    The Role of Gopher Tortoise Burrows (Gopherus polyphemus) in Shaping Herpetofaunal Diversity in the Sandhills of Southeast Georgia

    Author\u27s abstract: Gopher Tortoises (Gopherus polyphemus) are known to have large numbers of invertebrate and vertebrate species associated with their burrows. I compared herpetofaunal species diversity and richness at Gopher Tortoise burrows and random points not near burrows on a sandhill in Southeast Georgia. I also compared habitat structure between burrows and random arrays. Trapping took place from March 1, 2007 to August 30, 2007. Species richness for all months combined was significantly higher at Gopher Tortoise burrows than random arrays (Random = 3.60 ± 0.43, Burrow = 5.20 ± 0.57). Species diversity was not significantly different between burrow and random arrays; however, there was a trend showing higher diversity at burrows (Random = 0.67 ± 0.08, Burrow = 0.78 ± 0.06). Species diversity and richness were analyzed separately for each month. Species diversity and richness did not differ between months (March August) or between arrays. Percent canopy cover and plant species richness were significantly lower at Gopher Tortoise burrows, and there was a trend towards more ground cover at burrows as well. The results of this study show that species may take refuge in the burrow of the Gopher Tortoise, especially when temperatures are relatively low. This study has provided some evidence to support the status of the Gopher Tortoise as a keystone species in sandhill habitats

    Drivers of burrow symbiont distribution in a softsediment system: host abundance or burrow trophic environment?

    The Langebaan Lagoon sandflats are dominated by the burrowing activities of thalassinid shrimps. Their burrows are home to various burrow symbionts including a commensal shrimp (Betaeus jucundus), a six-legged crab (Spiroplax spiralis) and a scaleworm (Antinoe lactea). Little work has been conducted on these burrow symbionts, and the mechanisms influencing their abundance and distribution are unknown. To test whether host abundance or the burrow trophic environment (i.e. food availability) is the dominant force shaping patterns of burrow symbiont distribution, samples of host and symbiont abundances as well as chlorophyll-a and extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) measurements were taken from three sites in Langebaan Lagoon over spring and autumn. Clear signals emerged in contradiction of the hypothesis that burrow symbiont abundances peak in areas associated with high abundances of hosts. Host abundances peaked at Bottelary (10.18 counts/site ± 1.02 SE), a site where recreational activities and thalassinid shrimp bait collection are prohibited. In contrast, peak B. jucundus abundance (6.56 counts/site ± 0.37 SE) occurred at Oesterval during September – the muddy sediment of the site resulted in high sedimentary food retention and the September spring phytoplankton bloom resulted in peak chlorophylla (234.12 mg chl-a/g sediment ± 42.74 SE) and EPS (0.13 mg EPS/g sediment ± 0.008 SE) concentrations. Regression analyses confirmed that food availability was the best explanation of the patterns observed in B. jucundus distributions, over and above that of host distributions. S. spiralis and A. lactea did not show this pattern, the result of the low counts of these species in the collected samples or their reliance on food sources different to those depended on by B. jucundus. These results are of consequence in changing the way we think about symbiont distributions relative to that of the hosts, in that the two may not be linked directly, but rather influenced by larger scale trophic changes such as the availability of food within the burrow

    An experimental procedure to study the impact of animal burrows on existing levee structures

    Animal burrows have been reported to cause extensive damage to existing levees and other earthen structures in different parts of the world. In this study a centrifuge model that has been designed to investigate the impact of animal burrows on the performance of an existing earthen structure is described. The proposed methodology simulates animal burrows in an earthen structure by introducing cylindricalshaped openings inside a pre-designed model. A homogenous levee with 1:1 side slopes and a horizontal toe drain was chosen for this preliminary investigation. The steps taken to construct the model and the effect of the adopted burrow simulation technique on the model performance are discussed. Crest settlement was measured before and after the burrow introduction and during the increase in water level to failure. Conclusions regarding the adequacy of the adopted technique are made

    Many-electron theory of resonant charge transfer: Role of surface states in He and He+ scattering off Si(100)

    A many-electron theory of resonant charge transfer, originally formulated for the scattering of an atom with an empty valence orbital from a surface, is extended to treat the case where the valence orbital is initially occupied by one or two electrons. The scattering of He and He+ from the Si(001) surface is investigated. The interaction is assumed to be with the narrow band of surface states, and not the much wider bulk band.
