Differential flotation of saccate pollen - a nuisance and a chance
Saccate (= vesiculate) pollen is non-wetable and floats for a longer time than other pollen types. It is therefore often overrepresented in littoral accumulations. This may cause difficulties in interpreting oscillating pollen curves. But it may also be useful (1) to estimate the period of terrestrialisation of a basin, (2) to detect hiatuses and (3) to reconsider pollen-zone boundaries that were based on crossings of pollen curves if one of the pollen types is saccate

Soil development and vegetation dynamics
How can soil development be traced?
Pedology has a number of ways to derive the history of soil types, for example chronosequences but what methods does palaeoecology offer?
1. Indicator taxa: Iversen (1954, 1958), Gaillard (1984), Kuneš et al. (2011) and others used indicator taxa recorded as pollen and/or plant macrofossils interpreting a shift from pioneer taxa to late-successional taxa as largely indicating a development from raw soils to various types of mature soils. Conclusions on soil moisture can be drawn based on macroremains of indicator taxa (Birks, 2015).
2. Geochemistry of the sediment: independent of biostratigraphies certain elements of the sediment (Willis et al., 1997; Braun et al., 2005) or stable isotopes such as δ13C (Hammarlund et al., 1997) may indicate a shift in soil type.
3. Nitrogen-fixing taxa: Hippophaë and Alnus played a role, but see also Hu et al. (2001), Kuneš et al. (2011), Ammann et al. (2013)
Challenges and Opportunities of Doing Fieldwork as a Woman on Women in Guinea
The researcher with his or her multiple identities, his or her background, and habits forms part of the experience in the field and therefore influences data generation. In this chapter, Ammann reflects on how her identity shaped her field research on the women-state nexus in a Muslim West African city. She analyses how she has dealt with gender-related difficulties and opportunities she came across during fieldwork, especially how she adapted her ethnographic approach because accessibility to women proved to be a major challenge. In the conclusion, Ammann argues that flexibility and adaptation are key for ethnographic research. She pleads for more contributions in which not only female but also male researchers reflect on how their gendered presence influences their research settings
Ammann-Beenker Pixels
We propose a new aperiodic pixel layout based on the Ammann-Beenker tiling. It is uniformly three-colorable and uses only two simple pixel shapes, making it advantageous over other irregular layouts for color imaging. The existing Penrose pixel layout, which is another aperiodic pixel
layout in rhombus Penrose tiling, also has the same properties. However, the Penrose pixel layout uses 36-degree and 72-degree rhombus pixel shapes, while the Ammann-Beenker pixel layout uses square and 45-degree rhombus pixel shapes. Hence the manufacture of Ammann-Beenker pixels is much
more feasible than that of Penrose. We evaluate the performance of Ammann-Beenker pixel layout with two problems: super-resolution and demosaicking. Experimental results show that Ammann-Beenker pixel layout outperforms square one and is highly competitive with Penrose one.</jats:p
Project 17B: Bern FN Core: Pediatric patients at risk for fever in chemotherapy-induced neutropenia (FN) in Bern, Switzerland, 1993-2012
Cohort of 583 pediatric patients treated with chemotherapy for cancer in Bern, Switzerland, from 1993 to 2012. 2113 observation periods covering 692 years of chemotherapy exposure with 712 FN episodes, 154 of them FN with bacteremia.
Dataset usable, e.g., for risk prediction of FN, and assessment of long-term changes of risk factors, FN rates, and their associations (interaction with time)
On the Structure of Ammann A2 Tilings
International audienceWe establish a structure theorem for the family of Ammann A2 tilings of the plane. Using that theorem we show that every Ammann A2 tiling is self-similar in the sense of Solomyak (Discret Comput Geom 20:265–279, 1998). By the same techniques we show that Ammann A2 tilings are not robust in the sense of Durand et al. (J Comput Syst Sci 78(3):731–764, 2012)
