4 th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ORGANIC AGRICULTURE IN MEDITERRANEAN CLIMATES: THREATS AND SOLUTIONS
Because of the pandemic Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, 4th IFOAM AgriBioMediterraneo (IFOAM
ABM) Conference on Organic Agriculture and 11th Ecology İzmir Fair activities were postponed in
2020 to a later date. After 2 years, the Ecology fair organized on 26-29 May 2022 in Gaziemir İzmir
Türkiye. The 4
th International Conference on Organic Agriculture in Mediterranean Climates:
Threats and Solutions organized together with Ecological Agricultural Organization Association
(ETO), IFOAM AgriBioMediterraneo (IFOAM ABM), International Society of Organic Farming
Research (ISOFAR), Ege University Agriculture Faculty, the Aegean Exporters' Associations, İzmir
Fair Services Culture and Art Works Trade. Inc. (IZFAŞ) and Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of
Bari (CIHEAM Bari). The Conference was a three-day meeting consisting of oral and poster
presentations and panel discussions. The Conference was organized at the İzmir Fair (Gaziemir)
Conference Hall, which also hosts two fairs as Ekoloji for organic products and services, OLIVTECH
Olive, Olive Oil, Dairy Products, Wine & Technologies Fair during the same period. This created an
opportunity to visit stands and meet the exhibitors.
The 4
th International Conference on Organic Agriculture in Mediterranean Climates: Threats and
Solutions aimed to bring together academia and practice in the Mediterranean as well as in regions
where Mediterranean climate prevails. The participants could be able to discuss different facets of the
threats of today and future posed on organic agriculture and deliver applicable solutions during the
conferance. The climate change issue was a major threat with high probability and high impact on land,
water biodiversity and human resources, which in turn affects the system designs, production patterns,
pest, disease, and weed prevalence, human resources, and the marketing channels of organic goods
and services. The Mediterranean Sea is already a tragic symbol of migration. Migration whether
domestic from rural towards urban or to other countries, or from one continent to the other will be
triggered with the climate change and others as economic or political instability. Aging of the population
especially in rural requires innovative solutions not only in agriculture but also in related fields. Organic
agriculture with basic principles that favor health of the soil, plant, animal, human and planet as
indivisible can bring solutions for agroecosystem management to overcome challenges of climate
change and deliver healthy and nutritious produce. Services brought by can be better preserved,
managed and/or diversified. The Mediterranean diversity embeds healthy diets, culture, and tourism as
regional values. Sharing research results, experiences and best practices could contribute to identify
the problems and threats, to discuss sustainability point of view, to derive applicable solutions and to
establish cooperation for future networking. This very rich and diverse programme was only possible
thanks to a strong engagement of the organizing committee (Alexis Giannarakis, Alev Kır, Barbaros

Aksoy, Süreyya Elif (Dogus Author)Buket Uzuner'in İstanbullular (2007) ve Halit Ziya Uşakiıgil'in Aık-ı Memnu (1900) romanlarında baba-kız ilişkileri dikkat çekicidir. İstanbullular'da Belgin, Ajk-ı Memnu'da Nihal, benliklerinin oluşumunda büyük ölçüde babalarına bağlı, babalarından erken yaşta uzaklaşmak zorunda kaldıkları halde onlardan gerçek anlamda hiçbir zaman kopamamış, hep "babasının kızı" olarak kalmış karakterlerdir. İki karakterin babalarıyla ilişkileri ortak bir zemin üzerinde gelişir. ..
The Carlitz rank of permutations of finite fields: a survey
L. Carlitz proved that any permutation polynomial f of a finite field Fq is a composition of linear polynomials and the monomials xq−2. This result motivated the study of Carlitz rank of f, which is defined in 2009 to be the minimum number of inversions xq−2, needed to obtain f, by E. Aksoy et al. We give a survey of results obtained so far on natural questions related to this concept and indicate a variety of applications, which emerged recently
SPACES AND PLACES OF MODERNITY AND THE MODERN ARTIST IN OĞUZ ATAY’S “RAILROAD STORYTELLERS - A DREAM”
This paper examines Atay’s “Railroad Storytellers - A Dream” in terms of Atay’s modernist experimentation in his depiction of space and spatiality, emphasising his contribution to Turkish literature as a pioneer modernist author. Oğuz Atay’s distinctive and innovative style, which forms his affinities with the early Western modernists such as James Joyce and Virginia Woolf, establishes his significant place as a pioneer modernist author in Turkish literature in the 1970s. The concept of ‘house/ home’ by Gaston Bachelard in The Poetics of Space (1957, 2014) is instrumental for me as it pertains to the predicament of three storytellers as artists in the nameless and remote railroad station. The narrator of the story and his fellow storytellers gradually sink into disconnection, confusion, misery and poverty in an environment that represents the cold and unwelcoming face of technological modernisation symbolised by the space of the train station. The narrator’s quest for finding a ‘home’ to connect him to his readers and where he could exist as an artist comes to life in his attempt to write a letter to his readers, telling them he is still ‘here’ and asking them where they are. No matter how blighted that effort is since the narrator has no address to send the letters to, the endings for Atay’s story imply a need for connection with his readers expressed in the impossible meeting of the ‘here’ with the ‘where’ in spite or because of the estrangement and alienation of the artist/author in the modern world. Hence, the possibility of space as a ‘home’ for the author/narrator dwindles in the not forthcoming answer to the letter that will never reach its destination. Copyright © 2024 N. Berrin Aksoy

Protection and industrial structure in India
Effective protection rates in India are so high and vary so greatly that anything short of low uniform tariffs and the complete elimination of quantitative restrictions would not make the industrial incentive scheme transparent, as it needs to be. The authors produce evidence to show that there is ample scope for reducing tariffs and quantitative restrictions and that most industries could coexist with much less protection than they now have. By eliminating all surcharges on inputs (tariffs on imported inputs, price differentials on local inputs, nondeductible excise taxes) - even without correcting for the effects of high investment costs - most projects (including import substitution projects) would earn from current international prices a positive profit margin on their marginal as well as full production costs. The proportion of projects with a positive profit margin would triple, from 20 to 63 percent. Among import-substituting projects that are not candidates for export under the present trade regime, under the proposed new regime half would be candidates for export if they would procure their inputs at international prices. Lower tariffs would fulfill their primary purpose more effectively: providing protection and incentive signals. The function of generating public revenues, another critical issue in India, should be fulfilled not through tariffs but through more efficient and protection-neutral instruments - in particular direct taxation (income tax) and nontariff indirect taxation (neutral excise taxes, MODVAT, and preferably the value-added tax on consumption).Environmental Economics&Policies,Economic Theory&Research,Access to Markets,Markets and Market Access,Consumption
A Comparative Study on Nadine Gordimer's 'none To Accompany Me' and Its Turkish Translation in Terms of Postcolonial Themes and Language
The aim of this study is to examine the translation of Turkish version of Nadine Gordimer's first novel None to Acoompany Me written after receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature within the framework of style, language and theme. The reason why Nadine Gordimer was preferred in this study is to examine a South African woman author other than many important authors in the postcolonial period such as V. S. Naipaul, Chinua Achebe and Salman Rushdie. As None to Accompany Me has specific cultural elements, linguistic structures and postcolonial themes that are intrinsic to the postcolonial period, it is conceded to benefit from two translational approaches and one translation method during the analysis of translator's translation strategy. Paul Bandia's tripartite or three-tier translation approach will be used as the main method and Lawrence Venuti's foreignization and domestication approach and Vinay and Darbalnet's translation procedures will be considered as supporting methods during the qualitative comparison of two books. The first translation step of Bandia's approach will be analyzed within the framework of Vinay and Darbalnet's methods and the second and third steps of translation process will be assessed in terms of Lawrence Venuti's foreignization and domestication approach. In general, the aim of this study is to examine the transfer of indigenous style and thematic features that are specific to the postcolonial texts to the target culture and language that is unfamiliar to postcolonial spirit
Investigation of Wolbachia spp. and Spiroplasma spp. in Phlebotomus species by molecular methods
The aim of this study was to determine the presence of Wolbachia spp. and Spiroplasma spp. in natural populations of sand flies in Turkey by molecular methods. A total of 40 Phlebotomus specimens (19 female and 21 male) were used in this study. Genomic DNA from whole sand flies was isolated and Wolbachia spp. infection prevalence was investigated by using Wolbachia gene specific primer sets (wsp and GroEL). In addition, the DNA were analyzed for the presence of Spiroplasma infections utilizing bacterium specific 16 S rDNA PCR-amplification primers. Results of this analysis showed a Wolbachia infection prevalence of 70% (28/40). There was no sex-bias in infection prevalence, being 76% (16/21) and 63% (12/19) in males and females, respectively. Analysis of Spiroplasma infections indicated that 26% (5/19) of female sand flies were positive for infection, while none of the screened males (0/21) were positive. Of the 40 sand fly samples, only 2 were found to be positive for both Wolbachia spp. and Spiroplasma spp. The present study demonstrates the presence of Wolbachia and Spiroplasma infections in the natural sand fly populations in Turkey. This is the first report on Spiroplasma infection in the sand flies from Turkey. © 2018 The Author(s).This study was supported by TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey) (TUBITAK, BIDEB-2219).
