Paura e speranza
The chapter examines the passions of fear and hope by considering the treatment offered by Remo Bodei in his "Geometrie delle passioni". Fear is Hobbes's passion and hope is the Christian virtue. The Jacobins join the two together within their project of revolution. Jacobinism is overcome by the return of traditionalism yet it leaves as its inheritance the hope for a better world which is an essential component of democracy. The author suggests a different employment of the passion of hope, independent from the Christian and Jacobin genealogy, and thus a different kind of perfectionism, a democratic one, which is to be located in Emerson and J.S. Mill
Experimental analysis of flanking transmission of different connection systems for CLT panels
This paper presents the first results of the flanksound project, a study promoted by Rotho Blaas srl regarding flanking transmission between CLT panels jointed with different connection systems. The vibration reduction index Kij is evaluated according to the EN ISO 10848 standard by measuring the velocity level difference between CLT panels. The performance of the X-RAD connection system is compared to the performance of a traditional connection system made of shear angle bracket and hold-down, both the configurations being tested with and without a resilient material placed between the construction elements. Concerning the traditional system, the influence of the difference sizes and types of fasteners - including the method of nailing or screwing - was also evaluated. The results of the measurements exposed in this work will hopefully contribute to the development of the acoustic design of timber buildings by providing a solid database of Kij values, which can be used to forecast the acoustic performance of the building according to the prediction models proposed in EN 12354-1
Experimental measurements of flanking transmission in CLT structures
This paper discusses the results of an experimental campaign that lead to the characterisation of flanking transmission in CLT structures with different connection systems. The vibration reduction indices Ki j were measured in accordance with the ISO 10848-1 standard in order to provide data suitable to calculate the apparent reduction index according to the EN 12354-1 standard. The research explored several vertical and horizontal junctions on which different number and the type of screws and plates, different CLT panels, and resilient materials at the wall-floor junction were tested. The analysis of these data will hopefully provide a significant tool to improve the accuracy of the prediction methods and to help the acoustic designer of timber building
Optimising the mechanical characterisation of a resilient interlayer for the use in timber construction
Resilient interlayers are used in the field of building acoustics to reduce the transmission of vibrations through the flanking transmission paths. To this end, EPDM rubber or polyurethane strips are often used as dampers and therefore a complete mechanical characterisation for these materials is required. Most of the time, the mechanical characterisation has been related to the use as damping materials to be used in "standardised" application, such as industry. This paper reports the mechanical characterisation of an extruded polyurethane strip to be used in timber buildings. The mechanical characterisation of the strip was conducted according to standard tests (tensile, compression) on macro samples as well as using the DMA in tensile and shear mode, over a wide temperature range. The stress strain relation in compression was evaluated loading the sample with different boundary conditions in order to take into account the friction provided by different supports. Steel plates, timber lamellas and the "ideal" situation without friction were tested, pointing out the peculiar characteristics of the material when used as interlayer in CLT buildings. Considerations are made relative to the extraction of the E modulus over different ranges and related to the real on-site application of the loads that might render necessary an insight into the definition of the elastic properties of such materials
Medici in cerca d'autore
Physicians in Search of an Author. The doctor is a constant presence in our society. Balzac juxtaposed this figure with the priest and the man of law, “the former heals the wounds of the soul, the latter those of the pursue, the doctor those of the body”. In the course of time these three figures have lost their “carnality”, becoming three icons, a sort of “Holy Trinity” of our villages. In this representation, however, the truly central character is the doctor, while the other two, depending on countries and eras, may change. As for physicians, what do they think? Was there a significant episode that determined their choice? When did they feel like doctors for the first time? What relationships do they have with patients and colleagues? What about their feelings, emotions, fears, desires? How do they construct the social distinction between clinicians and surgeons? Making a distinction between the motivations behind their choice and the manner in which physicians perform their profession, the author tries to decipher the “black box” of medical identity. He does so collecting the stories of doctors in various branches of different ages and professional placements. Like the characters of the Italian dramatist Pirandello, evoked in the title, they tell their stories in first person. Their narratives appear strikingly similar to those of doctors in flesh and blood from other parts of the world or to “imaginary” doctors created by the fantasy of great writer - doctors (Bulgakov, Čechov, Celine, Conan Doyle, Cronin, Munthe, etc.). Perhaps even the choice of trying to understand the profession through biographical tales reveals more than a point of intersection with the “narrative” approach in medicine: to make a proper anamnesis, both clinically and sociologically, it is necessary to collect a good story, as only this can tell us not only the what, where and when, but also the how and why
Crescere in una famiglia omogenitoriale
There is still a very lively debate on social and legal rights for same-sex families. Nontraditional
families constitute the vast majority of families in the industrialized world today. Like
other contemporary families, same-sex families are facing new challenges and difficulties,
like economic and legal disparities and social stigma, which can adversely affect children
development. In this paper the author summarizes current knowledge on social, psychological,
and sexual well-being in children raised by gay and lesbian parents. Extensive data
available from more than 30 years of research support the idea that children reared by
same-sex parents do not differ from children with heterosexual parents on psychological
health, social, cognitive and psychosexual development, peer relations, and school achievement.
Results demonstrate that children’s well-being is affected much more by their relationships
with their parents, their parents’ sense of competence and security, and the presence
of social and economic support for the family than by the gender or the sexual
orientation of their parents. There is still a very lively debate on social and legal rights for same-sex families. Nontraditional

Four Ideal Types of Physicians in Search of an Author, relazione presentata al XVII Congresso mondiale dell'International sociological association, Göteborg, Svezia, RC 52, 4a sessione, Professional identities on the move.
In this paper the impact of motivations for practicing medicine on physicians’ identity will be analyzed. Following a survey of 900 doctors whose findings have been discussed at the Oslo meeting almost two years ago, this time I have been turning to qualitative inquiry in order to seek the views of medical practitioners themselves on motivational factors and other, correlated, issues. The findings of semi-structured in depth interviews with forty doctors living in two medium sized towns, one in the South (Cosenza) and the other (Brescia) in the North of Italy, are elaborated. As for motivational factors, the stratification of professional identity thesis has been confirmed and four ideal types of doctors have been devised. 1. The ones that have chosen “emotionally” and for whom medicine was a “call” and that never even considered another option. 2. For a second group a singular episode was very important, namely the presence of a family doctor in their childhood that used to visit their relatives and that they admired and loved very much. 3. A third group was particularly attracted by the human organism and interested in the way it works. 4. Finally, there are those who have considered other works, often connected with hard sciences, and for whom medicine was more a rational choice. Other related issues are then discussed, particularly the main cleavage among the above groups of doctors that is the division between physicians and surgeons
Doctors' Narratives, paper presentato al XVIII ISA World Congress of Sociology, 13-19 luglio, 2014, Session: Narrative Medicine or Narratives in Medicine? RC15 Sociology of Health, 15 luglio, Pacifico Yokohama, Yokohama, Giappone.
DOCTORS’ NARRATIVES. My answer to the question outlined in the title of the call for papers of this session (Narrative Medicine or Narratives in Medicine?) would be: “Doctors’ Narratives”. As illness narration is a means to gain direct access to the subjective aspects of illness, so utilization of doctors narratives in which they portrait themselves is important in order to understand who physicians really and symbolically are and how they socially build their identity. Making a distinction between the motivations behind their choice and the manner in which physicians perform their profession, the author tries to decipher the “black box” of medical identity. He does so using 39 qualitative, in depth interviews with doctors working in Italy in various branches of different ages and professional placements. The narratives so collected appear strikingly similar to those of doctors in flesh and blood from other parts of the world or to “imaginary” doctors created by the fantasy of great writer - doctors (Bulgakov, Čechov, Celine, Conan Doyle, Cronin, Munthe, etc.). Epistemic trust and psychopathology. Is the effect of childhood trauma mediated by epistemic disruptions?
Epistemic Trust (ET) is a construct of increasing relevance to psychotherapy theory and research, defined as the individual’s ability to regard interpersonally transmitted knowledge as trustworthy, relevant, and socially generalizable. Being a fundamental capacity that enables social learning and allows individuals to benefit from their interpersonal relationships, ET may play a crucial role in explaining the development and maintenance of psychopathology. ET also has important associations with attachment security, mentalizing abilities, and general levels of well-being. It has been proposed that complex trauma, in conjunction with other factors, may disrupt ET development, leading to excessively high levels of epistemic vigilance (i.e., to Epistemic Mistrust [EM]), or to an inappropriate and blind trust in others (i.e., to Epistemic Credulity [EC]). Both EM and EC might interfere with the ability to adaptively respond to interpersonal difficulties, hindering psychotherapy effectiveness. This study aimed to assess levels of ET, EM, and EC in a group of 445 adults, utilizing the Epistemic Trust, Mistrust, and Credulity Questionnaire (ETMCQ). Data were collected through an online survey. We aimed at investigating the association between ET, EM, EC, and multiple aspects of psychological functioning, such as reflective functioning, psychological symptoms, mentalized
affectivity, attachment patterns, and the presence of childhood trauma. Moreover, we aimed at exploring if the relationship between childhood adverse experiences and psychological symptoms is mediated by the presence of a specific epistemic stance. Other than the results of these analyses, some methodological and theoretical issues regarding epistemic trust will be discussed
