No full textDuring the week of September 23 - 28, 1996, the Third
International Conference on Functional Analysis and Approximation
Theory was held at Acquafredda di Maratea (Potenza). Earlier meetings
were held on 1989 and 1992 at the same place.
The Conference was organized by the Center for Studies on
Functional Analysis and Approximation Theory of the University of
Basilicata (Potenza), which is directed by Prof. G. Mastroianni, with
the collaboration of the Departments of Mathematics of the Universities
of Basilicata and Bari and the Institute for Applications of
Mathematics (C.N.R.) of Napoli.
The executive organizing committee was made, other than by
Giuseppe Mastroianni, also by Francesco Altomare, Michele Campiti,
Giuliana Criscuolo and Bianca Maria Della Vecchia.
The main aim of the Conference was to promote interactions
between specialists and young researchers from functional analysis and
approximation theory as well as to renew some stimuli in solving
various open problems arising from these fields and in showing
applications to other fields of Mathematics which are closer to the
applied sciences.
The Conference was attended by over 190 mathematicians from 27
countries. The programme included 13 invited lectures and over 140
research talks.
The main topics that were treated include
- Banach spaces, Banach algebras, Fr‚chet spaces, approximation in
normed spaces.
- Function spaces and approximation problems.
- Linear operators on Banach spaces, ergodic theory, positive operators
- Semigroups of operators, Feller semigroups, partial differential
equations.
- Real functions and inequalities. Complex approximation.
- Approximation by positive operators. Rate of convergence.
- Orthogonal polynomials.
- Integral equations.
- Interpolation and quadrature formulas.
- Integral transforms and Fourier series.
- Wawelets.
- Numerical analysis and boundary element methods.
In this volume we collected some invited lectures together with
a selection of the papers corresponding to the research talks and which
have been properly refereed. Our thanks go to the referees for their
collaboration as well as their accurate work.

No full textDuring the week of September 22 - 28, 2000, the Fourth International Conference on Functional Analysis and Approximation Theory was held at Acquafredda di Maratea (Potenza). Earlier meetings were held in 1989, 1992 and 1996 at the same location.
The Conference was organized by the Center for Studies on Functional Analysis and Approximation Theory of the University of Basilicata (Potenza), which is directed by Prof. Giuseppe Mastroianni, with the collaboration of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Basilicata and the Department of Mathematics of the University and the Polytechnic of Bari.
Besides Giuseppe Mastroianni, the executive organizing committee consisted also of Francesco Altomare, Antonio Attalienti, Michele Campiti, Bianca Maria Della Vecchia and Mario Rosario Occorsio.
The main aim of the Conference was to promote interactions between specialists and young researchers in Functional Analysis and Approximation Theory as well as to renew some stimulations in solving several related open problems and in showing applications to other fields of Mathematics closer to the applied sciences.
The Conference was attended by over 160 mathematicians coming from 22 countries. The programme included 15 invited lectures and over 100 research talks.
Among the main topics treated therein we mention:
- Banach spaces, Banach algebras, Fréchet spaces, approximation in normed spaces. Best approximation.
- Function spaces and approximation problems.
- Linear operators on Banach spaces, spectral theory, ergodic theory, positive operators, algebraic systems of operators.
- Groups and semigroups of operators, Feller semigroups, evolution equations.
- Real functions and inequalities. Complex approximation.
- Approximation by positive operators. Rate of convergence.
- Orthogonal polynomials and Padé approximation.
- Integral equations.
- Interpolation and quadrature formulas.
- Integral transforms and Fourier series.
- Wawelets and digital information processing.
- Numerical analysis and stability methods.

No full textLa cerimonia inaugurale del XVIII Congresso Nazionale dell’Unione Matematica Italiana ha avuto luogo lunedì 24 settembre 2007 presso l’Aula Magna del Politecnico di Bari, Campus Universitario.
Sono intervenuti, nell’ordine, il Magnifico Rettore del Politecnicodi Bari, Salvatore Marzano, il Magnifico Rettore dell’Università degli Studi di Bari, Corrado Petrocelli, il Presidente dell’Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica (INdAM), Vincenzo Ancona, il Presidente della Conferenza dei Rettori delle Università Italiane (CRUI), Guido Trombetti, il Presidente della Giunta Regionale Pugliese, Nichi Vendola, il Dr. Marco Bronzini in rappresentanza del Sindaco del Comune di Bari, il Presidente del Gruppo di Lavoro Interministeriale per lo Sviluppo della Cultura Scientifica e Tecnologica, Luigi Berlinguer, il Sottosegretario al Ministero dell’Università e della Ricerca, Luciano Modica.
La cerimonia, coordinata da Michele Pertichino, si è aperta con i discorsi del Presidente del Comitato Organizzatore, Francesco Altomare, e del Presidente dell’UMI, Franco Brezzi. Si sono poi succeduti gli interventi dei Presidenti dell’AILA (Associazione Italiana di Logica ed Applicazioni), Carlo Toffalori, dell’AIRO (Associazione Italiana di Ricerca Operativa), Renato De Leone, dell’AMASES (Associazione Matematica Applicata alle Scienze Economiche e Sociali), Flavio Pressacco il cui saluto è stato letto da Lucia Maddalena, della MATHESIS (Società Italiana di Scienze Matematiche e Fisiche), Antonio Laforgia, e della SIMAI (Società Italiana di Matematica Applicata ed Industriale), Mario Primicerio.
La seduta inaugurale si è conclusa con la consegna dei Premi Bartolozzi, Caccioppoli, Fichera e Vinti a valenti matematici italiani che si sono contraddistinti in ambito internazionale per le loro ricerche in vari settori della Matematica

No full textFollowing a well-established tradition initiated on 1989, during the week of September 24-30, 2009, the Sixth International Conference on Functional Analysis and Approximation Theory was held at Acquafredda di Maratea (Potenza). Earlier meetings were held in 1989, 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004 at the same place.
The Conference was organized by the Center for Studies on Functional Analysis and Approximation Theory of the University of Basilicata (Potenza), directed by Prof. Giuseppe Mastroianni, with the collaboration of the Research Group “Real Analysis and Methods of Functional Analysis for Differential Problems and Approximation Problems” of the University of Bari, directed by Prof. Francesco Altomare.
Besides Francesco Altomare and Giuseppe Mastroianni, the organizing committee consisted also of Antonio Attalienti, Michele Campiti, Mirella Cappelletti Montano, Lorenzo D’Ambrosio, Maria Carmela De Bonis, Sabrina Diomede, Vita Leonessa, Donatella Occorsio and Maria Grazia Russo.
The meeting was devoted to some significant aspects of contemporary mathematical research on Functional Analysis, Operator Theory and Approximation Theory including the applications of these fields in other areas such as partial differential equations, integral equations and numerical analysis.
A special session was dedicated to Professor Giuseppe Mastroianni on the occasion of his 70th birthday, as a fair token of appreciation for his contribution to mathematics and to the organization of all the Maratea conferences (1989 – 2009).
The Conference was attended by over 150 mathematicians coming from more than 30 countries. The scientific program consisted of 14 plenary lectures and about 120 communications. Several thematic sessions were arranged.
Among the main topics treated therein we mention:
- Banach spaces, approximation in normed spaces.
- Fixed points theorems and best approximation.
- Banach lattices,
- Banach algebras, topological algebras and operator algebras.
- Function spaces.
- Linear and nonlinear operators on Banach spaces, positive operators, spectral theory
- Semigroups of operators, Feller semigroups and evolution equations.
- Ordinary and partial differential equations.
- Real functions and inequalities, complex approximation.
- Approximation by positive operators, approximation by nonlinear expressions, rate of convergence.
- Polynomial approximation, rational approximation.
- Interpolation and quadrature formulas.
- Orthogonal polynomials, special functions.
- Integral equations.
- Integral operators, integral transforms and Fourier analysis.
- Integral inequalities.
- Numerical analysis.
