    Characterization of pearls by X-ray phase contrast imaging with a grating interferometer

    AbstractIn this study, X-ray phase contrast imaging with a grating interferometer is applied on pearls for the first time in order to distinguish natural pearls from cultured pearls. Traditionally, this separation is mainly based on X-ray radiography. In order to visualize the internal structure of pearls we used a custom-made grating interferometer setup and performed measurements on three different pearl products, a natural pearl, a beaded cultured pearl and a beadless cultured pearl. To enhance the visibility of the internal pearl structures, we applied a high-pass filter in order to better conclude on the applicability of this technique to the separation of natural and cultured pearls. The study shows that it is possible to visualize internal pearl structures using distinctly shorter exposure times compared to traditional X-ray radiography and that X-ray phase contrast imaging is a promising complementary method for pearl analysis

    In-operando dynamic visualization of flow through porous preforms based on X-ray phase contrast imaging

    Direct visualization is often sought to elucidate flow patterns and validate models to predict the filling kinetics during processes whereby a liquid resin infiltrates a textile porous preform. Here, X-ray phase contrast interferometry is evaluated to image in-operando constant flow rate impregnation experiments of a model fluid into glass, carbon and flax fabrics and a 3D printed structure. A methodology is presented to build the dynamic saturation curve based on image analysis of the dark field images, in which the pixel intensity values are transformed into saturation level versus position and time. The results prove the suitability of this technique to observe the progressive saturation averaged through the thickness of translucent and non-translucent preforms. The porosity network formed by the layers of fabric, the refractive properties of the material, the fabric geometry and its position relative to the X-ray setup are reported to be the main parameters affecting image contrast.</p

    Flipping the Coin: Towards a Double-Faced Approach to Teaching Black Literature in Secondary English Classrooms

    Critiquing two approaches that English teachers use to teach Black, or African-American, literature in the secondary classroom—one that centralizes races and the other that ignores it—this article proposes a hybrid approach that combines both. This double-faced approach recognizes the culturally specific themes that give the text and the Black author their unique voice while also recognizing commonalities that bridge the text to others—despite the race of the authors. To demonstrate the feasibility of the double-faced approach, the article concludes with an examination of three texts through the lens of this “race both matters and doesn’t matter” perspective

    Radical research as research at the roots: Practitioner self-image, public relations and ethics

    Semantically, radical derives from ‘radix’, the Latin for root. This paper argues that little public relations research goes back to the roots of actual practice and addresses this neglect through a project focusing on practitioner accounts of their work. When considering public relations ethics, practitioner self-images and cultural values become an essential research component. In addressing this neglected area of research, this paper examines the subjective perceptions of public relations practitioners regarding their role, commitments, and responsibilities within the framework of their specific culture and national history. In considering practitioner testimonials about professional integrity, briefs, and goals, especially as members of the society and nation to which they belong, the paper engages with ethical aspects of the practice from a cultural perspective that assumes different cultures can have different ethical expectations. In revealing the impact of features that are often ‘taken for granted’ in one country, the paper uses the example of four generations of practitioners who served one major institution in Israel to suggest how similar research at the professional roots in other nations might enable knowledge of international similarities and difference in relation to ethics in action

    Title: High Temperature Oxidation Kinetics of a Zr-21/2 w/o Nb Alloy, Author: Vincent F. Urbanic, Location: ThodeAn investigation is reported on the oxidation kinetics of a Zr-21/2 w/o Nb alloy in the temperature range 650° - 1000°C in pure oxygen atmospheres. Weight gain data is presented for rectangular plate specimens in the range 650° - 991°C. The kinetics were determined continuously using thermogravimetric techniques and may be represented by a parabolic relationship followed by essentially linear kinetics over the range 650° - 885°C, while over the range 937°- 991°C, parabolic kinetics is followed by a breakaway transition to an increasing reaction rate. In the low temperature range the parabolic rate constant has been calculated to be k = 20.8 exp (-38026/RT) and in the high temperature range kp = 0.22 exp (-30054/RT). The latter part of the investigation was focused on the oxidation of Zr-21/2 w/o Nb at 1000°C in pure oxygen for periods extending to 23 hours. The morphological development of the oxide scale and metal substrate during parabolic oxidation was investigated and is supported by kinetic, X-ray, electron micro-probe and metallographic observations. Spherical specimens were used to minimize edge effects and hence extend the period of parabolic behaviour. The observed microstructures are discussed with reference to the Zr-Nb-0 phase diagram. We perform a Bayesian search of the main GALPROP parameters, using the MultiNest nested sampling algorithm, augmented by the BAMBI neural network machine-learning package. This is the first study to separate out low-mass isotopes (p, pˉ\bar{p}, and He) from the usual light elements (Be, B, C, N, and O). We find that the propagation parameters that best-fit p,pˉp,\bar{p}, and He data are significantly different from those that fit light elements, including the B/C and 10Be/9Be secondary-to-primary ratios normally used to calibrate propagation parameters. This suggests that each set of species is probing a very different interstellar medium, and that the standard approach of calibrating propagation parameters using B/C can lead to incorrect results. We present posterior distributions and best-fit parameters for propagation of both sets of nuclei, as well as for the injection abundances of elements from H to Si. The input GALDEF files with these new parameters will be included in an upcoming public GALPROP update

Ray Peck, and Vincent Starrett. There are also three letters by his wife, Charmian Kittredge London, to poet John Myers O'Hara, as well as materials documenting William Manning Morgan's collection of Jack London materials. This collection was digitized as part of Project REVEAL (Read and View English & American Literature)

    The television work of Alfred Hitchcock

    The thesis uses close textual analysis to study and evaluate the television work of Alfred Hitchcock. The corpus consists of the twenty shows personally directed by Hitchcock, including his appearances before and after those shows. In response to most previous writing, which tends to compare the programmes with Hitchcock’s films (often unfairly) the thesis emphasises them as products of television. Programmes are evaluated on the basis of their perceived success as television- if they harness conditions related to television production and integrate them with narrative themes or to create meaning. Hitchcock is considered to be the major creative force in each programme. Chapter One provides a variety of important contexts including a brief history of US television of the 1950s, key literature on Hitchcock and analyses of contemporaneous programmes not directed by Hitchcock. The textual analysis chapters (2-8) consider aesthetic or thematic programme aspects. Chapter Two studies the various roles played by Hitchcock’s appearances as series host. Chapter Three considers the impact of censorship on programmes frequently dealing with murder, violence and insanity. Chapter Four analyses Hitchcock’s implementation of varieties of voice-over narration, a common device in short dramatic forms. Chapter Five studies Hitchcock’s use of point-of-view shots, particularly in relation to their role in the delivery of the narrative twist. Chapter Six considers the key Hitchcock theme of detachment from the world. Chapter Seven looks at moments from the programmes which demonstrate how aesthetic is influenced by television production conditions. Hitchcock created a number of television masterpieces. His achievements in television are in many ways comparable in quality and consistency to his theatrical films. Even when considered in the context of other 1950s US anthology dramas, the Hitchcock-directed programmes are superior on many levels. Elements of his film style were highly suited to television production. Many of his greatest achievements embrace and harness television production conditions in their presentation strategies to create an integration of style and meaning
