ICT for logistics and freight transportation: A literature review and research agenda
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to classify research on information and communication technology (ICT) for logistics and freight transportation on the basis of the main themes and methods and proposes directions for future research.Design/methodology/approachThe review is based on 44 papers published from 1994 to 2009 in international peer‐reviewed journals. The academic papers are analysed and classified according to the research methodology adopted and the themes addressed.FindingsWhile there are many contributions taking the “public transportation” perspective (i.e. the viewpoint of public stakeholders), papers focussing on the “private transportation” perspective (i.e. the viewpoint of the private companies offering logistics and transportation services) are fewer and relatively more recent. Additionally, even though in recent years researchers have also started to examine the decision‐making process of ICT adoption, many themes are under‐represented in literature, such as the subject of integration among different application types, empirical research on ICT adoption and the role of technology providers in the adoption process. As far as the methodology is concerned, the review revealed that many of the papers examined are either conceptual papers or empirical studies (i.e. mostly based on surveys, or else on case studies or interviews), while simulation and modelling are rarely present.Research limitations/implicationsWhile efforts were made to be all‐inclusive, significant research efforts may have been inadvertently omitted. However, the authors believe that this review is an accurate representation of the body of research on ICT for logistics and transportation companies published during the specified timeframe, and feel that confidence may be placed on the resulting assessments.Originality/valueThe paper offers a guide for the review of previous research on this topic and identifies the most important issues that need to be addressed in future research.</jats:sec
A call to action: a stakeholder analysis of green logistics practices
Purpose – There is a growing body of literature discussing the green logistics practices (GLPs) that companies could introduce to reduce the logistics environmental impact. Current approaches also identify several influencing factors within firms that could serve as barriers to, or enablers of, GLPs. However, less is known about the role of extra-firm stakeholders, even though these are crucial to operationalizing green logistics effectively. This study merges current theoretical understanding with empirical evidence to provide a detailed stakeholder analysis of GLPs.
Design/methodology/approach – Using stakeholder theory as a theoretical lens, we aimed at offering a mid-range contribution by conducting multiple embedded case studies examining Italian logistics service providers and shippers. GLPs and the related influencing factors were examined as sub-units of analysis within broader companies’ environmental sustainability strategies.
Findings – We identified cascading effects among factors influencing the adoption of GLPs (e.g., key economic factors are affected by external factors which also influence organizational and collaboration factors). These effects are moderated by interdependencies between primary and secondary stakeholders, and the study highlights the prominent involvement of secondary stakeholders, such as final consumers.
Originality/value – Our paper contributes to better understanding how and why companies adopt GLPs, emphasizing the wide set of stakeholders involved and illustrating how different stakeholders impact on GLPs adoption by affecting a set of influencing factors. By combining insights from the available literature with contemporary empirical data, we emphasize how Logistics Service Providers and shippers can no longer address the adoption of GLPs as “focal companies”, but only as part of a “focal network of interconnected stakeholders”, all of them influencing GLPs adoption
B2b eMarketplaces: A classification framework to analyse business models and critical success factors
Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to look in depth at the role of business-to-business (B2b)
eMarketplaces in supporting B2b relationships, identifying the successful business models and the
related critical success factors (CSFs), and to propose a new classification framework to classify
eMarketplace business models.
Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on the analysis of 30 international
eMarketplaces through case study methodology.
Findings – Nine different business models are identified, which can be classified in terms of a
service-provisioning model and supported processes between companies. For each business model,
different CSFs are highlighted.
Research limitations/implications – The study has been conducted on a sample of 30 significant
international eMarketplaces. Future studies could apply the framework to other cases in specific
industries.
Originality/value – The paper offers an overview of the eMarketplace business models linking them
with the most relevant CSFs. On one hand, the identified CSFs must be considered by managers and
entrepreneurs launching new eMarketplaces or managing existing ones, in order to define the strategy,
the business model, and the value proposition for the company users. On the other hand, managers
facing the problem of adopting internet technology to support a B2b relationship with business
partners must learn to distinguish between the different B2b business models, in order to understand
their impact on processes and more precisely evaluate the potential value offered by a B2b electronic
intermediary
An Exploratory study of ICT Adoption in the Italian Freight Transportation Industry
Purpose – Companies in the freight transportation industry can currently make use of an increasing number of applications based on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to improve the performance of their processes. Although these applications have become more widely used in recent years, there is still little research focussing on the actual adoption rate. The present study aims to fill this gap and provide a broad empirical analysis of the use of ICT-based applications in the freight transportation industry in Italy.
Design/methodology/approach – The analysis uses multiple-case studies. It is based on semi-structured interviews with the management of leading Italian companies involved in transportation processes.
Findings – The study provides an insight into the current adoption of ICT applications among companies involved in freight transportation activities in Italy. The results point out the most used functions in each application area and the level of integration across these application areas.
Research limitations/implications – The sample of companies examined in this study was selected by expert assessment, and is biased towards companies willing to provide data and share results. However, the findings provide some interesting results on how and where investments in ICT can be suitable for companies in the logistics and transportation industry.
Originality/value – The paper fulfils an identified need for in-depth case studies focussing on the adoption level and the implementation process of ICT applications in transportation, and it is of interest to researchers and practitioners in the field of logistics and transportation management
Noncommutative Cauchy integral formula
The aim of this paper is to provide and prove the most general Cauchy integral formula for slice regular functions and for continuously differentiable functions on a real alternative *-algebra. Slice regular functions represent a generalization of the classical concept of holomorphic function of a complex variable in the noncommutative and nonassociative settings. As an application, we obtain two kinds of local series expansion for slice regular functions
