The Impacts of Discrimination on Mental and Physical Health
The present studies investigated the role of campus climate and discrimination on college students’ mental and physical health. Young adults completed measures that assessed their perceptions of campus climate, sense of belonging, depressive symptoms, anxiety levels, sleep quality, physical health symptoms, and experiences with discrimination. Despite the fact that there were not any differences in physical health or sleep quality, there were significant differences in phycological health, specifically with depressive symptoms. Across both studies, there were significant group differences in mental health, particularly that students of color reported higher levels of depressive symptoms than white students. Having empathetic faculty was the most consistently important aspect of campus climate affecting depressive symptoms. The implications of the psychological consequences and the ways in which administration, faculty, and students can help alleviate the negative impacts of poor perceptions of campus climate and experiences with discrimination on the mental health of students are discussed

The effects of clinical placement on students' confidence in their mental health nursing competencies
This study evaluated and compared the effects of clinical placement on the confidence of baccalaureate nursing students in their mental health competencies. The study explored two research questions: 1) Does completing a clinical mental health course affect students' confidence in their mental health nrusing competencies? 2) Do the confidence levels of students whose clinical courses take place in community settings differ from those whose clinical courses take place in acute in-patient units?Peer reviewedFinal article published.Nursing studentsClinical mental health placemen
Evaluation of nursing students' work experience through the use of reflective journals
Aims The aim of this study was to explore the effects of a pilot clinical community mental health placement on general nursing students' lived experiences throughout that placement. Method A qualitative thematic analysis was undertaken on general nursing students' reflective journals during their clinical mental health course. A two-stage process involving independent analysis and a dependent analysis of the journals was carried out to identify themes. Results Four themes were identified: preconceived notions; learning outcomes/experiences; atmosphere of the workplace; and holistic client-centered care. Conclusions The students in this community clinical rotation gained more compassion and understanding towards those with mental illness and positively transformed negative opinions. They encountered a warmer and more welcoming atmosphere than they had previously experienced in other clinical settings, acquired an appreciation for holistic and client-centered approaches to nursing care and achieved positive learning outcomes and experiences. Factors that may have contributed to positive learning outcomes included the process of reflective journaling and the supportive learning environment for students. Existing knowledge about pedagogical approaches to nursing education in clinical mental health was supported and extended, and recommendations made for avenues of future inquiry.Peer reviewedmental health nursingCommunity mental healthnursing educationreflective practic
On the rate-dependent constitutive response of cortical and trabecular bone
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2010.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 163-172).The widespread use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) against American and coalition forces in the ongoing Iraqi and Afghani conflicts has caused a dramatic increase in the number of traumatic brain injury (TBI) cases seen in recent years. The skull acts as the first and primary line of defense for the brain. Researching this structure's protective capabilities and shortcomings is therefore critical to 1) understanding how blunt impact loads and blast waves are propagated through the skull and transmitted into the brain, and 2) improving and evaluating future combat protection systems. This doctoral study is aimed at mechanically characterizing and modeling the two major constituents of the skull: cortical and trabecular bone. The mechanical behavior of these two materials over a wide range of strain rates is identified through both a review of the existing literature data and our own experimental investigations. For the behavior of compact bone two separate viscoelastic rate-sensitivity regimes are identified and modeled with a Maxwell-Weichert model containing one linear elastic and two linear viscoelastic branches in parallel. The rate-dependent plasticity of the material is further shown to obey a simple power law relationship and the overall material behavior is captured in a generalized three-dimensional viscoelastic, viscoplastic constitutive model formulation. For validation, the three-dimensional constitutive model is implemented as a subroutine within a commercial nonlinear finite element program. Given the similar composition of both cortical bone and the solid portion of trabecular bone, the compact bone constitutive model is subsequently employed in modeling the trabeculae of cancellous bone within two complementary microstructural frameworks. The first approach utilized is to create three-dimensional solid bone models of trabecular architecture directly from micro computed tomography (CT) scans of cancellous bone biopsy samples. The original samples from which these micro CT scans were obtained are then tested experimentally and the resulting stress-strain curves are found to show excellent agreement with the micromechanical model predictions. Successful simulation of specimen loading was found to be contingent upon extracting the trabecular structure from micro CT data in such a way that matched the relative density of the resulting specimen mesh to the experimentally recorded value. Analysis of both the experimental and simulation results further demonstrates that 1) local distributions in strut relative density are highly influential in the determining the compressive strength of trabecular bone and 2) the formation of macroscopic, multi-strut shear bands is responsible for the initial plateau and post-yield softening exhibited by trabecular bone in uniaxial compression. 3 The second microstructural approach employed is to model the trabecular network with an idealized representative volume element (RVE) and apply periodic boundary conditions. This latter approach allows for rapid investigation of the effects of relative density and strain rate in determining trabecular bone's mechanical properties. Specifically, Young's modulus is found to vary in a nearly quadratic manner with relative density and compressive strength is shown to have a power law relationship to relative density with an exponent of 1.5. In addition, compressive strength is shown to have a power law dependence upon strain rate with an exponent of 0.055. These relationships and the magnitude of the values predicted are all found to closely match the experimental trends and values reported in the literature.by Timothy Paul Mahal Johnson.Ph.D
Activity-Based Costing (ABC) – An Effective Tool for Better Management
Activity-based Costing (ABC) is a powerful tool for the an organization to have an accurate and effective cost for its product avoiding cost distortion that may lead sustainable development and growth which is mandatory to be competitive in the era of globalization and complex business environment. The article contains some brief description of international journals on ABC. Author has tried to bring up the main essence of these journals. The mentioned journals cover a wide range of topics from theoretical aspects of ABC to its application. Author has discussed some specific cases in different countries. Some of our journals highlight the impact of ABC on the European firms where as some other has tried to discuss the American context of ABC. Analysis contains some data on the Nestle Bangladesh Ltd. which maintains the ABC. We have tried to analyze how successful the company is in implementing ABC. In the analysis of journals, author focused on different era of business like service sector, technology business, manufacturing sector and many more. Implementing ABC in these different sectors is a little bit different. ABC has to be implemented considering the characteristics of that sector. In total ABC has been proved to be successful for almost all the sectors. There have been some modifications in ABC also. Some other concepts have also been discussed here like theory of constraints, time driven ABC and many more. Keywords: ABC, management accounting, manufacturing sector, time driven ABC

DORIS LESSING’S FICTION AS FEMINIST PROJECTIONS
Doris Lessing, a world-renowned litterateur in aIl expressive style, depicts the essentials
difficulties of ladies besides the social structure of her time. Lessing looks for modern ways to describe
the background of a stuck female writer who expend her prior years in Africa, grows up to be energetic
and dissatisfied marxist, is a socially dedicated author, a creator, a helpmate, or a lover, and is
occasionally a lady. Lessing intends female's emotional problems in the middle of marriage ceremony
and love, motherliness and occupation, injustice of the insincerity, disaffection of a single career
female, and the emptiness of wedding in the established sequence and the community with her sharp
and delicate perspective. Lessing depicts her female characters in a variety of social situations and
from diverse male-female perspectives. Through her feminist writings, she attempts to awaken the
women's community to fight patriarchy. This research paper will look at the psychological difficulties
and intolerable encounter of potent her like Anna Wulf in The Golden Notebook and Mary Turner in
