How corporate governance and globalization can run afoul of the law and good practices in business: The Enron's disgraceful affair.

    No full text
The purpose of this paper is to set out the Enron’s demise into the perspective of Corporate and Global Governance. To accomplish this target, the incremental cash flow model is expanded to give room for governance issues, while a functional introduction to information sets is developed, including bounded rationality, asymmetric information, opportunistic behavior, transaction costs and agency problems. Then, corporate governance is linked to globalization by means of some recent approaches that go beyond a narrow economic mindset to encompass a far-reaching dynamics. Taking advantage of such background, the Enron’s story is tracked down over a span of fifteen years since its starting day to its bankruptcy filing. Leading events are explained from corporate and global governance viewpoints, while an in-depth analysis is worked out on Enron’s complex game of deception and breach of contracts: the outrageous affiliated limited partnerships, the lavish pay package to its executives, the involvement with global governance through the Indian affair and the Taliban connection. It is for the incremental cash flow model to explain malfeasance with cash flows from assets, and how cash flows to creditors were actually contrived. Furthermore, to highlight how cash flows were swindled from stockholders and, finally, how Enron made wheeling and dealing with cash flows on behalf of its managers.corporate governance, global governance, incremental cash flow model, globalization, information sets, good practices.

Magnetoresistance, temporal evolution, and relaxation of the electrical resistivity in the re-entrant semiconducting La0.80Ba0.20CoO3 perovskite

We report here a study on the electrical and magnetic properties of La1-xBaxCoO3 in the re-entrant semiconducting region (x = 0.20). We find that in this material: (i) the insulator-metal-insulator sequence is unstable and evolves toward a purely semiconducting behavior; the initial ρ versus T curve can be reinstated upon appropriate annealing treatments; (ii) there are relaxation effects that can be seen by changing the polarity of the electrodes; (iii) there is a negative magnetoresistance Δρ/ρ approx. 2-3%, for a field as low as 9 kOe, especially at the metal-insulating transition temperatures; and (iv) there are important fluctuations in the electrical resistivity. Taking into account these experimental observations, we can interpret this material as an inhomogeneous system where two thermodynamic phases, one semiconducting and the other metallic and ferromagnetic, coexist, although they are crystallographically indistinguishable.Fil: Sanchez, Rodolfo Daniel. Effects of aging on the electrical resistivity of La1-xBxCoO3 perovskites (B = Sr, Ca, Ba; 0.20 ≤ x ≤ 0.30)

A study of the reliability of the title compounds as a basis for magnetoresistive sensors is presented. For this purpose we have carried out long-term systematic studies of the evolution of the resistive and magnetic properties of samples synthesized by both ceramic and wet chemical routes, allowing them to age during several months. It is observed that, although the magnetic properties remain unaltered, their resistivity does change appreciably. With time, samples that are initially metallic over all the measured temperature range (T < 300 K), change to semiconductor-like behaviour at low temperatures and above their ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition temperature, giving rise to a 'reentrant semiconducting behaviour' with associated high electrical noise, relaxation effects of the resistivity and even diodic behaviour.Fil: Mira, J.. "A New Technique for Reconstructions of Large Metadiaphiseal Bone Defects"

    No full text
Tumors involving the metadiaphyseal region around the knee are often treated by intraarticular resection (and reconstructed by prosthesis or osteoarticular allografts) even when the subchondral bone could be saved and an intercalary reconstruction applied. This is due to problems associated with the reconstruction of the subarticular diaphyseal bone defects by conventional methods. Intercalary allografts (as well as cortical autografts) have significant complication rates in terms of delayed union or graft fracture: these would be significantly increased in those patients in whom an adequate osteosynthesis for support is not feasible. The use of a vascularized fibula alone is contraindicated because it cannot provide sufficient stability for the epiphysis and is too weak to allow early weight bearing. The Ilizarov technique (bone transportation) is extremely time consuming and it may be at risk in patients under aggressive chemotherapy (pin tract infection, possible interference with callus formation). Furthermore, the thin subarticular segment requires an additional ring across the joint, causing knee stiffness. The authors describe a new surgical technique to manage this surgical problem. The basic idea consists to bridge the bone defect using a massive allograft as a peripheral shell supporting a centrally placed micro-vascular fibular autograft. This technique was introduced by the first author in 1988 and preliminary results first described by Capanna et al. in 1989 and in 199

Effect of Mn-site doping on the magnetotransport properties of the colossal magnetoresistance compound La2/3Ca1/3Mn1-xAxO3 (A=Co, Cr; x≤0.1)

    No full text
In this paper we show the effect of Mn site substitution (≤10%) by Co and Cr on the magnetotransport properties of ceramic samples of La2/3Ca1/3MnO3. Resistivity, magnetization, and magnetoresistance were systematically investigated as a function of doping. An increase in resistivity and a diminution of metal-insulator transition and Curie temperatures was observed as a consequence of both Co and Cr doping. The evolution of the number of neighbors ferromagnetically coupled to Mn was studied in each sample, and the results suggest some degree of ferromagnetic coupling between Cr3+ and Mn ions. Implications of both ferromagnetic Cr 3+-O-Mn3+ superexchange and double exchange interactions are discussed. We also found the existence of an optimum doping level that enhances colossal magnetoresistance. This has been explained considering electron localization due to magnetic disorder induced by doping in the Mn site.Fil: Rivadulla, F..
