Diphenylacetylene-linked peptide strands induce bidirectional β-sheet formation.

    No full text
In the search for synthetic mimics of protein secondary structures relevant to the mediation of protein-protein interactions, we have synthesized a series of tetrasubstituted diphenylacetylenes that display β-sheet structures in two directions. Extensive X-ray crystallographic and NMR solution phase studies are consistent with these proteomimetics adopting sheet structures, displaying both hydrophobic and hydrophilic amino acid side chains

β,β-directly linked porphyrin rings: synthesis, photophysical properties, and fullerene binding

    No full text
Cyclic porphyrin oligomers have been studied as models for photosynthetic light-harvesting antenna complexes and as potential receptors for supramolecular chemistry. Here, we report the synthesis of unprecedented β,β-directly linked cyclic zinc porphyrin oligomers, the trimer (CP3) and tetramer (CP4), by Yamamoto coupling of a 2,3-dibromoporphyrin precursor. Their three-dimensional structures were confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The minimum-energy geometries of CP3 and CP4 have propeller and saddle shapes, respectively, as calculated using density functional theory. Their different geometries result in distinct photophysical and electrochemical properties. The smaller dihedral angles between the porphyrin units in CP3, compared with CP4, result in stronger π-conjugation, splitting the ultraviolet–vis absorption bands and shifting them to longer wavelengths. Analysis of the crystallographic bond lengths indicates that the central benzene ring of the CP3 is partially aromatic [harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity (HOMA) 0.52], whereas the central cyclooctatetraene ring of the CP4 is non-aromatic (HOMA –0.02). The saddle-shaped structure of CP4 makes it a ditopic receptor for fullerenes, with affinity constants of (1.1 ± 0.4) × 105 M–1 for C70 and (2.2 ± 0.1) × 104 M–1 for C60, respectively, in toluene solution at 298 K. The formation of a 1:2 complex with C60 is confirmed by NMR titration and single-crystal X-ray diffraction

Concentration in Knowledge Output: A case of Economics Journals

    No full text
This paper assesses the degree of author concentration in seven economics journals, which were published in India during 1990-2002. To measure the degree of author concentration, Lotka's Law was used. Moreover, we also make an exploratory analysis of the geographic, economics subfield and institutional concentration in 704 economics journals. An important finding of this paper is that specialized journals in the sample report the highest degree of author concentration. This result is quite similar to the findings by Cox and Chung (1991). Furthermore, there are several instances showing that the journals lean towards certain norms; this may affect the flow of innovative ideas into economics. We conclude that a knowledge activity, involving the high degree of concentration and a biased publication process, may affect the flow of new ideas into the discipline.Concentration, Lotka's Law

"'Traumatic Screens': l'11 settembre visto dal televisore della Sig.ra Thompson"

The paper aims to read David Forster Wallace’s essay “The View From Mrs Thompson” (appeared in the October 25, 2001 issue of Rolling Stone) through the exegetic filter of trauma theory, in order to interpret the manner the author chose to account for his own account of the horror of 9/11, which he experimented not directly, but mediated by the screen of a television in a Midwest living room, namely Mrs Thompson

Short-term alteration in voluntary feed intake after selenium supplementation in Angora goat kids

    No full text
The objective of this study was to examine the effect of selenium (Se) supplementation on voluntary feed intake in Se-deficient Angora goat kids and its temporal relationship to alterations in the concentrations of thyroid hormones in plasma and the activity of glutathione peroxidase in serum. Angora goat kids were fed pelleted lucerne with a Se concentration of 20 mu g/kg of dry matter (DM) and treated orally with either Se (0.1 mg/kg of liveweight weekly, as sodium selenate) or deionised water. Supplementation with Se had no effect on DM intake measured over 21 days. Serum activity of glutathione peroxidase was increased by Day 1 of treatment (P < 0.001), plasma concentration of thyroxine was decreased by Day 21 of treatment (P < 0.01), and plasma concentration of triiodothyronine was unaffected by treatment. It is concluded that increased appetite is unlikely to be the primary mechanism involved in the response to Se supplementation in Angora goats.PT: J; CR: *SAS I INC, 1988, SAS US GUID STAT VER ARTHUR JR, 1993, AM J CLIN NUTR S, V57, P236 BUNK MJ, 1980, J NUTR, V110, P743 DONALD GE, 1993, AUST J EXP AGR ANIM, V33, P411 EWAN RC, 1976, J NUTR, V106, P702 HAFEMAN DG, 1974, J NUTR, V104, P580 HUSSEIN KSM, 1982, ACTA AGR SCAND, V23, P556 THOMPSON JN, 1969, J NUTR, V97, P335 THOMPSON KG, 1980, RES VET SCI, V28, P321 UNDERWOOD EJ, 1977, TRACE ELEMENTS HUMAN WALSH DM, 1993, INT J VITAM NUTR RES, V63, P188 WICHTEL JJ, 1995, IN PRESS J DAIRY SCI WICHTEL JJ, 1996, NEW ZEAL J AGR RES, V39, P111; NR: 13; TC: 1; J9: N Z J AGR RES; PG: 4; GA: UM341Source type: Electronic(1

    Gender and body image

    No full text
That gender has a considerable impact on people’s body image may seem obvious based on the considerable attention paid to women’s and men’s bodies in popular culture (Thompson, Heinberg, Altabe, & Tantleff-Dunn, 1999; Wolf, 1991)
