No full textIn September 2017 Alexander Nehamas kindly accepted our invitation to have a meeting in Athens in order to discuss several issues of philosophical interest; with his latest publication On Friendship (New York: Basic Books, 2016) as a starting point we soon moved over to a multitude of topics Nehamas has so far dealt with. The whole conversation spirals around the probably most challenging and demanding issue as far as practical philosophy is concerned – yet one every moral agent needs to provide an adequate answer to during his lifetime: Values. Do they exclusively belong to the domain of morality? Nehamas claims that “although moral values […] are important […], they are not the only values that determine whether a life is or is not worthwhile”. This view inevitably shifts the focus from individual values - even fundamental ones such as friendship, art and truth- to the real issue: What is a good life, after all?</jats:p

No full textŠajā bakalaura darbā pievēršos trīs nozīmīgu 20. gadsimta Platona lasītāju - Gregorija Vlastosa, Hansa-Georga Gadamera un Aleksandra Nehamasa - tekstiem, kas veltīti Platona darbam Faidons. Darba pirmajās trīs nodaļās aplūkoju katra autora trīs Faidonu komentējošus tekstus, pieņēmumus, secinājumus un pieejas, kas tajos uzrādāmas, kā arī katra autora saistību ar Platona lasījumu tradīcijām. Ceturtajā nodaļā salīdzinu kopīgo un atšķirīgo Vlastosa, Gadamera un Nehamasa uzskatos un metodēs, bet darba noslēgumā sniedzu visu trīs autoru pieeju izvērtējumu. Darba ietvaros aplūkoju Gregorija Vlastosa darbus “Iemesli un cēloņi Faidonā”, “Piezīme par “pāviliskajām predikācijām” Platona darbos” un “Realitātes pakāpes Platona darbos”; Hansa-Georga Gadamera darbus “Nemirstības pierādījumi Platona Faidonā”, “Dzīvība un dvēsele: Faidons”, “Dvēsele starp dabu un garu”; Aleksandra Nehamasa rakstus “Predikācija un pretējību formas Faidonā”, “Platons par sajūtamās pasaules nepilnīgumu” un “Pašpredikācija un Platona formu teorija”.This bachelor’s thesis is dedicated to the works by Gregory Vlastos, Hans-Georg Gadamer, and Alexander Nehamas - three significant figures in 20th century Plato scholarship - which specifically deal with Plato’s Phaedo. The first three chapters of the work give an overview of three commentaries on Phaedo by each author as well as their assumptions, conclusions, distinct approaches and ties to different traditions of Plato’s interpretation. The fourth chapter compares the similarities and differences between the views and methods of Vlastos, Gadamer, and Nehamas, but the evaluation of the three approaches is provided in the conclusion of the work. No full textIn this chapter we try to trace a historical arc from Socrates to Foucault, passing through Epictetus, according to which the guiding thread of Philosophy is an integral form of life and / or art of living and not a mere academic speculative activity. The approach is carried out in the light of the authors Pierre Hadot and Alexander Nehamas. Finally, the influence of Epictetus and his Art of living in the last Foucault is highlighted, which was a philosophical praxeological finding: an 'aesthetics of existence' fulfilled in Parresia or neocinic veridiction. We transcribe as an existential contribution an Epictetian section reassumed by Foucault in his last days.
En este capítulo se pretende trazar un arco histórico desde Sócrates a Foucault, pasando por Epicteto, según el cual el hilo conductor de la Filosofía es una forma integral de vida y/o arte de vivir y no una simple actividad especulativa académica. El abordaje se realiza a la luz de los autores Pierre Hadot y Alexander Nehamas. Finalmente, se resalta el influjo de Epicteto y su Arte de vivir en el último Foucault, que constituyó todo un hallazgo filosófico praxeológico: una ‘estética de la existencia’ plenificada en la Parresía o veridicción neocínica. Transcribimos como aporte vivencial un acápite epictetiano reasumido por Foucault en sus últimos días
