Crossing the IJ
This research is aimed to explore the potential of creating a realistic design for a bridge over the IJ. Analysis and literature studies were done both in order to determine the challenges proposed by preconditions on site and the strategies and resources needed in order to answer those challenges. In using a strategy where two bridges divide the traffic load over the area, the connection between the Westerdoksdijk and Overhoeks had proven to show the most potential for current and future use. Because of the need for an opening and the preference not to create a visual obstruction over the water, a cable stayed system was used to support the bridge. Creating a bridge that answers to the challenges and allows for the residents of Amsterdam to cross the IJ without closing it down for the public.Building TechnologyArchitecture and The Built Environmen
Hydraulic EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience
Hybrid BuildingArchitectureArchitectur
“Unexpected” domesticity: Housing design of OMA’s IJ-plein masterplan project in Amsterdam
This article focuses on the OMA’s IJ-plein master plan located on a former shipping wharf in Amsterdam North (1980-1988). Particularly in the domesticity of the different dwellings, which were designed by six other offices, including the one by Koolhaas, and were 100% for social housing. This project is considered one of the turning points of what finally culminated in the 1990s’ Super Dutch. Several authors have studied this project, particularly Bernard Leupen, author of the book “IJ-Plein. Een speurotcht naar niewusw compositiorische mideelen” [IJ-Plein. A search for new compositional idea] (010, 1989). However, as Leupen himself pointed out, his study lacks specific issues, such as evaluating dwellings and their use. It was published immediately after the project ended. More recently, other authors have studied the project, such as Christophe Van Gerrewey in “A Weissenhofsiedlung for Amsterdam” (Anyone, 2018) or Lara Schrijver in “Stubborn Modernity, IJ-plein Amsterdam” (OASE, 2015). While these are significant contributions, they do not delve into the design of the dwellings, developing questions related to commissioning, process, or precedents. This study offers a new analysis of the project with an emphasis on housing design: not only on their novel interpretation of modern tradition at the time of their conception, but on the inherent and unexpected domesticity of their typological proposals today.Space & Typ
Aggregation and Other Biases in the Calculation of Consumer Elasticities for Models of Arbitrary Rank
Consumer-related policy decisions often require analysis of aggregate responses or mean elasticities. However, in practice these mean elasticities are seldom used. Mean elasticities can be approximated using aggregate data, but that introduces aggregation bias for full and compensated price elasticities, though interestingly not for expenditure elasticities. The biases corresponding to incorrect approximations of mean elasticities depend on the type of data (micro or aggregate), the type and rank of the model, and generalized measures of income inequality. These biases are distinct from the biases (already noted in the literature) when using aggregate data to estimate micro elasticites at mean income.Aggregate price and expenditure elasticities, aggregation bias, consumer demand, generalized measures of income inequality, income distribution
One small span: Leaping the IJ
Over the last decades Amsterdam has grown exponentially north of the IJ, and this trend is expected to continue. The number of commuters across the river is expected to increase, but there is currently no fixed connection for cyclists or pedestrians, which use ponds. The municipality has proposed a bridge across the IJ between the Hamerkwartier and Java Island areas. With a large required heights, two movable bridge parts and very little space, this is a complicated case, both on urban design and technical level. A solution was found in a cable stayed bridge with split bridge decks. This complex construction required additional stabilizing elements and supports, but did fulfill the requirements. The end result of this study serves as an indication that the construction of a bridge on this location is possible and can lead to satisfying results, but in this complex case, simplicity as a starting requirement will probably lead to more pleasing design.Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences | Building Technology | Sustainable Desig

I ,
Dear Dillon:
I
Thank you for your letter of the eighth. Both it and its attachnaent were more than interesting. Of course, from past conversations 1 was sure that in principle you agreed with the proposals for defense moderniza¬ tion. In turn I want to express my agreement most enthusiastically with the paragraph in which you com¬ ment on the sources of the opposition to the reorganiza¬ tion plan.
1 ¦ J'
Of all these sources probably none is naore vocal than the interested labor and naanagenaent groups. In a note from Jack McCloy he made this sanae observation.
I
Now, turning to the naessage you sent to Senator Johnson, I find myself again in your corner. If I had to express any critical comment whatsoever, it would be merely that you did not make even more emphatic the beliefs and con¬ victions you express on the last page of your letter.
I note that you expect to be in Washington during the final week of this month. K you have the opportunity to drop in to the White House, please naake sure you come to see me.

The Shared Platform: Cohabitation and sharing on the IJ
As the predictions of the future suggest, in the horizon of 2050 the model of the sharing economy will be extensively established. This model will affect not only the way we inhabit and use possessions but also space. The increasing phenomena such as Airbnb, pose the question of whether the lifestyle of 2050 will lead to a new typology of the house: The house as a Shared Platform. In this platform-model, people will live as a community and they will use space as a resource, together with other possessions such as the bike or the boat–since water mobility will be extensively used on the IJ river. Cohabitation will be the strategy to cope with the changing socio-economic conditions; community and space as resources and means of self-sufficiency. Zaanstad, a former industrial area which will be fully redeveloped in 2050 into a dense working and living district, will be the ideal place for such an experimentation; the perfect location for the sharing community to be established and grow on the river. Since most of the land will be already occupied by 2050, water will be the new plot for development. The Shared Platform will initiate this new strategy of building on the water that relates to the strong bond of Amsterdam with the river. Introducing new urban relationships with its surroundings, the Platform will trigger urban sprawl on the IJ. People will travel and spend the night in the Shared Platform to experience this cohabitation community. They will get to know the habits and lifestyle of the real locals of the place. The unique location on the banks of the IJ and the water mobility network of ferries and water-taxis will strengthen the experience. The Shared Platform will consist a prototype for the new lifestyle.Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences | Complex Project
