Colorimetric characterization of ochres in a Palaeolithic flint pebble from Maschio dell’Artemisio, Latium, Italy
The flint pebble from Maschio dell’Artemisio, a peak of the Artemisio mountain range (South-East of Rome), represents one of the first complex artefacts from the Upper Palaeolithic of the Alban Hills possibly displaying a symbolic/artistic value (Altamura & Mussi, 2014). It has been used as a hammer stone and retoucher, to create or modify lithic implements. It shows a diffuse and intense ochraceous colour on almost half of its surface. In the present work we discuss the results of an innovative colorimetric approach to define the use of pigments in the Palaeolithic community of the area and eventually compare the raw materials with local supplies. Second-derivative diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) is a data treatment on colorimetric data used from the ‘80s in the characterization of soil (Scheinost et al., 1998). More recently, it has been applied on iron oxide and hydroxide minerals, to investigate their colour and crystal properties (Torrent & Barrón, 2003). Here it was used directly on an archaeological artefact, to determine the presence of yellow and red ochres, but also to quantify the amount of each pigment present in mixture on the surface. Data were acquired using either a colorimeter and fibre optic reflectance spectroscopy (FORS) and then compared to test the efficiency of both techniques.

boom economico, smentendo ogni stereotipo estetizzante o retorica
Durum what cultivar traceability in PDO Altamura bread by analysis of DNA microsatellites
Altamura bread is an Italian baking product that obtained the European mark of protected designation of origin (PDO). The varietal requirements of the official production protocol of this bread require it to be prepared from the durum wheat cultivars Appulo, Duilio, Arcangelo and Simeto (single or in combination, accounting for minimum 80%), and eventually other cultivars diffused in the production area. The aim of this work was to set up a microsatellite-based method for verifying the presence of the four required durum wheat cultivars in PDO Altamura bread, also in the presence of other cultivars up to 20%. Ten microsatellites were tested and the combination of the amplification profiles of four of them, characterised by high polymorphism and simple electrophoretic patterns, enabled to distinguish and identify breads from all the possible combinations of the cultivars required for PDO mark. The obtained amplicons were all in the range of molecular weight between 115 and 272 bp, and were analysed by capillary electrophoresis. The contribution of the single cultivars was detectable in the amplification profiles, enabling to verify their presence. The analysis was also effective in the case of additional cultivars
First data from the EGLE space experiment onboard the ISS
EGLE is a wide frequency band search-coil magnetometer
designed and built at the Roma Tre University. It has been
installed onboard the ISS by the Italian astronaut Roberto
Vittori on April 25, 2005 within the LAZIO-EGLE experiment
carried out during the ENEIDE Soyuz mission. The scope of the
experiment is to test EGLE in space and to investigate geomagnetic
field variations. The main applications of EGLE are
the study of electromagnetic environment inside the ISS, the
correlation of magnetic field data with particle fluxes detected
by LAZIO particle detector, and the monitoring of ionospheric
perturbations possibly caused by Earth seismic activity. Since
continuous electromagnetic field measurements on board the
ISS are important for diverse space applications, a magnetometer
with a suitable design is requested. Appropriate solutions for
these applications, which have been adopted by EGLE, are in
particular the use of 1-Wire technology and the possibility to
detect by means of a search-coil magnetometer a large portion
of the ULF frequency band, usually measured by flux-gate
probes. To investigate the topside ionosphere electromagnetic
environment and stability of Van Allen radiation belts in relation
with seismic and anthropogenic electromagnetic emissions, a
specific satellite mission (the ESPERIA project) has been
designed for the Italian Space Agency (ASI), and up to now a
few instruments of its payload have been built and tested in
space. One of them is exactly the EGLE search-coil magnetometer.
The first magnetic observations performed by this
instrument reveal to be promising and demand for a further and
deeper analysis based on a longer time series of dat
Paliperidone palmitate depot in the long-term treatment of psychotic bipolar disorder : A case series
Objectives: The treatment of bipolar disorder (BD) cannot be limited to the remission of acute phases but includes the long-term treatment in order to prevent relapses, poor outcome, and chronicity. The purpose of this article is to present 3 cases of severe psychotic bipolar patients treated with monthly injection of paliperidone pamoate.
Methods: Three poor-compliant severe psychotic BD patients were initiated to paliperidone palmitate (100–150 mg monthly), and they were followed up for 12 months. Young Mania Rating Scale and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale were administered at baseline and during monthly follow-up visits.
Results: None of patients presented recurrences or relapses during the 12-month follow-up period. The patients did not develop adverse effects or significant changes in metabolism.
Conclusions: These preliminary results indicate that paliperidone palmitate (100–150 mg monthly) may be a therapeutic option for long-term treatment of psychotic BD, particularly for poor-compliant severe patients. These results have to be confirmed in double-blind studies with bipolar patients not necessarily belonging to psychotic subtype
stati in graduatoria.
digitali nelle imprese e, in misura minore, nelle scuole e nelle università.
