The vanishing author in computer-generated works: a critical analysis of recent Australian case law
Abstract
The use of software is ubiquitous in the creation of many copyright works, yet the requirement in copyright law that every work have a human author who engages in independent intellectual effort means that its use may prevent copyright subsistence. Several recent Australian cases have refocused attention on authorship as an essential criterion of copyright subsistence, and these cases suggest that much computer-produced output may be authorless and thus lack copyright protection. This article, the first in a two-part series, analyses how each case deals with the question of authorship of computer-produced works and why the use of software diminishes copyright protection for a significant number of computer-generated works. The article critiques the application of conventional notions of human authorship developed in the pre-computer age to modern productions and suggests alternative approaches to authorship that satisfy both the major objectives of copyright policy and the need to adapt to the computer age. The article argues that, without a broader judicial approach to authorship of computer-generated works, Parliament must remedy the lacuna in protection for these ‘authorless’ works. Possible solutions for reform are suggested. In a forthcoming article, the author comprehensively examines those reform proposals

2015:13Svend Bögh-Andersen was a Danish architect who held the position as city architect in the town Laholm in Halland, south Sweden. Along with many other Danish architects he relocated to Sweden due to a lack of available architectural positions in his native Denmark post World War II. He held the position as city architect between 1951 and 1974 and after that he continued to work with his own firm Arkitektura AB until his death in 1984. In 2011, his personal residence, built in the mid 1950’s, was deemed to be a a building of special architectural or historical interest by the county administrative board, Länsstyrelsen, for Halland. His home, along with many other buildings in Laholm, are excellent examples of architecture in the style of modernism and functionalism. Bögh-Andersen designed new, and also restored, multiple buildings in Sweden. Most of them were in Laholm and it is this specific geographical which I have chosen to focus my attention upon. The purpose of this paper is to examine Svend Bögh-Andersen and his buildings and to provide the reader with both visual and textual examples which fully illustrate his work

Ab initio quantum-enhanced optical phase estimation using real-time feedback control
Optical phase estimation is a vital measurement strategy that is used to perform accurate measurements of various physical quantities including length, velocity and displacements(1,2). The precision of such measurements can be greatly enhanced by the use of entangled or squeezed states of light as demonstrated in a variety of different optical systems(3-8). Most of these accounts, however, deal with the measurement of a very small shift of an already known phase, which is in stark contrast to ab initio phase estimation where the initial phase is unknown(9-12). Here, we report on the realization of a quantum-enhanced and fully deterministic ab initio phase estimation protocol based on real-time feedback control. Using robust squeezed states of light combined with a real-time Bayesian adaptive estimation algorithm, we demonstrate deterministic phase estimation with a precision beyond the quantum shot noise limit. The demonstrated protocol opens up new opportunities for quantum microscopy, quantum metrology and quantum information processing
Laptop-thighs - laptop-induced erythema ab igne.
A 15-year-old boy presented with a livedo reticulares-like eruption on both thighs, but more pronounced on the left. The history revealed the diagnosis: ''Laptop-thighs'' i.e. laptop-induced erythema ab igne, the result of months of daily use of the laptop while placed on the thighs. Erythema ab igne is traditionally a disease of the elderly, caused by overuse of heat sources on tender backs etc. The recent popularity of laptop computers and other electronics emitting strong heat has made erythema ab igne a problem also in younger generations.
Solving the Structure of the Phases in the Al-Mg-Si Alloy System with the Help of Ab Initio Modelling
ABSTRACTThe Al-Mg-Si (6xxx-series) alloy system is a precipitation hardened alloy gaining much of its strength from precipitate phases acting as pinning centers for dislocation movement. Five years ago, Zandbergen, Andersen and coworkers identified the crystallography of the so-called β″ phase, one of the main hardening phases, using solely electron microscopy techniques [1]. Later, several other phases have been identified using high resolution microscopy. To solve the crystallography of these phases and to get an increased understanding of the electronic structure and bonding, ab initio modeling has proven to be a valuable tool. We present results from calculations on two recently discovered phases and show how ab initio modeling can give insight into the bonding trends and electronic structure of the phases in this alloy system.</jats:p
Normal and superconducting state properties of B-doped diamond from first-principles
In this paper we give a theoretical description of the superconducting
and normal-state properties of hole-doped diamond based on ab initio
calculations. Our aim is to provide a useful reference to compare the
theoretical predictions with the experimental data. We also discuss the
advantages and drawbacks of the virtual crystal approximation (VCA),
which we adopted to model the boron doping, comparing our results with
supercell calculations. (c) 2006 NIMS and Elsevier Ltd. All rights
