[A Masked Identity in Seventeenth-century England: the Vicissitudes of the Hebraist Alessandro Amidei]. Reconstructs the strange vicissitudes of Alessandro Amidei, a Florentine, possibly Jewish, who moved to England in 1656. He apparently taught Hebrew at Oxford and Cambridge Universities in the 1650s, and it is certain that he was professor on the same topic in Edinburgh in the 1670s. A singular figure with a shifting and elusive identity, Amidei presented himself as a Catholic ecclesiastic converted to Protestantism on his arrival in England but in following years professed to be a Jew converted to Christianity. In 1684 he was involved in what seems to have been a case of attempted murder to the damage of the sons of Barbara Palmer, Duchess of Cleveland. The duchess’s sons accused Amidei of having poisoned their wine, although this presumed conspiracy was probably their own invention, a strategy to put an end to the union between their mother and a most embarrassing lover, an actor, who was also accused but released. In spite of the reputation he gained in the affair, in the following years Amidei – a character of endless resources – maintained relations with the English intellectual milieu. In the 1690s he was again at Cambridge, where he wrote at least two letters in Italian to John Covel, prominent vice-chancellor of the university. Amidei was also the author of an unpublished Italian translation of the Book of Common Prayer, dated 1661. Amidei’s story is interesting for various reasons. Whatever his real religious identity, his case shows how in the philo-Semite England of those years he found it more convenient to present himself as a Jew than as a convert from Catholicism. His story is also paradigmatic of the bizarre world of destitute wretches, often unfrocked friars and priests, who moved about the Italian Protestant church of London, passing from one confession to the other in search of financial support
2318, Pal. 613, Laur. Pluteo XLI.36 -. Completano il «Libro d'Amore», come è definito dallo stesso autore, alcuni notevoli testi in prosa e in versi, in parte inediti e qui integralmente pubblicati.
Libro d'amore attribuibile a Giovanni Boccaccio.
This Introduction addresses the issue of culture itself as a source of nourishment. Food will thus be discussed as a metaphor conducive to a multidisciplinary approach to learning and creative processes, as in Dante’s «Convivio» knowledge is, precisely, a form of nourishment. Accordingly, we will approach culture not only as a refinement of the individual, but as an all-encompassing strategy for producing meaning, touching on every aspect of human life: from rituals to the arts, from historical self-representations to forms of popular culture, and to the contemporary re-negotiations of material habits in our consumerist societies
Trial and error mathematics: Dialectical systems and completions of theories
This paper is part of a project that is based on the notion of a dialectical system, introduced by Magari as a way of capturing trial and error mathematics. In Amidei et al. (2016, Rev. Symb. Logic, 9, 1-26) and Amidei et al. (2016, Rev. Symb. Logic, 9, 299-324), we investigated the expressive and computational power of dialectical systems, and we compared them to a new class of systems, that of quasi-dialectical systems, that enrich Magari's systems with a natural mechanism of revision. In the present paper we consider a third class of systems, that of p-dialectical systems, that naturally combine features coming from the two other cases. We prove several results about p-dialectical systems and the sets that they represent. Then we focus on the completions of first-order theories. In doing so, we consider systems with connectives, i.e. systems that encode the rules of classical logic. We show that any consistent system with connectives represents the completion of a given theory. We prove that dialectical and q-dialectical systems coincide with respect to the completions that they can represent. Yet, p-dialectical systems are more powerful; we exhibit a p-dialectical system representing a completion of Peano Arithmetic that is neither dialectical nor q-dialectical
The article deals with the interpretation of Dec. I, I, and stresses the role of double of the author which is clearly visible in Ciappelletto. The notary from Prato is in fact a «mezzano», an intermediary, as the «Decameron» itself and its author. The confession is an act of creativity, a parody of literature, conceived to undermine the boundaries between true and false and to remind the moralistical detractors of Boccaccio that only God can judge
