Too little, too late: reduced visual span and speed characterize pure alexia
Get PDFWhether normal word reading includes a stage of visual processing selectively dedicated to word or letter recognition is highly debated. Characterizing pure alexia, a seemingly selective disorder of reading, has been central to this debate. Two main theories claim either that 1) Pure alexia is caused by damage to a reading specific brain region in the left fusiform gyrus or 2) Pure alexia results from a general visual impairment that may particularly affect simultaneous processing of multiple items. We tested these competing theories in 4 patients with pure alexia using sensitive psychophysical measures and mathematical modeling. Recognition of single letters and digits in the central visual field was impaired in all patients. Visual apprehension span was also reduced for both letters and digits in all patients. The only cortical region lesioned across all 4 patients was the left fusiform gyrus, indicating that this region subserves a function broader than letter or word identification. We suggest that a seemingly pure disorder of reading can arise due to a general reduction of visual speed and span, and explain why this has a disproportionate impact on word reading while recognition of other visual stimuli are less obviously affected

Implicit reading in Chinese pure alexia
Get PDFA number of recent studies have shown that some patients with pure alexia display evidence of implicit access to lexical and semantic information about words that they cannot read explicitly. This phenomenon has not been investigated systematically in Chinese patients. We report here a case study of a Chinese patient who met the criteria for pure alexia and had lesions in the left occipitotemporal region and the splenium of the corpus callosum. His explicit and implicit reading was evaluated with various stimuli in a number of tasks. We found that despite his severe impairment in overt reading and the definition of any characters, his performance was well above chance in various implicit tasks. His accuracy with respect to lexical decisions was so high that his performance was almost normal. These findings provide unequivocal evidence for the existence of implicit reading in Chinese patients with pure alexia and further support the involvement of the right hemisphere. Chinese pure alexia
No full textTwo Chinese pure alexic patients are reported. C.Y.T. had a circumscribed lesion in the left occipital lobe, the same location as the classic cases of pure alexia in other languages. Y.Y.X. was diagnosed with Balint's syndrome characterized by bilateral damage in the parietal and occipital lobes. The Chinese script is logographic and non-alphabetic. Nevertheless, the neuroanatomy of early processing in reading Chinese appears to be the same for readers of alphabetical and non-alphabetical scripts. Both patients displayed a 'radical-by-radical' reading strategy which is analogous (and possibly functionally equivalent) to 'letter-by-letter' reading in alphabetic patients. There was an association between constructional apraxia and a deficit in processing the visual form of Chinese characters for Y. Y. X. However, C. Y. T. had intact visuospatial function and displayed no impairment to the processing of character form. The implications of the data from pure alexic patients to our understanding of oral reading in Chinese are discussed
Alexia: Antigone Kefala's overdue fairytale
Get PDFThe aim of this paper is to examine the way in which Antigone Kefala constructs her story to become an author. She narrates her experience in her book Alexia (Antigone Kefala"s persona) in a fairytale manner. In the book we learn that Alexia spent some of the most important years of her young life in New Zealand, as a migrant. The most important part of this experience is based on her difficulty to come to terms with, and learn, a new language (English). What begins by being a traumatic experience for Alexia, later evolves into a creative force that guides her decision to become an author. In that way the English language becomes the most powerful, the most creative and the most productive tool in her life.
In order to challenge Alexia's process of becoming an author, her experience is compared to that of two famous French authors, Aragon and Sartre, who also decided to become authors in their childhood years. There was an obvious parallel between the French authors’ experiences through their first language, which corresponded in an astonishing way to Alexia's. Therefore, no matter whether one wishes to express oneself in one’s mother tongue or a foreign language, the process of becoming an author is always to consider a language as an unknown field of strange sounds, musicality and scattered grains of meanings

No full textLe attuali emergenze sanitarie a livello mondiale impongono di chiederci come sia possibile gestire una situazione di emergenza e come sia possibile farlo ancor prima che la prevenzione e la cura siano note e perseguibili. La cura e la prevenzione sono prassi del Modello Medico, il quale si assesta su un livello di intervento "meccanicistico". Oltre alla questione sanitaria, di grande rilevanza per la Comunità, ci si chiede come sia possibile trasportare quello che viene proposto in termini di prassi a livello sanitario anche per la promozione della Salute. A fronte di questo, nel volume vengono esplicitate le differenze tra l'uso dei termini " Salute" e "Sanità" e si pone il focus su una proposta operativa fondata sul modello dialogico per la promozione della Salute nella Comunità, intesa come membri della specie che abitano un certo territorio. In tal modo si punta a poter generare un apparato altrettanto diffuso e disponibile del Modello Medico, che si faccia carico della Salute, anche nei termini di un'Architettura dei Servizi che possa dirsi generativa di Salute, Coesione, assunzione di Responsabilità. Infine il libro di testo offre riscontro alla domanda: in piena emergenza sanitaria si può parlare di Salute? In che modo promuoverla
