    Men in Crisis

In ihrer Dissertation Lad Trouble. In her dissertation Lad Trouble: Masculinity and Identity in the British Male Confessional Novel of the 1990s Andrea Ochsner does a close reading of eight male confessional novels (aka: "ladlit") and analyses them as a phenomenon of the alleged crisis of masculinity in Great Britain. According to Ochsner, who is a lecturer for English Literature and Cultural Studies at the University of Basel, this crisis is marked by men\u27s uncertainty in the face of the emergence of a plurality of masculinity scripts which followed the feminist movement and the focalisation of masculinity as the marked gender in the media of the 1990s. Ochsner argues that ladlit foregrounds the problematic construction of masculine identity at the time. In spite of some minor shortcomings in regards to the author\u27s theory and method, Lad Trouble is an intelligent study which can be recommended for students and PhD candidates who are looking for examples of how to work productively with sources from contemporary popular culture

Free Improvisation in Groups: Cooperation, Facilitation and Group Dynamics: An Empirical Study

    No full text
This thesis explores the process of musical group-improvisations by asking two main questions: To what extent is it possible for an observer to correctly sense important aspects of the participants' experience? And which areas should a therapist attend to, if he/she wants to facilitate fruitful improvisations in a group? These two questions are linked, since a clear perception of 'what goes on in the music' will usually be the starting point for constructive facilitation. An experiment is presented, which is designed to test the validity of interpretations based on music-improvisations. In this experiment, a total of 14 group improvisations were conducted with two groups of four participants. All participants were normal-functioning adolescents with an interest in music. The author took part in one of the groups as a facilitator and co-improviser, whereas the other group was on its own. After each session, the participants, as well as the author, completed a questionnaire on how they perceived the improvisation. Central to these questionnaires were aspects such as 'peak moments', 'overall satisfaction' as well as questions addressing social interaction and group dynamics. On two occasions, external observers, who were all music therapy students, were included in the experiment in order to validate important findings.Based on a comparison of the participants answers and the observers interpretations, some tentative conclusions are put forth: If the therapist/ facilitator participates in the improvisation, his judgments are less objective and more faulty than when just observing; it is comparatively easier for an observer to correctly sense more 'behavioral' (e.g. 'exerting influence') aspects of the improvisation, than sensing internal or emotional aspects (e.g. 'feeling frustrated'); prior knowledge of each persons musical and interpersonal preferences is an important factor when trying to guess how that person experienced the improvisation; even strong feelings in a participant can go completely unnoticed by an observer or a group of observers. Some caution about ones judgements is therefore adviced. Subsequently some non-intended findings of the experiment are presented. These findings suggest that: An improvisation-group can function surprisingly well without a facilitator; there is a strong relation between how much influence a person has, and how satisfied he is with an improvisation; facilitation can aid in making the participants more supportive towards other people's musical expression

    Pumped Transfer of Liquefied Gases

    No full text
The transfer of liquefied gases comprises a special hazard potential. Therefore special equipment and expertise is necessary. It is not possible for every HazMat base to hold its own equipment. Therefore in Switzerland the Flüssiggaspikett der Ostschweiz and DSM Nutritional Products, Sisseln, can be called out to provide help if incidents with liquefied gases occur. A case study of a real mission is presented. Furthermore technical specifications of key items and the experience of the author are provided

    No full text
Background: The 6-minute walk test (6-MWT) has replaced standard cardiopulmonary exercises for the evaluation of lung disease. However, data on the utility and characteristics of the 6-MWT following lung transplant are lacking. This study aimed to determine if 6-MWT distance has a normal distribution at 6 months post-transplant and if lower 6-MWT distance was predictive of all-cause mortality

Sleep is essential. Unfortunately, a significant portion of the population experiences altered sleep states that often result in a multitude of health-related issues. The regulation of sleep and sleep-wake cycles is an area of intense research, and many options for treatment are available. The following review summarizes the current understanding of normal and abnormal sleep-related conditions and the available treatment options. All clinicians managing patients must recommend appropriate therapeutic interventions for abnormal sleep states. Clinicians\u27 solid understanding of sleep physiology, abnormal sleep states, and treatments will greatly benefit patients regardless of their disease process. © Academic Division of Ochsner Clinic Foundation

Tumornachsorge nach potentiell kurativer Resektion eines Karzinoms

Surveillance programs have been recommended for colorectal and breast cancer patients in several countries, and appropriate surveillance guidelines have been issued by various societies. The Swiss Society of Gastroenterology consensus paper recommends a surveillance program for patients after curative resection of colorectal cancer (CRC), and the respective guidelines are updated regularly. Early detection of recurrent disease from CRC allows treatment with intention to cure. Five year survival rates after treatment for recurrent CRC can reach up to 50 % or more. Therefore tumor surveillance in CRC is important, and there is compelling evidence that patients benefit from intensive surveillance. In addition to clinical controls, measurements of carcinoembryonal antigen, colonoscopies and thoraco-abdominal CT scans should be performed on a regular basis. For surveillance of breast cancer (BC) patients, a regular schedule is recommended as well. However, this surveillance program is more focussing on the detection of possible loco-regional tumor relapse, as curative therapy of BC metastases is much less frequently possible than in CRC patients. Irrespective of the underlying tumor entity, surveillance is an important and challenging process that should be coordinated by one single physician. It is crucial that all involved physicians are aware of their responsibility and that they are informed about the respective surveillance program and its benefit to the patient

The author studies the moss-vegetation of the beech-forests in the corsican mountains and the ecological features of four main biotopes. Between 800 and 1 6 00 m, the Grimmio-A ntitrichietum nova ass., with Grimmia Hartmanii and Antitrichia cultripendula, followed by Dicranum scoparium, Isothecium myurum and Pterigynandrum filiforme which accumulate at their basis a fine organic and sour unsaturated horizon, covers the granitic or schistous rocks. The acid soil of the beech-forests has a thicker texture, is less humiferous and often bears a strong litter of dead leaves. Under such conditions, the cryptogamie strata (Pohlia cruda, Isothecium myurum, Hypnum cupressiforme, Bartramia pomiformis) finds a shelter in the clearings and on the slopes. The Antitrichietum cultripendulae typicum (Ochsner 1926) Barkm. 1958, var Pterigynandrosum filiformis Ochsner 1928 with Pterigynandrum filiforme, Leucodon sciuroides, Homalothecium sericeum, Antitrichia cultripendula , occurs on the northern and eastern faces of Fagus trunks and the Orthodicranum strictum, Pterigynandrum filiforme and Buxbaumia indusiata association, which belongs to the Blepharostomion (Stefureac 1941) Barkm. Is It All About the Form? Norm-vs Criterion-Referenced Ratings and Faculty Inter-Rater Reliability

    No full text
Background: Little research to date has examined the quality of data obtained from resident performance evaluations. This study sought to address this need and compared inter-rater reliability obtained from norm-referenced and criterion-referenced evaluation scaling approaches for faculty completing resident performance evaluations. Methods: Resident performance evaluation data were examined from 2 institutions (3 programs, 2 internal medicine and 1 surgery; 426 residents in total), with 4 evaluation forms: 2 criterion-referenced (1 with an additional norm-referenced item) and 2 norm-referenced. Faculty inter-rater reliability was calculated with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) (1,10) for each competency area within the form. ICCs were transformed to z-scores, and 95% CIs were computed. Reliabilities for each evaluation form and competency, averages within competency, and averages within scaling type were examined. Results: Inter-rater reliability averages were higher for all competencies that used criterion-referenced scaling relative to those that used norm-referenced scaling. Aggregate scores of all independent categories (competencies and the items assessing overall competence) for criterion-referenced scaling demonstrated higher reliability (z=1.37, CI 1.26-1.48) than norm-referenced scaling (z=0.88, CI 0.77-0.99). Moreover, examination of the distributions of composite scores (average of all competencies and raters for each individual being rated) suggested that the criterion-referenced evaluations better represented the performance continuum. Conclusion: Criterion-referenced evaluation approaches appear to provide superior inter-rater reliability relative to norm-referenced evaluation scaling approaches. Although more research is needed to identify resident evaluation best practices, using criterion-referenced scaling may provide more valid data than norm-referenced scaling. ¿ 2023 by the author(s)
