Is this the death of social democracy in Europe?
Roger Liddle argues that structural changes, which have weakened the centre left across Europe, may also explain New Labour's apparent decline. Copyright (c) 2008 The Author. Journal compilation (c) 2008 ippr.

We thank Dr Spence for his interest in the 2020 International Society of Hypertension (ISH) Global Hypertension Practice Guidelines and highlighting what he considers blind spots in the new guidelines. Specifically, the author is concerned that Liddle syndrome, one of the rare monogenic causes of hypertension is not mentioned and its treatment not appropriately addressed in the 2020 ISH guidelines. Dr Spence provides insightful comments describing the central role of the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) in Liddle syndrome which is responsible for its clinical features including early onset of salt-sensitive hypertension, hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis, and suppression of both renin and aldosterone secretion. Importantly, Liddle syndrome is associated with increased incidence
of premature cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events and usually unresponsive to mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists
Exile and migration of Pontic Greeks : the experience of loss as the presence of absence.
In this thesis, I explore the experience and significance of absence in the lives of Pontians who live in Adelaide. Pontians are descendants from colonies of Greeks who, for at least 3000 years, inhabited the area bordering the Black Sea in northern Turkey in an area once called Pontos. Their underlying and ongoing sense of absence derives from two historical events of loss. One is from a genocide and enforced exile from Pontos wherein 350,000 of their people died between 1917 and 1923. The other is from voluntary migration when some of the Pontic Greeks who had settled in Greece, and/or their descendants, came to Australia as part of the mass migration of peoples in the mid 20th century. The memories and narratives of the traumatic loss of people and place from Pontos, and the experiences associated with migration to Australia, have played a pivotal role in the construction and experience of absence for Pontians and is an important dimension of their identity as Pontians. The memory of loss is always in the present and is evoked by present experiences and sensed through a multi-faceted expression of emotions. It is embodied in a variety of corporeal practices such as commemorations, dance, community gatherings and return visits and is experienced as an absence. Given that many of my informants have lived in Adelaide for up to fifty years, a central question of this thesis is, how do they continue to remember the loss of their former homelands and why does this elicit an often deep emotional response? In this thesis, I explore how social memory, emotions and embodiment intertwine in the practices of commemoration, dance and journeys to show how loss from the past events of exile and migration are brought into the present to be experienced as both an absence and the presence of that absence. Focusing on how the body experiences being-in-the-world through temporally and historically informed sensory engagement, as well as drawing on a conscious as well as an unconscious reservoir of meaning, loss is not only tied to past events but in and through the body becomes both an absence of a presence and the presence of an absence.Thesis (Ph.D.) -- University of Adelaide, School of Social Sciences, 201

Estimating content quality in the world wide web
The World Wide Web is used by an increasing number of people as an everexpanding source of information on almost every topic imaginable. However, useful data is often buried in large quantities of low-quality content. Estimation of content quality is valuable for diverse applications, such as search result ranking and direction of crawlers. In this text an approach is described to automatically determine author identity of web pages and compile data on author reputation in order to better estimate the quality of new content. The results of preliminary studies are presented which show the viability of the author reputation approach

Novel palm shortening substitute using a combination of rapeseed oil, linseed meal and beta-glucan
Corrigendum to “Novel palm shortening substitute using a combination of rapeseed oil, linseed meal and beta-glucan” [Food Chemistry, 457 (2024), 140134](S0308814624017849)(10.1016/j.foodchem.2024.140134) available at: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.foodchem.2024.140273.
The authors regret to inform that they omitted to include in the manuscript that Julien Lonchamp and Catriona Liddle are co-inventors on the patent PCT/GB2023/051783 (Palm-based shortening substitute). The authors would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused. © 2024 The Author(s)This study investigated the potential of a novel sustainable ingredient composed of rapeseed oil, linseed meal and beta-glucan (PALM-ALT) to mimic palm shortening functionality in cake. The combined functional properties of linseed meal and beta-glucan led to stable semi-solid emulsion-gels (20–31 μm oil droplet size, 105–115 Pa.s viscosity and 60–65 Pa yield stress). PALM-ALT contained 25 and 88% less total and saturated fat than palm shortening, whilst PALM-ALT cakes contained 26 and 75% less total and saturated fat than the palm-based control. PALM-ALT cakes matched the flavour profile of the palm-based control, while rapeseed oil cakes tasted more sour and less sweet than the control (p < 0.05). PALM-ALT cakes proved less hard and more cohesive than the control (p < 0.05), with 100% of the consumer panel preferring PALM-ALT formulations. This study demonstrated the unique potential of PALM-ALT as healthier, sustainable and competitive alternative to palm shortening.https://doi.org/10.1016/j.foodchem.2024.140134457pubpu
Cosmological parameter estimation using Very Small Array data out to ℓ= 1500
We estimate cosmological parameters using data obtained by the Very Small Array (VSA) in its extended configuration, in conjunction with a variety of other cosmic microwave background (CMB) data and external priors. Within the flat Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) model, we find that the inclusion of high-resolution data from the VSA modifies the limits on the cosmological parameters as compared to those suggested by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) alone, while still remaining compatible with their estimates. We find that Ωbh2= 0.0234+0.0012−0.0014, Ωdmh2= 0.111+0.014−0.016, h= 0.73+0.09−0.05, nS= 0.97+0.06−0.03, 1010AS= 23+7−3 and τ= 0.14+0.14−0.07 for WMAP and VSA when no external prior is included. On extending the model to include a running spectral index of density fluctuations, we find that the inclusion of VSA data leads to a negative running at a level of more than 95 per cent confidence ( nrun=−0.069 ± 0.032 ), something that is not significantly changed by the inclusion of a stringent prior on the Hubble constant. Inclusion of prior information from the 2dF galaxy redshift survey reduces the significance of the result by constraining the value of Ωm. We discuss the veracity of this result in the context of various systematic effects and also a broken spectral index model. We also constrain the fraction of neutrinos and find that fν < 0.087 at 95 per cent confidence, which corresponds to mν < 0.32 eV when all neutrino masses are equal. Finally, we consider the global best fit within a general cosmological model with 12 parameters and find consistency with other analyses available in the literature. The evidence for nrun < 0 is only marginal within this model
Galaxy Zoo:chiral correlation function of galaxy spins
Galaxy Zoo is the first study of nearby galaxies that contains reliable information about the spiral sense of rotation of galaxy arms for a sizeable number of galaxies. We measure the correlation function of spin chirality (the sense in which galaxies appear to be spinning) of face-on spiral galaxies in angular, real and projected spaces. Our results indicate a hint of positive correlation at separations less than ~0.5 Mpc at a statistical significance of 2-3 sigma. This is the first experimental evidence for chiral correlation of spins. Within tidal torque theory it indicates that the inertia tensors of nearby galaxies are correlated. This is complementary to the studies of nearby spin axis correlations that probe the correlations of the tidal field. Theoretical interpretation is made difficult by the small distances at which the correlations are detected, implying that substructure might play a significant role, and our necessary selection of face-on spiral galaxies, rather than a general volume-limited sample
