    Black women advocates in congress: a case study of the agenda setting and legislative sponsorship of Maxine Waters and Cynthia McKinney during the 105th congressional session, 2002

    The focus of this study is on United States Congresswomen Maxine Waters and Cynthia McKinney and their advocacy for social justice through their legislative agendas. The rationale for this study is based on the lack of literature and studies that have been conducted on black women in Congress. This case study examines legislation sponsored by the congresswomen during the 105th Congressional Session that covers the years 1997 through 1998. This study finds that both Congresswomen Maxine Waters and Cynthia McKinney almost exclusively sponsor legislation that is socially progressive

Project MUSE, doi:10.1353/lib.2018.0028Since its inception in March 2014, the LIS Microaggressions project (www.lismicroaggressions.com) has grown as an online source and zine publication for library and information science (LIS) workers from marginalized communities to share their experiences with microaggressions in the workplace. This article will examine the project’s efforts to move conversations on diversity, race, racism, and antiracism in the LIS field to transgressive and actionable steps. Through conference presentations, zine-making workshops, and distribution of zines at LIS conferences, the LIS Microaggressions collective wishes to “call in” or otherwise actively engage the LIS profession for critical reflection and analysis about microaggressions in the workplace with the ultimate goal of fostering support and a participatory community for library workers dealing with microaggressions

    Teachers' perceptions of giftedness and minority students' placement in DeKalb county's gifted programs, 2001

    This study examined teachers' perceptions of giftedness and minority students' placement in metropolitan DeKalb County Schools. The study was based on the premise that teachers' referrals relate to perceptions of giftedness. Creativity, motivation, and brightness characteristics were identified as indicators of giftedness. nModerator variables included teachers' job role, ethnicity, and years of teaching experience as it related to the ethnic composition of the gifted program and the ethnic composition of the school. A survey was developed to gather data for this research investigation and the Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) was used to analyze the data. The study found that teachers at the elementary school level reported a statistically significant relationship between the ethnic composition of the gifted program and the ethnic composition of the school. Teachers' knowledge of gifted characteristics was equally balanced as it related to the ethnic composition of the school and the ethnic composition of the gifted program. The Pearson correlation and ANOVA was used to establish the validity for both inventories as well as to assess the seven hypotheses and seven research questions posed

    Evolution and systematics of the angiosperm order Gentianales with an in-depth focus on Loganiaceae and its species-rich and toxic genus Strychnos

    The Gentianales includes five families known for their horticultural value and medicinal effects: Apocynaceae (milkweeds and rosy periwinkle), Gelsemiaceae (Carolina jessamine), Gentianaceae (gentians), Loganiaceae (strychnine plants), and Rubiaceae (coffee and quinine). They are a monophyletic assemblage, but the relationships between the families have been uncertain. The Loganiaceae are a mostly pantropical group with a few members reaching into temperate North America and Australia. This family includes 15 genera that have been divided into four tribes, one of which, Strychneae, was paraphyletic in previous analyses based on chloroplast and morphological data. Strychnos is the largest genus in Loganiaceae with approximately 200 species distributed throughout the tropics. This genus is well-known for its alkaloid production, in particular that of strychnine. Although strychnine has been popularized for its potential nefarious uses, many Strychnos species have been lauded for their medicinal properties conferred by other compounds. Strychnos was divided into 12 sections based on morphology, but the monophyly of these was in doubt as the sections were morphologically, chemically, and anatomically heterogenous. Combined analyses of four chloroplast regions, matK, ndhF, rbcL, and trnL, placed Rubiaceae as the most basal family in the Loganiaceae. Loganiaceae and Gelsemiaceae were the two subsequently diverging clades, and Apocynaceae and Gentianaceae were sisters in the most nested position. Within the Loganiaceae, tribe Antonieae was basal to all other tribes. Strychneae was resolved as monophyletic only when morphology was included in a combined analysis with a nuclear ribosomal gene region (ITS) and rps16 of the chloroplast genome. An analysis of the secondary structure of the ITS region resulted in possible new synapomorphies for tribes Antonieae and Spigelieae within the Loganiaceae. The current sectional treatment of Strychnos does not reflect the evolution of the genus, and recommendations for improving the classification will be made. This work will have large implications for the understanding of chemical and morphological evolution on ordinal, familial, and tribal levels in the Gentianales, and provides a framework for further studies in biogeography, habit evolution, and speciation processes.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references

    Computational thinking: the developing definition

    Since Jeanette Wing’s use of the term computational thinking in 2006, various discussions have arisen seeking a robust definition of the phrase. With no consensus having been found in the intervening years, there are even suggestions that a definition is not important. Perhaps focus should be on how computational thinking is taught and how its acquisition might be observed. However, in order to facilitate consistent curriculum design and appropriate assessment, it is argued that a definition should still be sought. In order to contribute to the discussions surrounding a definition of computational thinking, this review of literature spans the years since 2006. The most frequently occurring terms, descriptions, and meanings are identified. Consideration is given to the motivation for inclusion or exclusion of a term by each individual author. Where possible, if a description has been given, an associated term is supplied.Criteria are developed for the objectives of a computational thinking definition, in accordance with the needs identified in the literature. Using the criteria as a guide and the collected terms as the vocabulary, a definition of computational thinking is proposed. <br/
