widespread oxidizing meteoric waters in a terrestrial setting under an oxygenated atmosphere, prior to burial and lithification of the fluvial deposits. Reddening likely happened close to 2.31 Ga, providing an approximate age for the initiation of oxidative weathering in a terrestrial setting, triggering key feedbacks in nutrient cycling that possibly thrusted Earth’s atmosphere into a stable oxidizing state
