    Polymer multimode waveguide optical and electronic PCB manufacturing

    The paper describes the research in the £1.3 million IeMRC Integrated Optical and Electronic Interconnect PCB Manufacturing (OPCB) Flagship Project in which 8 companies and 3 universities carry out collaborative research and which was formed and is technically led by the author. The consortium’s research is aimed at investigating a range of fabrication techniques, some established and some novel, for fabricating polymer multimode waveguides from several polymers, some formulations of which are being developed within the project. The challenge is to develop low cost waveguide manufacturing techniques compatible with commercial PCB manufacturing and to reduce their alignment cost. The project aims to take the first steps in making this hybrid optical waveguide and electrical copper track printed circuit board disruptive technology widely available by establishing and incorporating waveguide design rules into commercial PCB layout software and transferring the technology for fabricating such boards to a commercial PCB manufacturer. To focus the research the project is designing an optical waveguide backplane to tight realistic constraints, using commercial layout software with the new optical design rules, for a demonstrator into which 4 daughter cards are plugged, each carrying an aggregate of 80 Gb/s data so that each waveguide carries 10 Gb/s

    AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to use geometric modules and path matrix morphisms of construct a continuously controlled K-theory with variable coefficients. The theory constructed here can be thought of as a “pushout” of the boundedly controlled K-theory with variable coefficients constructed in D.R. Anderson, H.J. Munkholm (Geometric modules and algebraic K-Homology theory, K-Theory 3 (1990) 561–602) and the continuously controlled K-theory with constant coefficients constructed in D.R. Anderson, F.X. Connolly, S. Ferry, E.K. Pedersen (Algebraic K-theory with continuous control at infinity, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 94 (1994) 25–47) over the boundedly controlled K-theory with constant coefficients constructed (E.K. Pedersen, C. Weibel, K-Theory Homology of Spaces, Lecture Notes in Mathematics, vol. 1370, Springer, Berlin, New York, 1989, pp. 346–361). This theory should be directly and easily applicable in the study of stratified spaces. This paper also relates the theory constructed here to the controlled K-theory constructed in D.R. Anderson, F.X. Connolly, H.J. Munkholm (A comparison of continuously controlled and controlled K-theory, Topology Appl. 71 (1996) 9–46) as an inverse limit of ε-controlled K-groups and shows that, under suitable conditions, the controlled K-theory of D.R.     AbstractThe binding number of a graph G, bind(G), is defined; some examples of its calculation are given, and some upper bounds for it are proved. It is then proved that, if bind(G) ≥ c, then G contains at least |G| c(c + 1) disjoint edges if 0 ≤ c ≤ 12, at least | G | (3c − 2)3c − 2(c − 1)c disjoint edges if 1 ≤ c ≤ 43, a Hamiltonian circuit if c ≥ 32, and a circuit of length at least 3(| G | −1)(c − 1)c if 1 < c ≤ 32 and G is not one of two specified exceptional graphs. Each of these results is best possible.The Anderson number of a graph is defined. The Anderson numbers of a few very simple graphs are determined; and some rather weak bounds are obtained, and some conjectures made, on the Anderson numbers of graphs in general

    The aim of this thesis is to investigate the use of a bifilar pendulum for determining the moments of inertia of the TU Delft solar boat and to quantitatively predict the estimates. In the first part, several methods are discussed which can be applied in deriving the equations of motion of the pendulum. A new method, Kane's method, will be introduced. In the second part, this method will be used to derive the actual equations of motion. These equations are linearized around of the the pendulum's stationary positions to obtain expressions which link the moment of inertia about an axis to the period of oscillation of the pendulum about that axis. These equations are subsequently applied to the solar boat to derive estimates for the moments of inertia about the principle axis of the boat. The results of this thesis considers three different configurations of the bifilar pendulum with the solar boat suspended. One of these configurations results in the most accurate estimates for the moments of inertia, however, these have not been quantitatively predicted.     Nuclear waste disposal in subseabed geologic formatons: the Seabed Disposal Program

    The goal of the Seabed Disposal Program is to assess the technical and environmental feasibility of using geologic formations under the sea floor for the disposal of processed high-level radioactive wastes or repackaged spent reactor fuel. Studies are focused on the abyssal hill regions of the sea floors in the middle of tectonic plates and under massive surface current gyres. The red-clay sediments here are from 50 to 100 meters thick, are continuously depositional (without periods of erosion), and have been geologically and climatologically stable for millions of years. Mineral deposits and biological activity are minimal, and bottom currents are weak and variable. Five years of research have revealed no technological reason why nuclear waste disposal in these areas would be impractical. However, scientific assessment is not complete. Also, legal political, and sociological factors may well become the governing elements in such use of international waters. These factors are being examined as part of the work of the Seabed Working Group, an international adjunct of the Seabed Program, with members from France, England, Japan, Canada, and the United States
