The Alnwick Castle Podcast No.82: The 4th Duke and the Victorian rogue - with Peter Lindfield and Frances Mcintosh
No full textAt Alnwick Castle, the 4th Duke of Northumberland is probably best known for his restoration of the castle in the 1850s and 1860s, transforming the State Rooms and creating the Great Kitchen. But before all that work began, he had encountered a man named George Shaw, who was able to convince him to buy a number of pieces of antique furniture from old Percy properties. The problem? George had faked this furniture, making it himself, and deceiving the duke about its origins.
To find out more about this story, we spoke to Dr Peter Lindfield of Cardiff University - an expert on George Shaw - and Frances McIntosh of English Heritage, who looks after the Duke's Rooms at Warkworth Castle, where you can still see some of the George Shaw furniture bought by the 4th Duke. We found out just who George Shaw was, what happened when the duke figured out he'd been conned, and why this Victorian rogue might be considered a 19th century Robin Hood!

A Precedent of Cultural Heritage in England: Alnwick Castle
No full text[eng] The ideas of the castle as well as the functions that they represent within a cultural society are aspects that attract the public worldwide. It is not just the idea of a place where a prince or king lives that attracts them but the different historical events that occurred in that place as well as its different functions from residences for the nobility to prisons used during important moments of history. The main objective of this paper is to observe how Alnwick Castle, located in Northumberland, is considered English cultural heritage. To do this, an explanation will be given about the history of castles, the idea of heritage and ending with the history of the castle itself together with the idea of how the production of films and TV series have helped the value of cultural heritage to increase, especially through the saga Harry Potter and the TV series Downton Abbey. After the analysis, it will be seen that the idea of the castle did not begin until 1066 with the Norman Conquest and that Alnwick Castle, which, on paper, is little known and culturally a little valued castle, enjoys a rich and famous history that should be known all over the world and not only for the simple fact of appearing in the film industry
