    Scheduling participants of Assessment Centres

    Assessment Centres are used as a tool for psychologists and coaches to ob- serve a number of dimensions in a person's behaviour and test his/her potential within a number of chosen focus areas. This is done in an intense course, with a number of dierent exercises which expose each participant's ability level in the chosen focus areas. The participants are observed by assessors with the purpose of gathering material for reaching a conclusion on each participant's personal pro le. We consider the particular case that arises at the company Human Equity (www.humanequity.dk), where Assessment Centres usually last two days and involve 3-6 psychologists or trained coaches as assessors. An entire course is composed of a number of rounds, with each round having its individual duration. In each round, the participants are divided into a number of groups with prespeci ed pairing of group sizes and assessors. The scheduling problem amounts to determining the allocation of participants to groups in each round. We have developed a model and solution approach for this particular scheduling problem, which may be viewed as a rather extensive generalization of the Social Golfer Problem.No keywords;

    The Pyramidal Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem

    This paper introduces the Pyramidal Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (PCVRP) as a restricted version of the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP). In the PCVRP each route is required to be pyramidal in a sense generalized from the Pyramidal Traveling Salesman Problem (PTSP). A pyramidal route is de ned as a route on which the vehicle rst visits customers in increasing order of customer index, and on the remaining part of the route visits customers in decreasing order of customer index. Provided that customers are indexed in nondecreasing order of distance from the depot, the shape of a pyramidal route is such that its traversal can be divided in two parts, where on the rst part of the route, customers are visited in nondecreasing distance from the depot, and on the remaining part of the route, customers are visited in nonincreasing distance from the depot. Such a route shape is indeed found in many optimal solutions to CVRP instances. An optimal solution to the PCVRP may therefore be useful in itself as a heuristic solution to the CVRP. Further, an attempt can be made to nd an even better CVRP solution by solving a TSP, possibly leading to a non-pyramidal route, for each of the routes in the PCVRP solution. This paper develops an exact branch-and-cut-and-price (BCP) algorithm for the PCVRP. At the pricing stage, elementary routes can be computed in pseudo-polynomial time in the PCVRP, unlike in the CVRP. We have therefore implemented pricing algorithms that generate only elementary routes. Computational results suggest that PCVRP solutions are highly useful for obtaining near-optimal solutions to the CVRP.     Semantic model-driven development of web service architectures.

    Building service-based architectures has become a major area of interest since the advent of Web services. Modelling these architectures is a central activity. Model-driven development is a recent approach to developing software systems based on the idea of making models the central artefacts for design representation, analysis, and code generation. We propose an ontology-based engineering methodology for semantic model-driven composition and transformation of Web service architectures. Ontology technology as a logic-based knowledge representation and reasoning framework can provide answers to the needs of sharable and reusable semantic models and descriptions needed for service engineering. Based on modelling, composition and code generation techniques for service architectures, our approach provides a methodological framework for ontology-based semantic service architecture

    p53-Responsive MicroRNAs 192 and 215 Are Capable of Inducing Cell Cycle Arrest

    microRNAs provide a novel layer of regulation for gene expression by interfering with the stability and/or translation of specific target mRNAs. Overall levels of microRNTAs are frequently down-regulated in cancer cells, and reducing general microRNA processing increases cancerogenesis in transgenic models, suggesting that at least some microRNAs might act as effectors in tumor suppression. Accordingly, the tumor suppressor p53 up-regulates miR-34a, a microR-NtA that contributes to apoptosis and acute senescence. Here, we used array hybridization to rind that p53 induces two additional, mutually related clusters of microRNAs, leading to the up-regulation of miR-192, miR-194, and miR-215. The same microRNAs were detected at high levels in normal colon tissue but were severely reduced in many colon cancer samples. On the other hand, miR-192 and its cousin miR-215 can each contribute to enhanced CDKN1A/p21 levels, colony suppression, cell cycle arrest, and cell detachment from a solid support. These effects were partially dependent on the presence of wild-type p53. Antagonizing endogenous miR-192 attenuated 5-fluorouracil-induced accumulation of p21. Hence, miR-192 and miR-215 can act as effectors as well as regulators of p53; they seem to suppress cancerogenesis through p21 accumulation and cell cycle arrest.     Radioluminescence-based fibre-optic dosimeters in radiotherapy:a review

    Since their conception in the early 1990s, radioluminescence-based fibre-optic dosimeters (FODs) have attracted great interest for dosimetric applications in radiotherapy (RT). Over the years, many scintillating materials, both organic and inorganic, have been developed and tested by multiple research groups around the world. In parallel, reliable techniques for removing or subtracting the stem effect, one of the main drawbacks of FODs, have been proposed in the literature. To date, several prototype systems are widespread, some of which prove to be viable commercial solutions. This review aims to trace the efforts over the years that have enabled FODs to become reliable tools for dosimetry in the current RT procedures and promising options for future scenarios. After a first section devoted to a thorough discussion of the stem effect issue, the use of FODs in various applications of interest to RT, primarily small-field dosimetry and in vivo dosimetry, are addressed. Their use both in external beam RT, including hadrontherapy, and in brachytherapy are considered. A special focus is given to the peculiarities of MRI LINAC dosimetry and the contributions of FODs in this context. Finally, the state of the art concerning the development and characterization of FODs for monitoring ultra-high dose rate radiation beams, typical of FLASH therapy and microbeam RT are presented, highlighting the challenges still open.</p

    Is There an Opportunity to Establish the Social-Capitalism in the Post Socialist Transition?

    Recently Claus Offe has put the question that concerns the fate of the European model of social capitalism: Can the model of social capitalism survive the European integration in the context of certain contemporary tendencies? Offe has presupposed that the mentioned model is challenged by the processes of globalization and the integration of the post socialist countries into the European Union. The working hypothesis of the article is that there is an opportunity to provide a coherent answer to this question. The article consists of two parts. In the first part the author starts with the Polanyis socio-economic theory and emphasises the importance of this approach for the analysing of the tendencies of capitalism in Western Europe and in the post socialist countries. The author argues that with the Polanyis theory we are able to explicate the forms of the embedded liberalism in Western Europe after 1945 and the orientation of non-embedded neo-liberalism and the functioning of the workfare state after the crisis of the Keynesian welfare state. Despite the tendencies of the globalisation projected by neo-liberalism, the central element of the social capitalism, namely, the welfare state, remains with the dimensions of the continuity. In the next part the author points out that there is an asymmetrical structure between the Western-Europe and non-Western part of Europe concerning the socialisation of capitalism. The neoliberalisation in accordance with the model of the transfer of ideal-type of capitalism is more strongly implemented in the countries of transition. In addition, the mentioned theoretical approach provides opportunities to explain the failures of implementing of neo-liberalism in the post socialist countries.     Flexicurity – Labour Market Performance in Denmark

    Unemployment is at a low and stable level in Denmark. This achievement is often attributed to the so-called flexicurity model combining flexible hiring and firing rules for employers with income security for employees. Whatever virtues this model may have, a low and stable unemployment rate is not automatically among them since the basic flexicurity properties were also in place during the 1970s and 1980s where high and persistent unemployment was prevalent. Labour market performance has changed due to a series of reforms during the 1990s, the main thrust of which were a shift from a passive focus of labour market policies to a more active focus on job search and employment. The policy tightened eligibility for unemployment benefits and their duration as well as introduced workfare elements into unemployment insurance and social policies in general. Thereby policy makers attempted to strengthen the incentive structure without taking resort to general benefit reductions. We argue that the workfare policies have played an important role running primarily via motivation/threat and wage effects. However, active labour market policies are resource demanding, and although the workfare reforms have improved cost effectiveness, there is still an issue as to whether the resources going into active labour market policies are used efficiently.

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) are activators of this pathway and are elevated in the serum of patients with psoriasis compared with healthy controls. Studies on COS-7 cell cultures have shown that protein phosphatase 2C&delta; (PP2C&delta;) decreases the activity of RSK2 following EGF stimulation. We therefore hypothesize that PP2C&delta; regulates RSK2 activity in psoriasis. Methods: In paired biopsies from nonlesional (NL) and lesional (L) skins, we analyzed the level of RSK1, 2 phosphorylation and the expression of PP2C&delta; isoforms, integrin-linked kinase-associated serine/threonine phosphatase (ILKAP) and wild-type p53-induced phosphatase 1 (Wip1) by Western blotting, immunofluorescence and coimmunoprecipitation with monoclonal antibody for RSK2. The induction of Wip1 by MIF or EGF was studied in cultured normal human keratinocytes.Results: The protein level of RSK1, 2 phosphorylated at T573/T577 was significantly increased in L compared with NL psoriatic skin, while phosphorylation at S380/S386 was reduced in L compared with NL psoriatic skin when assayed by Western blotting and immunofluorescence microscopy. ILKAP expression was significantly higher in L than in NL skin, whereas Wip1 was expressed in similar amounts but showed increased coimmunoprecipitation with RSK2 in L compared with NL psoriatic skin. In cultured normal human keratinocytes stimulated with MIF, Wip1 phosphorylation and Wip1 expression were increased after 24 hours, but not when costimulated with dimethyl fumarate (DMF). The increased coimmunoprecipitation of Wip1 with RSK2 was significantly induced by EGF or MIF activation at 24 hours and could be significantly inhibited by DMF or the ERK1/2 inhibitor PD98059. Conclusion: The complex formation of Wip1 with RSK2 indicates a direct interaction reducing P-RSK2 (S386) activation in L skin and indicates that Wip1 has a role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis.     Household Net Wealth: An International Comparison

    Household saving can be measured as either the difference between the flows of current income and expenditure, or through households’ balance sheets as changes in the stocks of accumulated net wealth. This paper examines household saving in New Zealand and other OECD countries, with particular focus on the stock of net wealth. The ratio of real assets to disposable income in New Zealand is close to OECD levels. However, household financial net wealth as a proportion of disposable income has been falling in New Zealand since the late 1980s, whereas it has been rising in other OECD countries. As a result, housing assets in New Zealand have become an increasing share of households' wealth portfolios. The implied savings rate from households’ balance sheets is significantly higher than the flow measure. Moreover, it follows the business cycle more closely, consistent with consumption smoothing behaviour by households.Household net wealth, saving, financial deregulation
