Çetin, Serkant Ali (Dogus Author)Using 2.92 fb(-1) of electron-positron annihilation data collected at root s = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, we report the results of a search for the flavor-changing neutral current process D-0 -> gamma gamma using a double-tag technique. We find no signal and set an upper limit at 90% confidence level for the branching fraction of B(D-0 -> gamma gamma pi(0)pi(0)) = (8.24 +/- 0.21(stat) +/- 0.30(syst)) x 10(-4), the most precise measurement to date and consistent with the current world average

Çetin, Serkant Ali (Dogus Author)Using 482 pb(-1) of data taken at root s = 4.009 GeV, we measure the branching fractions of the decays of D*(0) into D-0 pi(0) and D-0 gamma to be B(D*(0) -> D-0 pi(0)) = (65.5 +/- 0.8 +/- 0.5)% and B(D*(0) -> D0 gamma) = (34.5 +/- 0.8 +/- 0.5)%, respectively, by assuming that the D*(0) decays only into these two modes. The ratio of the two branching fractions is B(D*(0) -> D-0 pi(0))/B(D*(0) -> D-0 gamma) = 1.90 +/- 0.07 +/- 0.05, which is independent of the assumption made above. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones systematic. The precision is improved by a factor of 3 compared to the present world average values

Çetin, Serkant Ali (Dogus Author)Using 2.92fb-1 of electron-positron annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy of s=3.773GeV with the BESIII detector, we present an improved measurement of the branching fraction B(D+→ωe+νe)=(1.63±0.11±0.08)×10-3. The parameters defining the corresponding hadronic form factor ratios at zero momentum transfer are determined for the first time; we measure them to be rV=1.24±0.09±0.06 and r2=1.06±0.15±0.05. The first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. We also search for the decay D+→φe+νe. An improved upper limit B(D+→φe+νe)<1.3×10-5 is set at 90% confidence level

Factors influencing development of management strategies for the Abou Ali River in Lebanon. I: Spatial variation and land use

    No full text
Surface water bodies are progressively subject to increasing stress as a result of environmentally degrading processes primarily related to anthropogenic activities. This study assesses and examines the impact of land use and anthropogenic activities on the spatial variation in water quality of the Abou Ali River in North Lebanon. It is the first detailed study of its kind in Lebanon and adds to the existing Knowledge by shedding light on a relatively small Mediterranean river in a developing country where there is a paucity of such studies. The assessment was conducted at the end of the dry season in 2002 and 2003 and the end of the wet season in 2003 and 2004. The study has demonstrated the importance of anthropogenic influences on the water quality of the Abou Ali River Basin, as concentrations of most contaminants were higher at locations with greatest human activity. The most adversely affected area was the section of the river that flows through an entirely urbanized and highly populated region, the Tripoli conurbation. Upstream rural sites were enriched by contaminants primarily from non-point sources such as agricultural runoff and poultry litter whereas contaminant concentrations at the urban sites were enriched by a combination of sewage discharge and flow of contaminants from upstream. If the Abou Ali River is to be utilized as a managed water resource and its water quality sustained, point source discharges will require treatment and land use management must be planned to minimize the impact of diffuse source pollution on the river. A high priority should be given to the implementation and enforcement of the precautionary and polluter pays principles. Moreover, an effective legal, economic and institutional framework is required to encourage investment in waste reduction and control and to introduce environmentally sound practices

Çetin, Serkant Ali (Dogus Author)We present an analysis of the decay D+ -> K-pi(+)e(+)nu(e) based on data collected by the BESIII experiment at the psi(3770) resonance. Using a nearly background-free sample of 18262 events, we measure the branching fraction B(D+ -> K-pi+e+nu e) = (3.77 +/- 0.03 +/- 0.08)%. For 0.8 K-pi+e+nu e)([0.8,1.0]) = (3.39 +/- 0.03 +/- 0.08)%. A partial wave analysis shows that the dominant (K) over bar* (892)degrees component is accompanied by an S-wave contribution accounting for (6.05 +/- 0.22 +/- 0.18)% of the total rate and that other components are negligible. The parameters of the (K) over bar* (892)degrees resonance and of the form factors based on the spectroscopic pole dominance predictions are also measured. We also present a measurement of the (K) over bar* (892)degrees helicity basis form factors in a model-independent way

An analytical study of the theatre of the Syrian playwright Saadallah Wannous, with particular emphasis on the plays written after the 1967 war

This study is an examination of the life and work of the Syrian dramatist Saadallah Wannous (1941-1997). Wannous's name is virtually unknown in the West; only two academic studies of any significance have appeared in English on this eminent and challenging writer, who was honoured by UNESCO at the end of his life. Even in the Arab world his standing rests largely upon his celebrity as a cultural icon, since professional performances of his plays are rare due to the decline of the theatre in the region, and little attention has been devoted to theatre studies by Arab academics. The two studies in English do not attempt to be comprehensive but focus on particular stages of Wannous's career. This study is, therefore, the first to encompass the full range of Wannous's work. To do so it combines an account of his life which seeks to comprehend the various forces that shaped his thinking with an analysis of his dramatic works. The study concentrates on the plays written in the years following the trauma inflicted on the Arab world by the catastrophe of their defeat in the Arab-Israeli war of June, 1967. Wannous's career can be divided into three phases: the immature plays of his young manhood which are influenced by European models and generally focus on the social condition of the individual; his middle period - the `theatre of politicisation', when his Marxist politics were the main factor shaping his drama; and his late works, which are characterised by an extraordinary freedom of thought and expression. The introduction places Wannous in his historical and sociocultural context and provides a brief background explaining the literary and theatrical traditions of the Arab world that influenced his activity as a dramatist. Each phase is then examined in turn and the plays are analysed in accordance with the focus of the study. This means that emphasis is given to the middle period, but no significant work is neglected. The study aims to trace the trajectory of Wannous's development using a variety of sources: the plays themselves, Wannous's own journalism and critical writings, interviews with his widow, his friends and colleagues, and numerous journals, books and articles, some of which contain important interviews with Wannous that shed light on his thought and ways of working. Use is also made of the two studies mentioned above. The study shows that Wannous's theatre was influenced by the key political, social and cultural developments of his time, and that he constantly sought to find forms that would express those transformations in dramatic terms

Çetin, Serkant Ali (Dogus Author)We present a study of the process e+e-→π±(DD¯∗)∓ using data samples of 1092 pb-1 at s=4.23 GeV and 826 pb-1 at s=4.26 GeV collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. With full reconstruction of the D meson pair and the bachelor π± in the final state, we confirm the existence of the charged structure Zc(3885)∓ in the (DD¯∗)∓ system in the two isospin processes e+e-→π+D0D∗- and e+e-→π+D-D∗0. By performing a simultaneous fit, the statistical significance of Zc(3885)∓ signal is determined to be greater than 10σ, and its pole mass and width are measured to be Mpole=(3881.7±1.6(stat)±1.6(syst)) MeV/c2 and Γpole=(26.6±2.0(stat)±2.1(syst)) MeV, respectively. The Born cross section times the (DD¯∗)∓ branching fraction (σ(e+e-→π±Zc(3885)∓)×Br(Zc(3885)∓→(DD¯∗)∓)) is measured to be (141.6±7.9(stat)±12.3(syst)) pb at s=4.23 GeV and (108.4±6.9(stat)±8.8(syst)) pb at s=4.26 GeV. The polar angular distribution of the π±-Zc(3885)∓ system is consistent with the expectation of a quantum number assignment of JP=1+ for Zc(3885)∓
