Generalized Luscher's formula in multichannel baryon-baryon scattering
In this paper, Luscher's formula is generalized to the case of two spin-1/2 particles in two-channel scattering based on our previous work [Phys. Rev. D 87, 014502 (2013)]. This is first done in a nonrelativistic quantum mechanics model and then generalized to the quantum field theory. We show that Luscher's formulas obtained from these two different methods are equivalent up to terms that are exponentially suppressed in the box size. This formalism can be readily applied to future lattice QCD calculations in nucleon-nucleon or nucleon-hyperon scattering processes.http://gateway.webofknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcApp=PARTNER_APP&SrcAuth=LinksAMR&KeyUT=WOS:000341287600002&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=ALL_WOS&UsrCustomerID=8e1609b174ce4e31116a60747a720701Astronomy & AstrophysicsPhysics, Particles & FieldsSCI(E)[email protected]
Adaptive and Mutational Responses to Peptide Dendrimer Antimicrobials in Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Colistin (polymyxin E) is a last-resort antibiotic against multidrug-resistant isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. However, the nephro-toxicity of colistin limits its use, spurring the interest in novel antimicrobial peptides (AMP). Here, we show that the synthetic AMP-dendrimer G3KL (MW 4,531.38 Da, 15 positive charges, MIC = 8 mg/liter) showed faster killing than polymyxin B (Pmx-B) with no detectable resistance selection in P. aeruginosa strain PA14. Spontaneous mutants selected on Pmx-B, harboring loss of function mutations in the PhoQ sensor kinase gene, showed increased Pmx-B MICs and arnB operon expression (4-amino-l-arabinose addition to lipid A), but remained susceptible to dendrimers. Two mutants carrying a missense mutation in the periplasmic loop of the PmrB sensor kinase showed increased MICs for Pmx-B (8-fold) and G3KL (4-fold) but not for the dendrimer T7 (MW 4,885.64 Da, 16 positive charges, MIC = 8 mg/liter). The pmrB mutants showed increased expression of the arnB operon as well as of the speD2-speE2-PA4775 operon, located upstream of pmrAB, and involved in polyamine biosynthesis. Exogenous supplementation with the polyamines spermine and norspermine increased G3KL and T7 MICs in a phoQ mutant background but not in the PA14 wild type. This suggests that both addition of 4-amino-l-arabinose and secretion of polyamines are required to reduce susceptibility to dendrimers, probably neutralizing the negative charges present on the lipid A and the 2-keto-3-deoxyoctulosonic acid (KDO) sugars of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS), respectively. We further show by transcriptome analysis that the dendrimers G3KL and T7 induce adaptive responses through the CprRS two-component system in PA14
Two particle states and the S-matrix elements in multi-channel scattering
Using a quantum mechanical model, the exact energy eigenstates for two-particle two-channel scattering are studied in a cubic box with periodic boundary conditions in all three directions. A relation between the exact energy eigenvalue in the box and the two-channel S-matrix elements in the continuum is obtained. This result can be viewed as a generalization of the well-known Luscher's formula which establishes a similar relation in elastic scattering.Physics, Particles & FieldsSCI(E)27ARTICLE7nul
The (false) dichotomy of the author and reader in the short story cycle, and, Hesket
Critical discourse surrounding the short story cycle has traditionally offered two differing approaches to formal unity. One method, championed by Robert Luscher, emphasizes the reader in the creation of coherence, whereas the other foregrounds the author and form, as conceived by Forest Ingram. Recent scholarship has questioned the necessity of this division but is yet to conclusively interrogate if and how these oppositional methodologies work together. My critical thesis aims to bridge the two approaches by demonstrating how the creation of unity is in fact an interactive process, evidenced by my analysis of both a published short story cycle (The Shore by Sara Taylor), and through my engagement with archival materials from the British Archive for Contemporary Writing, to investigate the compositional history of that text.
My creative component is an exploration of the short story cycle form in which the ordinary and the peculiar commune in shifting perspectives and intertwining stories. It posits how the uncanny and the natural world intersect, and then examines the way in which this convergence occurs within a small Norfolk community
Finite-size effect of eta-deformed AdS(5) x S-5 at strong coupling
We compute Luscher corrections for a giant magnon in the eta-deformed (AdS(5) x S-5)eta using the su(2 vertical bar 2)q-invariant S-matrix at strong coupling and compare with the finite-size effect of the corresponding string state, derived previously. We find that these two results match and confirm that the su(2 vertical bar 2)q-invariant S-matrix is describing world-sheet excitations of the eta-deformed background. (C) 2017 The Author(s). Antimicrobial Peptide-Peptoid Hybrids with and without Membrane Disruption.
Among synthetic analogues of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) under investigation to address antimicrobial resistance, peptoids (N-alkylated oligoglycines) have been reported to act both by membrane disruption and on intracellular targets. Here we gradually introduced peptoid units into the membrane-disruptive undecapeptide KKLLKLLKLLL to test a possible transition toward intracellular targeting. We found that selected hybrids containing up to five peptoid units retained the parent AMP's α-helical folding, membrane disruption, and antimicrobial effects against Gram-negative bacteria including multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae while showing reduced hemolysis and cell toxicities. Furthermore, some hybrids containing as few as three peptoid units as well as the full peptoid lost folding, membrane disruption, hemolysis, and cytotoxicity but displayed strong antibacterial activity under dilute medium conditions typical for proline-rich antimicrobial peptides (PrAMPs), pointing to intracellular targeting. These findings parallel previous reports that partially helical amphiphilic peptoids are privileged oligomers for antibiotic development
Two particle states in an asymmetric box and the elastic scattering phases
The exact two-particle energy eigenstates in a generic asymmetric rectangular box with periodic boundary conditions in all three directions are studied. Their relations with the elastic scattering phases of the two particles in the continuum are obtained for both D-4 and D-2 symmetries. These results can be viewed as a generalization of the corresponding formulas in a cubic box obtained by Luscher before. In particular, the s-wave scattering length is related to the energy shift in the finite box. Possible applications of these formulas are also discussed.Astronomy & AstrophysicsPhysics, Particles & FieldsSCI(E)0ARTICLE1null7
O simbolismo de cor nas obras de M.A. Bulgakov
The article considers in detail the issue of studying the color symbolism in the works of M.A. Bulgakov. The main purpose of this paper was to consider the history of studying the issue of color symbolism in the works of M.A. Bulgakov and independent analysis of the use of color components in the writer's vocabulary with an emphasis on the concept of psychological interpretation of color by M. Luscher. The author actively uses such colors as blue, black, green, and yellow. Considering the various goals which the author wants to achieve in his works, in general, a single feature of the color symbolism is noted: using gloomy, dark images; the use of color contributes to greater immersion in an environment of serious emotional tension and the importance of experiences for the main characters.El artículo considera en detalle la cuestión del estudio del simbolismo del color en las obras de M.A. Bulgakov. Antimicrobial Peptide Dendrimers and Quorum-Sensing Inhibitors in Formulating Next-Generation Anti-Infection Cell Therapy Dressings for Burns
Multidrug resistance infections are the main cause of failure in the pro-regenerative cell-mediated therapy of burn wounds. The collagen-based matrices for delivery of cells could be potential substrates to support bacterial growth and subsequent lysis of the collagen leading to a cell therapy loss. In this article, we report the development of a new generation of cell therapy formulations with the capacity to resist infections through the bactericidal effect of antimicrobial peptide dendrimers and the anti-virulence effect of anti-quorum sensing MvfR (PqsR) system compounds, which are incorporated into their formulation. Anti-quorum sensing compounds limit the pathogenicity and antibiotic tolerance of pathogenic bacteria involved in the burn wound infections, by inhibiting their virulence pathways. For the first time, we report a biological cell therapy dressing incorporating live progenitor cells, antimicrobial peptide dendrimers, and anti-MvfR compounds, which exhibit bactericidal and anti-virulence properties without compromising the viability of the progenitor cells
