Introducing Iqbal the Economist
No full textThe Iqbal Memorial Lecture was instituted in 1994 when the Pakistan Society of Development Economists (PSDE) celebrated the completion of a decade of steady progress. A brief announcement stated: “The Iqbal Memorial Lecture attributed to the national poet [Emphasis added], Allama Muhammad Iqbal has been included in the programme for the first time. Professor Ian M. D. Little is delivering that lecture” [Secretary’s Report (1994), p. 1472]. Iqbal, the poet and philosopher par excellence, has made incisive remarks or comments on economic and social issues in his poetry, philosophical writings, and in the course of his discourses as well as some famous letters, particularly those written to the Quaid-i-Azam, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. But these do not make Iqbal an economist. The Secretary of the PSDE was, therefore, careful in observing that the lecture commemorates our “national poet”. However, it will be of great interest to this largest national congregation of economists and other scholars concerned with development to know that the very first published book of Iqbal related neither to poetry nor philosophy, but economics. It was written in Urdu. He also taught the subject at undergraduate and Master’s level, even though he had not studied it as a student. At the Government College, Lahore, Iqbal studied English, Philosophy and Arabic for his B.A. and then completed the M.A. in Philosophy.
Reflection of Prophets love in Kalam e Iqbal: کلامِ اقبال میں پر توِ عشقِ رسول ﷺ
No full textAllama Muhammad Iqbal, a renowned poet and philosopher of the Islamic world, belonged to a devoutly religious family and embodied the spirit of a true Muslim. The most valuable and prominent aspect of his life was his profound love and unwavering obedience to the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). While Iqbal's poetry does not adopt the traditional style of Naat recitation, it resonates deeply with an immense and unfathomable devotion to the Holy Prophet. His writing reveals a unique and spiritual perspective on the event of the Prophet’s Ascension (Mi'raj), illustrating the mysteries and wisdom of this miraculous journey. Dedicated to the service and supremacy of Islam, Iqbal aspired for all Muslims to not only embody the teachings of Allah and His Messenger but also to spread this divine message to every corner of the world.

Technological impact on the art of moviemaking: deploying new and convergent media to redefine a model for Pakistan’s cinema
No full textThis thesis examines the decline in Pakistani cinema during the last two decades. It examines the history of the cinema and exposes some possible, previously ignored, causes for that decline. This research led the author to ask “Can new and convergent media be helpful in reviving the Pakistani cinema?” The thesis introduces the ideas of established and emergent cinema, building on the work of Williams (1977) in discussing the ideas of dominant, residual and emergent culture. The exploration reveals two gaps in the film industry: first, the lack of training in the making of films; and, second, the change in possible production methods allowed by new and emergent technologies. The thesis addresses both of these gaps by suggesting new production paradigms which incorporate the new technology and by examining two scripts to develop methodologies for teaching. The scripts are produced into films as the practice section of the research. The first film, creative element 1, is developed using some of the new tehnologies, students as crew and the available resources of an educational establishment to test the methodologies that have been derived. The outcomes of the creative element 1 laid the foundation of the second film, creative element 2. It is shot on mobile phones and distributed from Pakistan through Vimeo with a negligible budget. The social networks helped to arrange equipment and locations and allowed extreme freedom to the filmmaker
