Promoting Financial Literacy among the Elderly: Consequences on Confidence
Financial literacy is a crucial skill for personal wealth management and economic well-being. Hence, it is important to evaluate the impact of interventions aimed at increasing financial knowledge and confidence in the most vulnerable groups of the society. We conduct an impact evaluation of a two-hour lecture targeting the elderly population. We find that the intervention does not have a significant impact on knowledge but has a significant effect on confidence and (partly) on overconfidence
Our dreams, our selves: automatic analysis of dream reports
Sleep scientists have shown that dreaming helps people improve their waking lives, and they have done so by developing sophisticated content analysis scales. Dream analysis entails time-consuming manual annotation of text. That is why dream reports have been recently mined with algorithms, and these algorithms focused on identifying emotions. In so doing, researchers have not tackled two main technical challenges though: (i) how to mine aspects of dream reports that research has found important, such as characters and interactions; and (ii) how to do so in a principled way grounded in the literature. To tackle these challenges, we designed a tool that automatically scores dream reports by operationalizing the widely used dream analysis scale by Hall and Van de Castle. We validated the tool's effectiveness on hand-annotated dream reports (the average error is 0.24), scored 24 000 reports-far more than any previous study- A nd tested what sleep scientists call the 'continuity hypothesis' at this unprecedented scale: We found supporting evidence that dreams are a continuation of what happens in everyday life. Our results suggest that it is possible to quantify important aspects of dreams, making it possible to build technologies that bridge the current gap between real life and dreaming
The exciting "bench to bedside" journey of cell therapies for acute kidney injury and renal transplantation
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is characterized by an increasing incidence and poor outcomes in both developed and undeveloped countries. AKI is also acquiring importance in the setting of kidney transplantation (KT): besides all the classical forms of AKI that KT patients may undergo, several transplant-specific injuries can also lead to the loss of graft function. The mechanisms of tissue damage in native and grafted kidneys share several common pathogenic elements. Since appropriate therapeutic treatments are still lacking-probably due to the disease complexity-clinicians are forced to provide only supportive care. In this composite scenario, cell therapies represent an evolving frontier for AKI treatment in native and transplanted kidneys: ex-vivo manipulated stem or immune cells are able to counteract renal dysfunction by a wide range of biological mechanisms. In this review, we will discuss the potential applications of cell therapies in AKI and KT by analyzing the available clinical data and the most promising experimental prospects from a "bench to bedside" perspective
Le economie insulari e l’interscambio commerciale tra Maiorca, Sardegna e Sicilia nel XVI secolo
In the sixteenth century, the shift of the economic centre to the Atlantic area and the new configuration of trade routes led to the gradual decline in the volume of international trading in the Mediterranean context, although the regional exchanges continued with a certain degree of activity. In the article, after examining the main critical issues of island economies, the author aims to outline the economic structure and specialisation on the most important islands in the western Mediterranean. On the basis of the results achieved by comparing multiple sets of unpublished data from maritime insurance contracts found in Majorcan archives, he also proceeds to deepen the knowledge of the economic relations and trade agreements concerning Majorca, Sicily and Sardinia.

Rationale of mesenchymal stem cell therapy in kidney injury
Numerous preclinical and clinical studies suggest that mesenchymal stem cells, also known as multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), may improve pathologic conditions involving different organs. These beneficial effects initially were ascribed to the differentiation of MSCs into organ parenchymal cells. However, at least in the kidney, this is a very rare event and the kidney-protective effects of MSCs have been attributed mainly to paracrine mechanisms. MSCs release a number of trophic, anti-inflammatory, and immune-modulatory factors that may limit kidney injury and favor recovery. In this article, we provide an overview of the biologic activities of MSCs that may be relevant for the treatment of kidney injury in the context of a case vignette concerning a patient at high immunologic risk who underwent a second kidney transplantation followed by the development of ischemia-reperfusion injury and acute allograft rejection. We discuss the possible beneficial effect of MSC treatment in the light of preclinical and clinical data supporting the regenerative and immunomodulatory potential of MSCs
Under Pressure: Unveiling the Instincts Behind (Dis)Honesty
This in-depth Research Handbook integrates insights from different disciplines to analyse the mechanisms underlying unethical behavior, presenting a compelling picture of unethical behavior as a complex, context-dependent phenomenon. Alessandro Bucciol and Simone Quercia bring together leading researchers from economics, psychology and neuroscience to explore unethical behavior’s uniquely multifaceted nature
